Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Quote:
Ideally, Brand would want to clear waivers, according to the source. If no team submitted a claim, he would become an unrestricted free agent and would be able to sign with any team, including those over the cap, as long as they had cap exceptions.

Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Meh, not gonna happen; but it would be awesome if the Spurs signed him for the minimum. Damn good defensively and is a reasonable fit offensively. But, yeah, won't happen.
EDIT:I guess this is what I meant to say.

Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
He's not crappy enough not to get claimed. Plus, if he is interested in the Spurs Cuban will surely claim him just for that reason alone.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
God no! Brand is productive, but he's old and undersized. Spurs need youth, size and athleticism.
Besides, I understand the Mavs will go hard after him - especially now that Haywood has been amnestized. THey can have him.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Billups hoped that too and the Clippers claimed him.

If this doesn't work we need to try to get in on the Dwight Howard sweepstakes.Even a 3-way with Brooklyn and Orlando.
We could get Brook Lopez for sending Tiago, Blair and Bonner to Brooklyn.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
The Dallas Mavericks will make a "very aggressive bid" for Elton Brand in the amnesty waiver process, a source close to the situation told ESPNDallas.com's Jeff Caplan on Wednesday. The Philadelphia 76ers have used their amnesty clause on the 6-foot-8 Brand, making him eligible for teams under the salary cap to put in bids. Whichever team places the winning bid will earn Brand's services and will pay that amount off the $18.2 million he's owed next season, the final year of his contract. ESPN.com

Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Dallas specifically amnestied Brenda to make a large bid on Brand's last year of his contract. It's impossible for him to end up on the Spurs or Nets.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
The only thing I can think of is that the Mavs won't want his contract (even a muted version) eating into their cap space and he is guaranteed 3 years if the claim him.

Yeah, sucks; Dallas has roughly $6.2 million of capspace left after signing Kaman, doing the trade with Indiana, and amnestying Brenda. I do think they'll have to renounce Delonte West though to make that bid. Maybe the bid gets dropped a million or so if they want to lock West up.

2012-13 is the last year of Brand's deal.

Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
brands to old to be claimed by a rebuild team which are all young teams/under the cap
only gonna be useful on a contender
lol at dallas if they believe theyre contenders and they have irk who would be eating up a majority of the PF minutes
theyre building up a good first round fodder team to save face after everything blew up on them
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
^ Brand gives them an expiring to make a run at free agents next year.

They're just trying to stay a competitive playoff team while maintaining flexibility for big name free-agents.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
they dont need to pick up brand to save capspace
they could just save some money by not picking him up
i think brand could get up to 3 mil or more
and mavs are better of tanking
dirk can party all summer again and come back out of shape and unmotivated
get them shabazz and free agents
core of old dirk/old marion/? with no bench wont get it done
vs spurs/clips/memphis/new lakers/okc

I would take him over Bonner. But then again, I would take an old mop over Bonner. At least the mop could defend by tripping a player...:lol

Be nice to the gingerbread man.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
I think he's looking $$$, which won't be the Spurs. If he's not claimed he can sign a new multi year contract. His current one is expiring and he doesn't get extra cash from the team who claims him.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
What about sign and trade?
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
I hate how every thread has a trade proposal packaging Blair and Bonner, or Blair, Neal, and Bonner, or in this case, Blair, Splitter, and Bonner.
No NBA team is going to trade for Matt Bonner. They wouldn't want a multi year commitment to a below average player. No team wants Blair/Bonner. The fact is Blair makes peanuts and eats regular season minutes. Damn worth keeping
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
But as far as Brand goes I don't see why the Mavs wouldn't make a good offer. All the marquee free agents are gone, they are desperate to add pieces, and Brand's contract only has 1 season left, so they could claim him for an amount like 10 mil and let him play out his one year contract and still have cap flexibility next offseason...
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Dallas will not forgo trying to build a championship worthy roster during the Dirk era. They will do what they need to get a competitive team that will make the playoffs.
That said, if you have Dirk, Kaman, Marion, and Wright, you may want to shore up your guards/small forward positions.

They did last season.
36-30 and swept in the first round.

They thought they still had enough to compete and repeat. Obviously, they thought wrong. But they won't surrender completely to the lottery if Dirk is on the roster.

DO not want

I read Mavs will bid in the ballpark of $4-5M for Brand. Next.

They didn't have enough to compete. They had enough to get into the playoffs while retaining the capspace to make a go at Deron Williams.
As for Brand, unless he threatens to retire (don't know why he would) or not report, ala Billups or Fisher, he is going to Dallas.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Free-agent forward Elton Brand is hoping the Dallas Mavericks submit the winning bid for his services among eligible teams and claim him off of amnesty waivers, according to a source close to the 33-year-old.

Good question. Brand gets the same money no matter who claims him. The only way he gets more is if he goes unclaimed.

Look at the other teams with cap space.
Would you rather play in Dallas or Sacramento? Charlotte?
You get the idea.

I don't think he has much choice. Hopefully Cuban will run out of cap room soon. With additions of Kaman and Brand, I don't think they look all that great still. But he is succeeding in preventing teams like Spurs from adding complementary pieces which could take them from contender to champion.

That's my guess, anyway.

Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
The winning bid will be revealed after 4 p.m. CT on Friday.
Teams under the salary cap, which include the Mavs, Portland Trail Blazers and Phoenix Suns, among others, had first shot to bid for Brand. The Mavs were expected to make an "aggressive" bid and they have high hopes of landing the 6-foot-8 veteran forward and adding him to a front line with Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Kaman.

Dirk, Kaman, Brand, and Marion.
How is that much worse than Duncan, Blair, Splitter, and Bonner?

Because if you're going to list Dallas' 3 best bigs and their SF, the corresponding Spurs would be Duncan, Diaw, Splitter, and Leonard.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Marion plays 4 probably as much as Diaw.
I'll give you Duncan, Splitter, Blair/Bonner and Diaw
vs.
Dirk, Kaman, Brand, and Marion.

Not true. Marion played 86% of his minutes at SF last season. Diaw played 100% of his minutes with the Spurs at PF or C.
So, it's still Leonard to complete the list of comparable players.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
I still think Dirk, Kaman, Brand, and Marion
are no worse than
Duncan, Diaw, Splitter, and Leonard.

Ok, but it's a much different equation than one that includes Bonner and Blair.

Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
Yeah, this is exactly what the framers of the amnesty envisioned.
-
Re: Elton Brand hopes to not be claimed after amnestied, may consider Spurs?
I think it's a good sign that it only took $2.1 million to get him. That makes me think that there's not a lot of interest from teams to pick up a veteran PF. You would have to think that Scola is even less appealing because of the length of his contract.
So I'm pretty optimistic that Scola goes unclaimed.
