Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
Well I went to University of Pittsburgh before I transferred last year and I played pickup basketball with Dejuan Blair maybe 15-25 times. During these times, Blair would shoot a plethora of jumpers each time. The funny thing is, he can make them. He was streaky though. Some games he would look like Brandon Roy, hitting 8-10 in a row with pressure in his grill, and sometimes he would go 1-9. Now I know its been 2 years since that time, but Blair has the "ability" to develop a consistent jumper. One negative is that his release was kind of awkward, but I think the Spurs can fix that. All in all, I wanted to give some input after playing with him many times up close. If you guys have any other questions about his game you don't know, I can try to answer as many as I can

How was his rebounding?

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
If he develops this he improves tremendously as a captain of the bench.
However, he might fall in love with his jump shot and forget his roots. The path to the Dark Side, this is.

Dont know that will happen. I was talking to him after one game and I said "That jumper going to come out again this season?" And he said "Hell no, owning the glass is what I do"

Yeah its a really weird shot. It takes an hour to get off, but it goes in even with pressure in his face. He has the ability to make it part of arsenal though.

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
I think some of us underestimate how good the competition at the NBA level is. It's one thing hitting a bunch of jumpers in pick-up with a bunch of other pick-up players. Totally different running up and down the court at full speed and then being tightly defended and jumpers extremely contested by 6'5 to 7'0 world class athletes. I think some of the worst "shooters" in the NBA probably could look like Ray Allen in a pick-up game with average joes who aren't exactly playing all NBA defense.
My senior year at Michigan, one of my friends from the dorms made it as a walk-on on the basketball team. Short Greek kid who played high school ball and was a good baller. Lol I remember that spring after basketball was done, he'd come to the gym a couple times and shoot 30 footers in pick-up games, make them all. No rim. It was like nothing. He was in business school too. Not like he was a full-time, make his career professional basketball or anything like that.
I really think even some of the bad jump shooters in the NBA would be lights out shooters in pick-up or just shooting around the gym.

Yeah obviously its nothing compared to game speed. I am just saying it looked decent for him not shooting any jumpers in games at Pitt. One would think Blair has some goofy ass shot, but its not bad at all.
Its a given that Tony Parker and Rajon Rondo would absolutely annihilate anyone from 3 pointers in pickup.

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
When Blair was schooling Thabeet, he was hitting some nice midrange jumpers and they were high arching shots. I don't know if he can make those consistently.

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
Last season, according to 82 games, 75% of Blair's shot selection were inside shots and only 25% were jumps shots. His eFG% for those jump shots was a low .352. It will be interesting to see if these stats change during his sophomore year.

Maybe. He has some fluidity to him and lateral quickness, but its barely there. He could play 6-8 mpg, but not more at the 3. But it was when he was chunky and not lean like he is now. So maybe that has changed.

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
A lot of you may not like this opinion, but if Blair becomes too reliant on a mid-range jump shot, it will take away a lot of his strengths away such as offensive rebounding because he would be "spacing the floor" and thus be further away from th ebasket, resulting in reduced offensive rebounding.

We're not talking about him solely becoming a jump shooter, we're just saying that maybe he can develop something reliable to use in emergency situations.

Re: Dejuan Blair's Jumpshot.
I'd prefer he make a big step in his team defense. Don't give a shit if he ever shoots a jumper. He's good at being in the paint and not getting in the way. That makes him the perfect guy to have next to Duncan or Splitter. The Spurs should want Blair to get the vast majority of his points without having to run plays for him. That means the only time they should be passing him the ball is when his defender leaves him to cover the other big.
