Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
I love RATM but don't agree with much of their politics either. They are so far to the left as to be almost comical.
Morello graduated from Harvard, so the fact that this piece is so well written isn't a surprise.
He's also one of the greatest guitarists I've ever had the pleasure to listen to
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
a quote from Morello
Quote:
"I never had any real desire to work in politics but if there was any ember burning in me, it was extinguished working in that job because of two things: one of them was the fact that 80 per cent of the time I spent with the Senator (Alan Cranston-D), he was on the phone asking rich people for money. It just made me understand that the whole business was dirty. He had to compromise his entire being every day. The other was the time a woman phoned up to the office and wanted to complain that there were Mexicans moving into her neighborhood. I said to her, 'Ma'am, you're a damn racist,' and she was indignant. I thought I was representing our cause well, but I got yelled at for a week by everyone for saying that! I thought to myself that if I'm in a job where I can't call a damn racist a damn racist, then it's not for me "

Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
So if Paul Ryan is from the establishment and evil, where does Obama come from and don't say Kenya or Africa? It's a rhetorical question since Obama, Biden, Ryan, and Romney all work for the establishment and are big government tools and big spenders.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
anyone who runs for president is tendentially (if not in fact) an establishmentarian and a big spender
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Paul Ryan is such a transparent poser, tbh..... you can't be an "outsider" when your policies are garden-variety neocon shit and you're running with Willard, tbh.....
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Dee Snider doesn't want his music as part of Paul Ryan's schtick either:

Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Wouldn't a musician want anyone as a fan? I mean if you are trying to be successful, wouldn't you want to have fans from all walks of life because of the whole word of mouth thing? Person A likes a certain band or singer and tells Person B about it and it goes on and on and on and a fanbase forms. Not trying that it's 100 percent all the time like that. I'm just saying that liberal celebs should the fuck up about it and be thankful that they have the fans that they have despite political differences.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
As far as I can tell, musicians aren't asking Ryan to stop being a fan. They're asking him to stop playing their music in his political rallies. I guess it makes sense if they don't share the same political views and don't want the band associated with those views.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
caring about what a che supporter says lol
especially when said che supporter is doing what che was against in the first place. smh
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
^ sounds like Paul Ryan, tbh
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Really? How so? Ryan just said he likes a band.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
And he embodies the exact opposite of the band's message.
Apparently, being a fan of something but not trying to act like that something isn't all that rare.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Ah. I thought you meant the calling out part.
Yeah, morello's skin color wasn't che's favorite no top of being a musician.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
This seems to happen every 4 years or so. When will Republicans learn to just stick with Toby Keith songs?
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
:lol @ Ryan liking RATM. Does he not listen to lyrics of songs?
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Personally, lyrics are the last thing I listen to. I like many bands that sing about stuff I don't necessarily agree with but i'm all about the music first.
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
Nobody listens to music for the lyrics. If an artist in a genre of music you do like has lyrics that you enjoy, all the better, but if you like hip hop you're not going to start listening to a country artist just because he's got some lyrics you'd enjoy.

Doh! Looks like the GOP is going to have to track down Lee Greenwood again........

Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
just looked a little harder, it seems he goes back and forth from texas republican to democrat to texas republican.

Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
I don't know, I have a hard time thinking Joe Lieberman would listen to a Neo-Nazi Jazz band because he likes the percussion.

Well, you can't generalize, IMO. Some people like the tunes and some people identify with the message. I doubt guys like Yoni would love music preaching how cool Barry is, regardless of the melody.
RATM actually has a fairly strong message attached to the music.

People may identify with the message, but they're not going to look for messages outside of their preferred genre. How many people who identify with RATM's message would have come across that message in the first place if it was set to country music?
-
Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
What's hilarious to me is that they have big mouth geniuses like Ted Nugent and Hank Williams Jr out making asses of themselves for the GOP, but no one wants to use any of their shitty songs :lmao

Don't know enough about country to answer that, tbh

I think you're missing the point. If you like Rap Music, would you see the typical person enjoying Neo-Nazi/White Supremacist rap (assuming you don't identify with them)? How many individuals would say, "Well I don't listen to their lyrics, but the beat is hot!"
El Nono was being conservative - RATM's music has an extremely strong message which is diametrically opposed to everying Ryan is about.
I don't know how you can ignore a group basically saying "Fuck Republican White Men" just because you like the drum solos.

If you like rap music, but not country, are you going to listen to a country artist because that country artist has a message you agree with? No. You're not even going to know that country artist has a message you agree with because you don't like country music and don't listen to it. That's the point I'm trying to make. Anyone's search for a lyrical message in music is going to be limited to the type of music they like to listen to.
btw..........I like RATM and don't give two shits about their message. :)

the band's name is RAGE AGAINST THE MACHINE. you dont have to listen to the lyrics to figure out what they stand for...

But this is a different argument altogether. We're talking about music that Ryan indeed listens to and is exposed to the message of the band.
But hey, anyone is free to listen to whatever they want, I agree. I just wouldn't be surprised knowing RATM's music and outspoken nature that they'd tell him to fuck off.

I know full well what they stand for. I just don't care. I like how they sound, so I listen.

Paul Ryan thought they meant the "Congressional Discretionary Spending" machine, specifically.

well then, I wonder how many RATM cd's will be bought so that they can be destroyed as soon as republicans are told what their message is.
I mean the Dixie chicks didnt even have a message in their music and they suffered an enormous jump in sales in order to destroy their cd's right after they said something about the former president.

Okay, so he's exposed to the message. Now what?

I wouldn't be surprised either. Ryan himself probably isn't surprised.

The "Machine" they rage against is the whole government... which includes democrats.

Has RATM ever penned a set of lyrics without telling somebody to fuck off?:lol

Nobody is a big word.
I don't think even the greatest lyrics can get me to listen to music I don't like the sound of. But lyrics that are bad/uninteresting or that express a point of view with which I specifically disagree can certainly keep me from liking music I would otherwise enjoy.

That's pretty much the point I was trying to make, you've just done a better job at it than I was.

Re: Tom Morello on one of his fans: Paul Ryan
I thought Morello was a big Obama backer. I get that Morello and his Rage buddies are pissed but I don't really think Paul Ryan should give a fuck about it to be honest. I've never understood why these bands and singers act like they are on their period when some evil neo-con plays one of their songs at one of their rallies. Don't these ungrateful uppity rich douchebags want free publicity and attention?
I don't think you have to focus all of your attention on the lyrics of Rage Against the Machine. When I hear Guerilla Radio, I don't think of Guerilla warfare and guerillas taking over the radio. I mainly think about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2. That was a great game, tbh.

They get more attention by saying that they dont want douche bag Paul Ryan to play their music. It's pretty obvious that they will get more free publicity by saying they oppose what dipshit Ryan represents.

Like is said, let's get fucked up on drugs, eat Mexican food, and talk about how shitty our lives and the American government is.
You're a druggy philosopher IMO
