I thought the most compelling line of Castro's speech was that the American Dream is not a sprint or even a marathon, but a relay. This line resonated wth me. Even though the focus is often on Hispanics, and to some extent Asians, there are also plenty of Americans with roots in Central and Eastern Europe who have not been in this country that long either. My dad was only a second generation American and my grandparents did not graduate from high school. It was important to them for my dad to get an education and he graduated from college. Now, he has 3 kids with Master's Degrees and of the grandchildren, 1 has a Masters and 4 are in graduate school right now.
I also very much appreciated Michelle Oabma saying that success is not about how much money you make. I am pretty tired of hearing the Republican party frame success in that way, and I thought she did a good job of countering that notion.
