I'm prepared to be very very disappointed, but my expectations for Richards, Ajinca, and Denmon are really high. Very excited to see them.

Re: Summer league roster is up
Ajinca is one dude that if he got his inside game together and prided himself on blocking shots could become a major player. Clock is ticking at the age of 24.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Will be interesting to see how they split time between Anderson and Denmon.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Damn, crazy how young Kawhi is...2nd youngest on the team
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Ajinca ? wow I didn't expect that !
u imagine parker diaw de colo ajinca :lmao
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Low expectations for Richards but it's nice to get to see him play some.
Really keeping an eye on Ajinca, Green, and Denmon.
Forgot about Wilkerson. Will be interesting to see if he's improved or not.
Surprised Leonard is on the team but thrilled.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Ajinca has the tools to be what the Spurs need. The last time I saw him play, he was the homeless man's version of Marcus Camby. Let's hope he's improved ;his stats look pretty good from last year, but it was only French league.
He's still young enough to be a worthy project big. You can't teach that type of size, tbh.

who will be yours starting 5 from this roster in summer league ?

Ajinca
Dawson
Leonard
Denmon
Joseph
?
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
I have high expectations on Anderson...and Denmon : they both could well be signed as our third sf and g.
Anything worth a look from the bigs (expecially Richards and Ajinca) wopuld be a pleasant surprise...as for now none of them has shown anything near a possible rotation player.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
The plan is complete. RC's adopted son is on the summer league roster...
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
I don't think Kawhi should be on the summer league team. He has nothing to prove. Just added opportunity for injury IMO.

Agreed.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
I'm halfway scared to see Kwahi on the team because of the danger of an injury. He's now a proven veteran and shouldn't be exposed to year around play.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Kawhi isn't known to be injury prone, and probably won't even play that many minutes. relax y'all.

Disagree...No different than any foreign player or team USA players improving there game and getting reps. Kid is 21 years old, he needs to be on the court.

well it isn't like he hasn't been playing pick up games in the summer anyway. besides, he'll probably only play 1-2 games.

Kid is 21 years old and your worried year round play...Do you really think he would just be at home sitting on the couch resting for the next couple of months anyways? Kid well probably get a 10-12 minutes to work on his offensive game.

Re: Summer league roster is up
It will be quite an adjustment for Kawhi to go from practising against the US national team to playing in the chaotic summer league.

Why didn't France call him up for the Olympics?

That's a roster full of intriguing prospects and possibilities...a nice sub-plot to an otherwise boring summer.

Not really, he's going from competing against some of the very best to going up against unproven young guns. I mean, it's a big dip for him but when you can hang with the big boys, summer league should be a breeze and time for him to work a little more on his game. I'm sure he's looking forward to it.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Funny that Ajinca was once considered a better prospect than Nicolas Batum, when they were touring the US together pre-draft days.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Ajinca is a Bobcats and Mavs reject, IIRC...

But Noah, Seraphin, and Mahinmi aren't on the final roster for France.

Noah is still rehabbing injury iirc. I dunno about the other two but really no team needs 4 centers.

As previously noted, it may be a look see to what Leonard can do as the go to guy. He will have to fill that role eventually and what better place to see how he reacts then his first summer camp.
-

That is correct. FWIW, he and Mahinmi were competing for playing time at the 3rd center spot on the Mavs. After some back and forth during the season, Mahinmi eventually won the battle.
Still surprised to see Ajinca on the roster. Hope he's got his act together.
Also surprised to see Leonard on the roster and more surprised to see Anderson. I guess he's showcasing his wares for another team.
Pulled up some highlights on JaMychal Green. Though he's got some flaws, he is a very interesting kid. Probable face-up 4-man.

I think the point is that this kid has so much promise when he was drafted a few years ago by the Bobtails. The fact is that, thus far, he's not lived up to that promise. I saw him last two seasons ago and he had some flashes of athletic brilliance as the Mavs backup, backup center. However, after only a small handful of games, he regressed from Carlisle's rotation altogether.
Hopefully, he's been working his tail off and is now ready to seize a possible opportunity to stick with the contender.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
I seriously doubt Ryan Richards is a player...but I guess you never know until you see guys matched up with other decent talent.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Very interested in seeing Richards. Not expecting much but it will be nice to see him play against some good talent.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Is there an echo in here? :)
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
When does the league start? I'll be watching this roster, so many people I've been waiting to see.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
I think Leonard might be included to be a focal point on offense. I'm sure the staff wants to try a few new things with him and now have the luxury of time to do it. It's a pretty solid roster, but I don't see many other standout scorers -- L.D. Williams and Denmon could do well, as could a healthy Anderson.
Between Joseph and Cedric Jackson there should be fairly decent point guard play (no Squeaky? Mild surprise).
Nice mix of big men. They will always be able to park one of them somewhere on the perimeter so there should be a decent amount of space in which to operate.
Moses Ehambe is one of those guys who could go on a Gary Neal-like shooting spree on a summer league squad like this one.
Hope everyone gets a good look. Shouldn't be a problem to run Spurs sets using almost any of these players I recognize.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
this team is stacked
could probably beat the bobcats
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Is Cedric Jackson the point guard who played for us back in 2010 before Garrett Temple was picked over him?
Otherwise, interesting roster. Ajinca and Green are potential bigs the Spurs could pick up. This is an important summer league for Anderson and Joseph obviously.
Leonard is clearly streets ahead of the rest.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Would have liked to see Hanga on the team. But having Richards play is interesting. If he does well, above expectations, do they sign him and put him as Diaws backup*?
*After they trade or amnesty Bonner. I want him off this team, damnit!
Green and Alexis are also interesting prospects. I'm definitely excited about our SL team this year.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
This roster looks very interesting and I look forward to watching the games if I get a chance.
Regarding Richards, can he be signed by the Toros without getting a Spurs contract? If he is ever to amount to anything, he is going to need to develop and I would hate for the Spurs to have the meter running while the kid stinks it up only to have him begin to come into his own when the contract is up for renewal.
-

Theoretically, yes. It's a little convoluted but can be and has been done. Would be unlikely to see a foreigner agreeing to it, though.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
Thanks, I recall some discussion from when he was drafted that he wanted to play over here, even if it was the D-League rather than Europe. Of course, he went back across the pond.
I would make the trek to Austin to see the kid live if he were to sign.
-
Re: Summer league roster is up
I'm pretty excited about this roster! Lot of good names, should be a good SL... and I agree w/ thinking they probably want to see Kawhi with some time as the go-to guy.

This.
When we didn't draft a big man, I was hoping we'd bring in one of the more promising undrafted big men for a look, and Green definitely qualifies. Athleticism and shotblocking, some garbage collection, plus a midrange shot. Some character questions, which I'm sure was why he didn't get drafted.
I could even hold my nose and live with Bonner hanging around for the season if he was a placeholder while Green developed behind him.
I'm also excited to see Ajinca out there. He has some definite red flags, but if he can turn the corner, man what a talent.
-

Your points make sense, but there are some differences: Team USA are playing with teammates. If the guys he's going to start alongside aren't there, then there's nothing for him to gain that he can't do at the Spurs' practice facility. All told, he's probably the Spurs' third most important player. Putting him on the floor with and against guys who are desperate just to make a team seems like a risk to me.

That makes sense. Putting him on a team where he's the alpha dog and seeing if he can become something special is worth a shot. He's certainly given us reason to think he can.

If anything, he'll learn to be more aggressive or more explosive and look for his shots more there. I'm glad he's in the summer roster.

The youngest is Cory Joseph. Ryan Richards and Marcus Denmon give the Spurs (regular team) 4 of the 5 youngest on the summer team.
I think Kawhi is there to give the team a Spurs influence. He will see minutes in order to build his leadership abilities.
Anderson, Byers, Dawson, Joseph and Leonard have all seen time with the Spurs.

You're correct mate. It was actually in Richards' pre-draft interview where he said he didn't want to be drafted and stashed in Europe. He said he didn't mind being up and down the D-League, but didn't want to go back to Europe. Hopefully the Spurs see something they like in him.
I mentioned a few weeks back in the thread under his name that I thought he was really thin and didn't look particularly tall when I saw him in Kent, England. Texas2Step (No step / 1/2 a step or whatever his name is) claimed he was "up to 250", which I said at the time was b0llocks after seeing him in the flesh. I noticed he's listed at 6ft 11" and 230lbs. I'd seen reports before that he was 7ft or 7ft 1", but I think 6ft 11" is probably more accurate.
My main issue: Isn't 230lbs too light for a 6ft 11" PF? I think Durant is about 230lbs. Converting that into stone so it means more to me, that is 16st 6lbs, which just seems way too light. I think he'd even get pushed around by The Red Rocket.

Who cares about RR wt numbers at this point. My biggest concern is his skill level, right now up to this point he has not shown any NBA skills and quite honestly probably not even Dleague skills.

Yeah, fairpoint mate. I was thinking ahead to the future with the assumption he can actually play. Let's make sure he's not a bum first.

Is 230 light for a 6'11 PF? Dirk plays at 7'0 and 245 according to the NBA. The NBA says Tim Duncan used to play at 6'11 and 255; his last two years he's slimmed down by 20 or so lbs to ease his knees, so he's playing somewhere around 235...KG came into the league at 6'11" and 220.
I think the real question is what style will he play, and how strong is he?
