Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
Hassan Whiteside has been waived by the Kings, which means Spurs can potentially go after a Center who although still has a very raw game, he is pretty good defensively and can serve as an interior presence. I say we try to get him over to the Spurs!

Re: Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
If he's down with a nonguaranteed camp invitation.

Re: Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
Someone will give him more than that.

Re: Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
He's about the same level as Ajinca and Richards. He can block shots but that's about it. Add in character red flags and I'd probably rather just go with Ajinca, Richards or Dawson, tbh.

His stock has already been pretty low because of his raw abilities, but the kid shows he has huge potential to be a good defender and blocker which can contribute hugely to the team.

They can keep him, then.
And waive him.

Because he's able to block shots, it makes him more valuable than Ajinca and Richards

19 games and 111 minutes in 2 NBA seasons.

Because he's unable to get on the floor for perennial doormat Sacramento, that makes him a dubious investment.

Someone's always going to throw too much money at size. The Spurs did it with Elson and Butler.

Couldn't this have been said about Danny Green? I don't know if the OP's suggestion of bringing him in is wise, but sometimes teams become perennial doormats because of inept coaching and/or a terrible FO.

Danny didn't get on the floor with 59-win Cleveland and 61-win Spur teams.

So Green was a bad example
But I feel that the point still stands that isn't always on the players.

Rather have Martin or O'Neal.

No doubt, but when a guy plays only 111 minutes in 2 seasons he's definitely a big part of the problem.

Re: Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
Didn't the Spurs reportedly show interest in Whiteside during the pre-draft process? Trying to think back that far, but I'm not sure it matters since he clearly hasn't progressed in his post-draft process.

Well, of course. The only problem is those players are too big name and will most likely sign elsewhere than with the Spurs

No way.
For basketball reasons.....

Averages 17.2 boards per 48...doesnt sound that bad. I know he's rail this but his wingspan and d sounds nice.

He also averages 7 blocks per 48. Until you reveal that he's averaged 6 minutes a game in 19 NBA games in 2 years.

Re: Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
Maybe worth a Summer league or training camp invite, but I've got to agree, 6 minutes per game in only 19?

You know, I thought Elson was always worth it solely for the tremendous pressure he put on defenses in transition. That's why I'll never mind signing a raw big man who can run the floor.
Butler? That was a trade based in part on potential. No one could predict he would retire from basketball at the age of 22 while under contract.

Agreed on all points. Elson wasn't perfect, but he contributed to a title. Butler lost interst after getting paid.
All that said, the Spurs did throw money at size that year, and it's probably understandable if they're a little snake-bit about it. I'll never mind taking a flyer on size or size combined with defense. The offensive abilities of the Spurs at this point make the addition of a defense/blocks specialist a worthwhile ambition, even if he can't shoot a lick.

Re: Hassan Whiteside waived by the Sacramento Kings
Whiteside was mentioned last year as a possible trade-deadline target (maybe for James Anderson?). At that time I said he sucked, or at least had some serious concerning factors, and had a few people flame on me for it. Apparently, I'm not nuts. Vindication.
