Had Spain not shot the ball very well, the game would have been much closer. It took an insane effort for Argentina to get the game to single digits.
Spain will still edge Argentina, quite frankly. Los Spanish are too big and too skilled for the Argentinians. El Argentinians got the game to single digits, but they still lost by 20.

On a good day, I think Arg can be victorious. It'll take Spain playing subpar to average for Arg to pull it out though.

Not many teams can do that against Spain, not when they're this strong imo. So far, that list only contains one team.

TBH, when Brazil and Russia play Spain in pool play (the same group), I can see one of them knocking Spain off. Russia is a big team that can shoot lights out. I love how Brazil plays and if they can keep a close contest vs the United States, I think they can do the same against Spain. I have a feeling Spain will lose once in pool play, and if so it'll be to either one of the teams I've mentioned. I still think Spain will get to the Gold Medal game though, but them losing once in pool play may happen.

Re: Argentina v Spain starting now
Spain is going to take a massive dump on Br:lolzil. The only reason why our game against them was close was because the United States came out like shit.
:lol 5 second quarter points

:lol Maybe...
Big difference between our perimeter and Spain's perimeter though. Spain doesn't have the athletes to pressure and wear Brazil down for a full 40. I think Brazil can run an effective offensive gameplan (pick and roll & playing inside and out) throughout the course of the game. One thing I can't see happening is Alex Garcia consistently knuckle-balling three pointers from the corner.
I wouldn't be so confident had Brazil fielded a weakness inside, but they're big and physical (Splitter, notwithstanding :lol) enough to bother the Gasols imo.
-
Re: Argentina v Spain starting now
Spain doesn't need to do that against any team not named United States though. They can wear the rest of the field with their skill and rely on Ibaka for their last line of defense.
One issue with Spain though is if they get pick and rolled to death. The Gasols and Ibaka are not the fastest in rotating to those.

Re: Argentina v Spain starting now
We'll have to wait and see how the games are played out...
I'll be looking forward to that Spain-Brazil match.

I think it's closer than what people think, despite this game. Argentina did beat Spain in the last Worlds, and that was without Manu IIRC.
it's all irrelevant anyways, because unless Team USA has a major chokejob (unlikely), these two teams will be playing for sloppy seconds.

Re: Argentina v Spain starting now
I think teams in these games rank as follow:
1st tier: Team USA
2nd tier: Spain, France, Argentina, Brazil, a dark horse team (ie: Russia)
3rd tier: everyone else
Given there's only 3 medals, and games are played every other day, it should be fun to watch.

Re: Argentina v Spain starting now

Spain is probably the top on the 2nd tier, but this Team USA is staaaaaaaacked, IMO. Lebron is playing out of his mind, and Durant is also something else. They are carrying some old baggage like Kobe, but I don't think he'll be enough to kill their chances completely(*)...
(*) Provided he doesn't take 30+ shots in a game...

I agree with your categorizing of the teams in terms of tier. Had Rubio been playing, I'd probably move Spain up a bit...but that ain't the case

Spain is certainly not on the same tier than France, Argentina and Brazil tbh
it is
1. USA
2. Spain
3. the rest

Re: Argentina v Spain starting now
Don't know about that... I think they have the potential to be on a tier of their own, but their last Worlds wasn't anything to write home about... tbh, I don't recall if Pau played that one...

pau didn't play back in the 2010 WC, if that's what you're wondering.

Spain is much better than any other team, not named USA.
And could win the gold, maybe.
Tbh, Spain has become a sports superpower.
