Some contract info on Malik:
Signed to 7-year, $42 million deal in 2002 off-season.
This concludes his third season under that contract. The opt-out comes two years from now. (Is that at player or team option??)
By that time, perhaps Malik would be looking for a comfortable place to come play another year at a low rate before retiring. So, summer 2007, there could be an realistic chance for Malik to return economically.
I'd be all for it then, just for sentimentality and locker room presence.
After all, the Spurs were willing to, over the course of a couple years, basically trade Derek Anderson, Antonio Daniels and Charles "Spider" Smith (who was making a decent impact at the time before disappearing to ... ?) for a single year's use of Steve Smith, who did little more than provide locker room presence for the 2003 championship run. (I'm leaving out Steve Kerr's involvement in those two trades, since he left then came back.)
I think Malik could be the Kerr/Smith kind of momentary impact player. Sit on the bench all season, then come in and do a Cinderella story in a pivotal playoff game.
So, Malik returns in 2007? I wouldn't bet against it yet.
