1) The United States Government still has $50 billion sunk in GM equity; and,
2) GM paid back the loan with TARP funds -- not profits.
If Goldman-Sachs is on the hot seat for pushing a bad investment, why not GM? After all, if anyone invested in GM based on the commercial or the editorial, thinking GM was, in fact, "paid up," that would constitute fraud by many standards.

Is Whitacre pushing people to invest in GM?
Ain't nothing gonna happen to GS (their New York lawyers will fix it all up).

No, that would be if they borrowed more govt. money to pay back the original loan...they didn't...besides, give me all the GM stock I can buy when it does get offered...

That's right, TARP is a handout. But, he implies GM is healthy and nothing could be further from the truth.

They are healthy enough not to need stimulus money, that's good enough for me, but they also dumped billions in loans and obligations, with the new stylish vehicles lines, the outstanding new powertrain warranty, their liberal return policy, and Toyota circling the drain, like I said, give me all the GM stock I can buy...

I would love to buy Ford too, but they are still selling overpriced cars because of legacy costs, and I still question their use of appropriate materials in construction of their cars, something they have been notoriously bad at, vs GM.

Congress doesn't investigate themselves on a wholesale basis. Just don't vote for incumbents. That's all we can do, and hope for the best.

:lol You are such a brain dead liberal sheep.
They took money from the $50 billion federal loan (ie taxpayers) to pay another $5 billion federal loan (ie, taxpayers).
They essentially paid a portion of their Visa bill with the same Visa card, and you want to stroke them off for it.
Dumbass.

Exactly.
It's a fricken ad people... they're trying to fix their image with an up-beat Domino's pizza-style ad because people don't want to buy cars from companies on the dole who've been making shitty products for decades. They're going for a blank slate.
That said, it says heaps about them as a company that they tried to be slick about something so easily checkable.

Some of GM's new product lines are pretty good.
The 2010 Camaro series...
The 2010 Buick Lacrosse...
The New Cadillac series...
even the new Malibu has a certain appeal...

The new 100k power-train warranty, and drive for 30-day policy is a no brainer. GM is a winner.
General Motors chairman Ed Whitacre made news last week with a series of national television advertising spots in which he claimed the company has repaid its government bailout loans in full, ahead of schedule and with interest.
Unfortunately, according to Neil Barofsky, the Inspector-General for the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) under which the federal loans were made to GM, the repayments cited by Whitacre were simply made with other tax dollars made available to the automaker in its bailout deal with the government.
So in effect GM was repaying one government loan with another government loan.
so they paid the original loan amount off.. do you have a problem with half truth advertisements now?

Well, as the second article suggests, it would depend on whose behest the claim is being made.
And, yes, half-truth advertisements -- by the government -- are troubling. Lest you forget, you and I -- in the form of the federal government -- are majority stockholders in GM.

Of course, there is an American car company that didn't take a dime of TARP and is pretty healthy, considering the state of the economy...
