We do just fine. We don't need to start bringing in Gooden or Thomas type players. We can rebound ok, but I've not see us actually crash the offensive glass unless Blair is on the floor. We have a 7 footer sitting on the fucking bench that we've been drooling over for the past 3 years. Why bring in another non playing big man?
If Sheed wants to play and can get his fat ass in shape by March he would be a good pickup for a playoff run because that the only time he plays.
Sheed has stated he's done. He couldn't wait to get out. With his bank roll, he won't be worrying about much, might not even watch the game.
Not just sheed but anybody! I don't know who's all out there so pitch in names if you like!
Robert Horry
Well, we have a big. He's just not playing.
where the hell is robert horry?
There is no one that Pop will bring in that he will let start over Blair. The only way you get a new starter is to trade Blair. Blair's salary is so low that you cannot get equal return.
Having said that it is kind of sad that we have a need for a rebounder when that is the one thing Blair is suppose to do well. If he would just focus on this one area we would be fine. Instead, he takes to many ill advised shots, he gets blocked too often, and he takes too many plays off. When he plays hard and with intensity, and shows some patience on the offensive end then our starting five is as good as it gets.
Crashing the O glass is the opposite of the Spurs formula. At LEAST three players start back on release of the shot to play the break. One, or at most two players go for the board. This prevents a lot of run out easy baskets by our opponents, and we shoot well enough and efficient enough that it doesn't hurt our offensive production.
I still think we could use a big. Interior D and roations have been lacking for a long time. Spurs have problems with teams with quality bigs, but As I look at the NBA in general, I noticed there really are only a few teams with quality bigs at all. Lets go over the teams who could cause problems in the west.
LA- Bynum and gasol. Last time they met, chemistry was an issue and they didnt even try to use their size. Only real team that could use size advantage versus spurs.
DALLAS- DIRK AND Chandler. I didnt see their size effect anything the spurs did at all. IMO, the bigs wont be the diffence. Size shouldnt matter to much here
Utah- Al Jefferson and booze(milsap)r- Just not enoughtalent to dominate the Spurs frontline.
Not really any bigs in West to worry about with bigs correct?
I know were not worried about Kevlin love or Blake Griffin.
Considering these things, I dont think we need worry about another quality big. LEt Tiago develop and utilize dice in the play off and we should be fine.
In the EAST, Boston and NY and Orlando only front lines to wsorry about, but I dont think any can completly dominate us....hopefully.
The other big slot is really a matter of who shows up. All if them except Splitter has played one game or another where they played dominate ball when they provide the effort. Splitter has not shown because he simply has not be given the NBA minutes to develp his game. I remember how everyone slammed Oberto the first year too.
Splitter is the one guy who tries to play hard whenever he is out there. I really think giving Splitter a few minutes at the start of the game would help our defensive flow and reestablish the hunger for Blair as a bench player. Then flow Dice and Bonner in depending on matchups.
Spurs need to get a handle on the bigs that have been shooting high% outside of the paint. That is what is hurting the Spurs lately. Stoudemire, Davis, Hansbrough all were going ape shit with their 15 footers.
In most cases, Pop is probably content with letting them shoot those jumpers.
The Spurs defense is designed to chase guys off the perimeter, funnel them into help defense, and keep them out of the paint. It baits them into taking long twos, which are the most inefficient shot in basketball.
If post players like Stoudemire and Davis want to step out and take jumpers all night, then the defense has done its job. More often than not, those guys aren't going to beat you from midrange.
Now, I agree there needs to be some sort of adjustment made if those guys start going bonkers (or against guys like Dirk, whose midrange jumper is right in their wheelhouse). You can't just keep giving them open shots, but stepping out to defend is going to open the paint and break down the rest of the defense.
I think Boston, and especially Orlando will give us fits.
In Vegas.

The commercial slogan says that what goes on in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas.
Former Spur Robert Horry might want to keep some of his post-basketball plans out of the newspaper while visiting Glitter Gulch.
Horry’s name popped up in the gossip column of Norm Clarke of the Las Vegas Review-Journal today after he was seen at a packed nightclub partying with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
Clark also reports that celebrities like rappers like 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Jeremih and Tony Yayo, boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Darrius Heyward-Bey of the Oakland Raiders were among those spottled at Marquee (Cosmopolitan) Friday night. Other sports celebrities at the club included Marion Barber and Andre Gurode of the Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers Patrick Crayton and Darren Sproles.
I don’t know what Horry would be talking to Cuban about. Maybe something about the I-35 Rivalry or the way he historically tormented Phoenix guard and former Dallas player Steve Nash.
I know what he said, but I think the Spurs would be best served by continuing to develop Splitter. Duncan and McDyess will get more PT toward and during the playoffs, Blair can still potentially improve and Bonner is a good enough situational big to contribute. Splitter becoming a solid post rotation player is the key to the issue.
Hill is the answer to two big issues the Spurs are experiencing. On offense, he is a enough of a perimeter threat that his defender can't afford to sag off too much to double team and he can put the ball on the floor and pull up a jumper or finish at the rim. He is also a damn good passer. On defense, he is long and quick enough to defend similar perimeter players that give the Spurs trouble putting less pressure on the post defenders to have to constantly rotate and cover.
From a team defense standpoint, a player like Grant Hill is more valuable than another big who will hinder the development of Splitter.
I agree. I think if we coulf pull off one of those Barry-Thomas type trades, send Dice and number one for G. Hill and then resign Dice later after he gets cut then I would go for it.
Having said that I think the Suns would rather chew glass than do something that might help the Spurs.
Quality or even serviceable bigs are in short supply. Spurs don't make mid-season trades, so it seems to many that the best bet would be to develop Splitter for serviceable, limited minutes at least.
And we know how that story is playing out.
Ibaka is going nowhere. Are you retarded? Gooden's next time playing defense will be his first, and we all saw that firsthand two years ago. Been there, done that. Varejao is out for the year.
Blair's rebounding hasn't been bad. 6.5 rpg in just 20 minutes is solid. His rebounding rates are on par with last year and higher than anybody on the Laker front line - the group that this board is most worried about him matching up with.
His defense (while improving) still has some work to be done and he's still learning what offensive tactics he should take in what situations - but his rebounding has not been an issue (overall).
