Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
I would not at all be against Phil Jackson coming to the Spurs.
Phil is waiting and hasn't made a decision yet, but I guarantee you that if the Spurs approached him, he'd take the Spurs Headcoaching position before the Lakers or Knicks.
Spurs are in great shape capwise and I think Phil Jackson is a better "Playoff" coach.
Phil Jackson is also a better motivator, something that the Spurs lack.
I agree as well...if the Spurs lose this series Pop should go back to Management.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
The big thing about Phil Jackson is he just worried about defense, and let Tex coach the offense.
Pop could learn something there.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
When you referenced Flip Saunders...I knew you were temporarily fucked in the head.
Pop didn't tell Tony to fucking start the game playing 1 on 5. He didn't tell his PG's to let Luke and AD rape all opposing defenders with some floaters and curl jump shots.
FOR THE LAST FUCKING TIME. IT WASN'T THE O. IT WAS THE D.
Didn't you hear Pop say, that if we don't play any defense...we don't win.

Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
As a Spur fan, we think that all reams should lay down and die! But hey, I got news for you all, the Sonics want to win also! They're just having a good game and the Spurs are just having a rough time. With the talent the Spurs have, they'll come out Tuesday night fired up and win. Now, if Pop doesn't find an adjustment to what the Sonics are doing, then there is a huge problem. If the series goes 7 games, so be it. As long as the Spurs are on top. Maybe this will be a valueable lesson for them.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
I guess Pop answered my question during the postgame inverview. He didn't think anyone else was helping TD so I guess that is why he took him out.
We didn't deserve to win tonight. But I still think we win this series.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
I must say Pop got his ankles broke and got shitted on by:
Allen
Riddonour
Daniels
some other people.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
I was just pulling people's chains on Flip, but he certainly knows more about offense than Pop ever will.
He'd make a great assistant. Let him run the offense, Pop the D.

Sonics played without Rashard Lewis, an All-Star and their 2nd leading scorer.
They are without Rad as well.
Not many excuses you can have if you're Popovich, a coach who has a 2 time MVP, an all-star guard, and TP as well as depth at the center position.
The blame used to be that the Lakers had Shaq & Kobe and that was the reason why we lost.
Sorry Pop, you have no excuses. It's championship or you're outta here!!!

Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
flip saunders?? yeah he had fantastic offense in those year after year playoff stiffs.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
Yeah, what has Pop done?
In '99 Jaren Jackson and Elliott both went crazy from three. In '03 it was Kerr and Buckets.
Screw the Texas Lotto, who needs it when the success of our offense is predicated on TWO guys shooting 45% or better from three for the entire playoffs...

There in this response lies the key phrase, "Tony to fucking start the game playing 1 on 5." for all you TP lovers, he will never truly be an elite pg until he makes people around him better. And he doesn't.
And I agree, Defense was a big problem tonight. Look at howmany people where in doubel digits...Damien wilkens for crying out loud?!

Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
Some of you talking about the D: the defense looks worse when you're not scoring at all on the other end.

The Spurs should be able to score 80ts, and beat the Sonics...But you tellme that they can't handle Luke Ridenour and Damien Wilkins? ya, its the D.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
Guys like Ridnour and Wilkins go off because our shitty offense is letting them gain confidence at the other end.
Then you add Pop subbing in everyone and their mom and coming up with whacky rotations...
Put it all together and it breeds confidence and momentum, and marginal players get in the flow.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
The Spurs are built around their defense. They couldn't get a stop tonight at all. The Sonics were able to penetrate almost at will and get off their shot before the shotblockers could rotate or kick out to a shooter or else they were shooting over the top on screen rolls when the defender was going under. Pop needs to call up Hank and figure out how to defend this.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
Blaming the Sonics' offensive performance on the Spurs' offensive execution is a bit of a stretch, to say the least.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
For everyone who says that Pop needs to be fired if we loose this series. YOU DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BASKETBALL!!! You don't fire a coach that's lead his team to two titles and multiple years of success.
WE have great plays and good players. This game was a horrible game for the Spurs. Duncan was the only player playing up to his abilities. Parker and Manu were horrible tonight. Barry was nothing like always. Bowen has never been this much of a offensive liability and our bench was tragic. Horry had some good offensive rebounds but that's it.
I don't know what's wrong, but it aint Pop.
-

"I was just pulling people's chains on Flip, but he certainly knows more about offense than Pop ever will.

Pop is waay too proud to allow that. It would go something like this:
Front office: "OK Pop, we want to bring in Flip saunders to assist you with the offense. Don't worry, he won't take over as coach, but we just feel that you need a bit of help in that area"
Pop: "Over my ******* dead body!! I don't need no stinking offensive coordinator. I can handle my job myself, thank you very much. Sorry to "flip out, but I won't take that!1
yes..

Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
Offensive playoff ineptitude in 5 of 7 years. The only constants: Tim and Pop.
Who's to blame, Gummi?
Should we fire Tim?
When will it be enough for you? When Tim retires with two rings, will you still say it wasn't Pop's fault?
You're right. You don't fire a coach when he's led you to two rings. You fire him when he's losing to punk ass teams missing two of their best three players when you're the favorite to win the title.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
I know Pop's got too much of an ego for that. Magnano would be a no brainer (Argentina's national team coach) to come in as offensive asst., but Pop would never be able to admit his "system" sucked in any way, shape, or form.
That's why it'd probably come down to firing him, because he'll never admit he fucked up. He'll just make some trades, not re-sign some guys, and the San Antonio media will write some PR pieces about it, and we'll come back and watch it happen again next year.
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
How in the world can you say that Pop's system sucks? Look at his record man, over 70% winning. If you call that "his system sucks", you're stupid. The Spurs can't always win, sometimes it's because of bad shooting, sometimes it's turnovers, very seldom is it Pop's fault. When you have a team that doesn't show up for a Game 4 in the West semis. Is that bad coaching or our players just plain and simple sucked? When a team commits 15 turnovers after 24 minutes of action. Is that bad coaching?
When the Spurs loose, it's always Pop's fault and his "horrible system". When we win it's always our great players. Stop putting a blame on someone that has proven time and time again that he's a great coach and start looking at individual players that sucked. Sure Pop makes strange subs sometimes, but if he's that bad of a coach why has he accomplished so much?
This game was a lack off everything. Stop trying to find a scapegoat everytime the Spurs loose. It's a team sport and coaches never loose games, players do.

Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
FUCK RECORDS. God damn, that is so fucking retarded. Pro sports aren't about percentages.
They're about World Fucking Championships. What does a great regular season winning percentage get you? Outside of home court, not a fucking thing.
What does winning the post-season get you? A trophy and a title. This isn't fucking little league, you don't get blue ribbons for the regular season.
Yeah, it's never Pop's fault. Good fucking call.
Quote:

The reality is the blame lies with both. But Pop is the coach and President of basketball operations. Where should the buck stop in that case? The water boy?
Pop coaches this team. He built this team. They are his players, his system. Failure means that changes need to be made.
It's time to quit recycling the perimeter players when the result remains the same.
Pop needs someone who can design an effective playoff offense. And from what I know of Pop his ego would never let that happen.
I don't know about you, but personally I'd like to see us do a little more with the Tim Duncan era than two measley rings.
And apparently, for some of you dense folks, it's going to take Tim retiring with two rings to get a fucking clue.

Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
the Emperor (errr Pop) can never be fired AHF, don't you know that?
-
Re: If we blow this series Pop should be fired
Yes I know Pooh. That's the shitty part. Peter Holt doesn't know enough about basketball to realize what needs to happen, either.
At least it'll be a fun summer, we can speculate about who will be the next goat after we trade away Barry.
