Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
http://www.nba.com/2012/news/feature...s=iref:nbahpt1
COACH OF THE YEAR
• THE WINNER: Gregg Popovich, San Antonio
RUNNER-UP: Tom Thibodeau, Chicago
THE OTHERS: Scott Brooks, Oklahoma City; Mike Brown, L.A. Lakers; Alvin Gentry, Phoenix
As irascible as ever, Popovich has never done a better job of putting a team together. He slapped a rotation together on the fly, giving Danny Green, T.J. Ford (before he retired mid-season) and rookie Kawhi Leonard minutes early in the season, then leaving them on the floor to win or lose games while Manu Ginobili missed his usual bunch of games with injuries. Popovich worked in Stephen Jackson without a hitch when the former Spur was re-acquired at the trade deadline, and he's demanded and gotten more from Tiago Splitter in the middle.
Most importantly, Popovich has not wavered in his determination to bring San Antonio to the playoffs as healthy as possible, no matter the consequence. He has Tim Duncan playing a career-low 28 minutes per game, bringing "DNP-Old" into the NBA lexicon.
The Spurs are not winning with defense anymore; it's been years since they were the shutdown unit that choked the life out of opponents' halfcourt offense. San Antonio wins now by outscoring people. The Spurs are second in the league in points per game and lead in points per possession, and Popovich presided over that transformation. Instead of complaining about his team's deteriorating D, he quickly embraced what they could do to win games.
ALL-NBA FIRST TEAM
Guards: Kobe Bryant, Lakers; Tony Parker, Spurs
Forwards: LeBron James, Heat; Kevin Durant, Thunder
Center: Dwight Howard, Magic
ALL-NBA SECOND TEAM
Guards: Chris Paul, Clippers; Dwyane Wade, Heat
Forwards: Kevin Love, Timberwolves; Carmelo Anthony, Knicks
Center: Andrew Bynum, Lakers
ALL NBA THIRD TEAM
Guards: Russell Westbrook, Thunder; Rajon Rondo, Celtics
Forwards: LaMarcus Aldridge, Portland; Dirk Nowitzki, Mavericks
Center: Marc Gasol, Memphis

Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
Congratulations, TP! Hope the honor doesn't go his head - just have the feeling that Parker plays best when he's got a chip on his shoulder. But well-deserved honor - he earned it.
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
Dirk Nowitzki over Duncan in 3rd team all NBA? Seriously? Dirk has been awful and Duncans stats are only down because his minutes are down. Per 36 his stats are not much sort of his 2003 mvp season

Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
i think it's just one ballot...

Gentry? And doesn't even mention Frank Vogel? WTF?

Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
TP vs. CP3 is pretty interesting. CP3 has had Griffin and Jordan at his disposal all season yet the Clippers were never much of a factor in the playoff race. TP kept his team afloat despite no Ginobili and a 75% Duncan. I think CP3 is the better player but I can see giving TP the nod over him based on how TP carried his team for a stretch this season.
Statistically, per-minute CP3 is better but not overwhelmingly so. TP scores more and is pretty close in assists, tbh.
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
It's just DA's vote only.
Of course, I concur
I think Kawhi makes ALL-NBA Rookie 1st team. Spurs have a long streak with that. Gary Neal made it last year.

Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
I'll challenge anybody who puts Marc Gasol, Aldridge and Anthony ahead of Tim. Even Dirk and Love are argumentative.
Also, his logic of "if you can't vote Rose into 1st team since he missed half of the season, then you can't vote him into 2nd or 3rd team" really makes me laugh. I never expect a reporter and a coach are that smart, but unable to find a logic way to do it? This shows how much credit when they talk if they can't figure out a simple form logic.
Take a pitcher for an easier example. Say a pitcher plays 18 games, and wins 15 of the, which is obviously Cy-Young Award level winning percentage. But since there are some pitchers play 30 games and win 21 games. You have to vote these pitchers ahead of the first pitcher. But it does not mean you can't/shouldn't vote the first pitcher ahead of other 14-15 wins out of 30 games pitchers.
In NBA, it's not easy to quantify what a star player does for his team like a pitcher does. But the logic follows.
I'm not saying I'm going to vote Rose into any of All NBA teams (I wouldn't), but the logic to support him deserving a 2nd/3rd team but not 1st team is so not subtle. Yet it seems unthinkable to him. And imagine he is one of the smart reporters.

Yes. The award is not who is the best athlete or the most skilled at a particular position. It is most valuable for the team. And for what TP has done this year, I think it is a great recognition.
I don't think he is going to get the award, but I think it is a great recognition that he would be considered for it and perhaps should get it.

Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
a first team for tp would be nice tbh
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
its too late for them to get on the bus, fuck his report.

Paul and Parker both could (and should?) be 1st team all-NBA.
With that said Parker will probably end 3rd team All-NBA. (Paul/Bryant 1st - Westbrook/Wade 2nd)
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
I think Parker has a good chance to make 2nd team because Westbrook's stock is falling quickly right now.
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
So weird to not see Derrick Rose listed at all.
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
Marc Gasol doesn't make much sense. Duncan plays almost 10 mpg less and has better stats, Pau is also better.

Did you read the article? He said that if he couldn't put Rose first team because he only played 30 something games, he really couldn't justify putting him on any of the three teams.

“Is it time to start the chant?” he said after Monday’s 124-89 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers at the AT&T Center that clinched the top spot in the West. “‘Coach of the Year, Coach of the Year.’”
Duncan declared the work Popovich has done this season the best he has observed in any of his 15 seasons playing for him.
“I really think so,” he said. “He’s put so many guys into our system. We’ve been playing with two very young guys starting for us the entire year; getting all those guys acclimated on the fly with very little practice time. All those things, he’s done an unbelievable job with it.

About 30 seconds before he got hurt, the announcers were saying how he's finally healthy and I wondered why he was still on the floor.
BTW, how is Doug Collins not coach of the year? Weren't they absolutely horrid for years until he came in and taught that shitty group to play defense and share the ball?

He's turned Philly around to be a .500 team for two years. I don't know how is that COY material in your book.

Because they were total and utter shit before he arrived. Getting Elton Brand to give effort and getting Andre Iguodala to play smart are worth COY by themselves. :lol
BTW, Alvin Gentry is on the list in the OP, and his team is actually .500 and didn't even make the playoffs.

The turning a shit team to .500 schtick only works for one year. If you're two years in and you're still playing .500 ball, you haven't changed for the better, made any more progress or innovated.

The Sixers at their best are .500 team. That's why I am surprised they didn't make any significant moves at the deadline. They have tried with that group of guys and they need to shake up stuff and try something different.

Fair enough. Philly is above .500 this year and Phoenix hasn't been since they made the west finals, though. Collins shouldn't be CoY, but he damn sure should get a mention before Gentry.
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
Gentry gets a mention because Doug's roster is more stacked and yet they are at the same level.
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
No Monty WIlliams?
To have the record that team did, he should be investigated for using black magic....
-
Re: Aldridge: Pop is COY; Parker 1st Team All-NBA
Would be great to see Parker on the 1st team but no way he gets voted in over CP3. Pop though sealed COY today after the Rose debacle by Thib.

I don't know about that, but it's pretty certain that the Suns would have been much better than 8th in the East if they were there instead of Philly.

IIRC the votes are sent in before the playoffs start.

Voters should be on the phone right now. No way Thib deserves that honor now.

Injuries can happen at any time. The only thing I can think off is maybe he should have slowly built up D. Rose's minutes.

With the depth they have at that position, there's no way Rose should be in a game up 12 with a minute and a half to go.
