Building a computer for around 800 that will run, say, Crysis at max?
Been out of the loop with computer gaming for about 15 years, but I'd like to get back into it. I've done some research, but the amount of products out there is overwhelming, so I have no idea what the best components (CPU, motherboard, video cards, sound cards) are and how much RAM those components need to be effective.
It is possible to build a computer for around 800 that will run a game like Crysis (and the upcoming sequel) on max settings?
Also, rather than build it myself (I would love to, but I'm not familiar with installing something like a liquid cooling system or overclocking a CPU) I'm going to have it built. That said, is it substantially cheaper to build it yourself than go through a company like Digital Storm?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

sup son.
Lemme brief u, first of all games programmed properly dont use alot of cpu. They use bout 15-25% except if u into RTS/TBS shit where da AI does crazy calculation.
Therefore da gpu is da most important. Cpu any quad core should be ok for now. Memory is really irellevant unless u want some crazy ns on it which imo is irrelevant 4 da discussion or gaming topic.
Another thang i presume u goin for a desktop and not laptop/notebook. Gaming/multimedia desktops bout 800$-1000$ should offer u a quadcore/4-6gigs ram/1TB hard/ dx11 gpu/etc which is bout ok 4 crysis rite now. I dunno bout max settings, depends on gpu. A 400/500 series nvidia card or ati counterpart should do.
So it depends watchu gaming for u should invest mo into
tbs/strat/tbs -> cpu n memory
action/rpg -> gpu (cpu must be a quad at least)
My advice would be 2 wait a couple of months since some new procs about 2 hit da market and this would lead to some ok price changes.
Btw:
Next crysis is gonna needs more though so 800 wont cut it.
Current crysis might be ok, but not wit mods (extra grass n shit)

Well, I was gonna ask Mr. Ross about the AMD Phenom X6 Six Core. Much cheaper than its Intel counterpart.
Anyone have any opinions on it?

The Intel architecture (Sandy Bridge flub notwithstanding) is simply a step ahead of AMD, which is still using a foundation for their processes that was created in 2003. You'll get better performance out of Intel, but price/performance is closer. You really can't lose either way.

What operating system did you throw in your rig?
I know XP is much better for gaming than Vista, and it seems to be better than 7 as indicated by these test results: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/...ming/page3.asp.
However, I'm curious to hear your thoughts.

I'm using 64 bit Windows 7.
