thinking of getting another puppy soon, my bullmastiff is too stubborn/dickheaded doesnt listen and since he's 9 and won't be around forever i figure i want something more trainable this time around. must be a capable guard, affectionate, loyal, and trainable/smart. don't really care about grooming, i'll do the work if i have to as long as it listens and doesn't act like a tard in the house. something that will be good outdoors most of the day in a large yard and indoors at night so basically in and out. ability to withstand heat not an issue (yes i actually custom built a doghouse with a small window unit in it) so what say you?

Re: recommend the best dog breed
redzero and dpg trolling in a serious thread i sed
The Vizsla is expressive, gentle, and loving. Keen and trainable to a high degree, they need mental stimulation daily. They need a patient, calm, firm hand. If they do not see you as a strong authority figure they will become stubborn. Reliable with children, loving to play for hours. Without extensive daily exercise they may be too energetic and excitable for very young toddlers, but are excellent for energetic kids. Able to adapt quickly to family life, and are generally good with other dogs. They are very athletic, and when lacking in exercise they may become destructive or neurotic. Socialize them well to people, places, noises, dogs and other animals. It is very important to obedience train your Vizsla. Without enough exercise, they can be overly eager, prancing around you in sheer excitement. This breed is highly trainable and very willing to please; if you can get them to understand exactly what it is you want of them. If you do not train this breed they may become difficult to handle and control. Example: See Video of a Vizsla who needs more exercise. Notice how very eager to please the dog is, yet has more built up energy than she knows what to do with. She is obviously stressed and not relaxed. Vizslas tend to chew. This breed is not for everyone. If you want a calm dog and are not willing to walk a couple of miles or jog at least one mile a day, do not choose a Vizsla. Without proper exercise, they can easily become high-strung. They have many talents such as: tracking, retrieving, pointing, watchdog and competitive obedience. The Vizsla is a hunting dog and may be good with cats they are raised with, but should not be trusted with animals such as hamsters, rabbits and guinea pigs etc... Be sure to always be your dogs pack leader to avoid any negative behaviors such as guarding furniture, food, toys, and so on. Well balanced Vizslas, who receive enough exercise, and have owners who are true pack leaders will not have these issues. These behaviors can be reversed, once the owners start displaying leadership, discipline, and provide enough exercise, both mental and physical.
They are very energetic, but if you train them properly they can be amazing. Very energetic though, but very loving and loyal. I have multiple friends with Vizslas and they are great.

My uncles chow bit me in the face when I was younger, fuck them and their purple tongues. I've got two American Pitbulls Terriers and am looking to adopt a third. I have a Pitbull rescue near me that specializes in picking the good ones from the shelters and puts them through temperament testing before making them available for adoption. I'll never buy a puppy again. They make shitty guard dogs though, they are too sweet.
They are very energetic, but if you train them properly they can be amazing. Very energetic though, but very loving and loyal. I have multiple friends with Vizslas and they are great.
i appreciate your serious input but ive got to think that you just posted that for the energetic/taking them on jogs bit tbh. those dogs are too small for what i'm looking for imho, kind of leaning towards a german shepherd as TSA said pitbulls aren't good guards and i'm looking for a good guard.

No I promise didn't post it because of the jogging. I have several friends with them and they are super smart and really affectionate. They do require a lot of going outside/playing, but I posted that so you could see it. They take a little more work, but seemed to fit what you were looking for. Not really guard dogs though, but they are really good dogs and listen well if you do the proper training.

does anyone here actually have experience owning german shepherds?
doberman pinscher hands down best dog of all time. loyal to the teeth, obedient, loving, will bro it up with you. loves women and women are obsessed with them. knows when to chill and when to be active. also a shorthaired dog so you can keep them in the house. also, one of the smartest dogs in the world. they read your mind.
German Shepherds are awesome, we have one and their are 4 more from the same family tree in my family. They're big, friendly and loving to their owners, but very protective of the home. Good dogs imo

Re: recommend the best dog breed
I have a King Shepherd, he's 2 years old now, but I would only recommend owning one if you are 100% committed to fully training it and accepting it's social flaws, tbh..
Many of them are skittish and overprotective, tbh..along with Dobermans, they are probably the most versatile breed(protective, intelligent, athletic, playful) and from my experience, most of them are aloof and won't invade the personal space of your guests(like a lot of bully breeds)..
My dog is highly intelligent, but very skittish and overprotective..we socialized him very well, but he has weak nerves, although that's probably due to poor breeding..

Get a real dog if you're going to get one. Don't be that guy with the Paris Hilton-sized dog. Be dedicated at training them when they're puppies. The good thing is that--no matter the breed--they are all hardwired with a keen sense of smell and a hatred for dark-skinned minorities

The bad rep that Pitbulls get is frustrating, like you said, they are very loving and extremely loyal.
Yeah, when Pitbulls are bred and raised by someone like Mike Vick then they become mean spirited killers. The same would happen if Mike Vick raised a German Sheperd to win him money in fights.

Labs are some of the greatest dogs out there. But a dog that has not been mentioned yet, and too often gets a bad rap is the rottweiler. I've had a couple throughout my life, and find them to be more loyal than my labs and not as aggressive as you might think. Not to say that my rottie isn't different than my labs. If he doesn't know you, he would rather smell you before you put his hand on him but he has never bit anyone. If you pour attention, exercise, love, and affection into any breed of dog, they can be great dogs as long as they are not inbred.
I always wanted a German Shepherd, but the ones I've known personally tended to be unhealthy---due to inbreeding I suppose. 9 years ago I got a 3/4 Doberman, 1/4 shepherd mix that has been the best dog in the world! He is healthy (we run 2 miles 5 days a week and 5 miles one weekend day), VERY smart, well behaved, friendly and protective of our family.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Rotts, unfortunately a family friend of mine has not. She had one for about 7 years and one day it actually attacked her; weirdest thing, but I've heard of Dobermans doing the same thing. It was quite the brutal attack, she had to have plastic surgery on her face to repair some of the damages.

I have a Rottweiler and she's one of the sweetest dogs I've had. Not the brightest and very aloof, she still think she's a puppy even though she's approaching ten years old. When strangers meet her, they're initially scared of her due to their reputation but she gets along with them just fine and they find out how sweet Rottweilers can be.
On the other hand, I had a German Shepherd and she was mean as shit. Very protective dog and not sociable at all with other people besides our family and not sociable with other dogs. Some dogs can be total loners and not meant to be with other dogs is what I've come to notice.

My GS loves other dogs, but it takes him 30 mins-an hour to warm up to most people..he also hates drug addicts(coke/pills) and relentlessly barks at them, we've noticed..
My girl takes care of her friend's Rotti every few weeks, and while the dog is nice, he's very whiny(like a lot of bully breeds) and kind of dumb, tbh..

Holy shit, I was just about to post that. My brother owned one, most loyal dog I ever saw. For a guy without much experience with dogs he was able to train his pretty easily. Needs a good amount of exercise, but that will true of any breed big and intelligent enough to make an ideal guard dog. Such a good dog that his friends got one from the same rescue outfit. They had a daughter who was about one at the time. The dog was totally gentle and patient with her no matter how grabby or bothersome she got, and absolutely did not fuck around with any strangers who took an interest in that baby.

Guard dog & jogging partners are two different things…If you had trouble training a Mastiff I don’t think you are up for the challenges of training a Lab…
I have owned Large Great Danes & Italian Blue Mastiffs and they practically train themselves…But no way are they up for a jog in the rain or a long walk on a sweltering 100 degree evening…
Labradors on the other hand are game for anything…Frisbee in the rain, mountain biking on trails or a walk at 4 AM…Dogs that like to run take considerable patience, time & energy….Sporting dogs like Labs & Pointers need daily exercise & attention…

What are you talking about? Bullmastiffs are notoriously stubborn and one of the most difficult breeds to train. You compare them to mastiffs but they are only half, the stubbornness comes from the bully side.

Out of those three, I like the German Shepard; he/she is going to be smarter than the Rott or Doberman. Also, he'd be a good running buddy, just make sure not to take him/her running as a pup or until they're close to fully grown, it can mess with their growth plates.

I have had labs and german shepherds (plus german shorthairs, laceys, akitas, and mastiffs) but am really partial to heelers. Hands down the smartest dogs I have ever owned. I've had a red and a currently have a blue.
We were looking for a dog for my daughter. We ran into some people at the vet who had just found this puppy in the street so we ended up adopting it. It looks like an Australian Shepard but some have said it's Border Collie. It has a double back dew claw which the vet told us indicated a high probability of being part Pyranees. I've had a lot of dogs but to this point, this one has been the smartest by far. Still would like to know if it's Aussie or Border Collie.

i've owned both heeler and doberman and have been around shepards.
by far the dog ive had who had the most intelligence "personification" wise was the dobie. the heeler and shepards were incredibly smart, but sometimes they were completely turned off to how you were feeling. they'd understand but just not care.
dobie, on the other hand, you can see when he/she is guilt tripped or tries to respond to your emotions. they really want you to be happy imo, and it's cool to watch them think and process information.
i think any "top ten" smartest dog breeds list will have a dobie on it.

Not trying to troll or talk shit, but getting a dog while you're in college (and in a hard major for that matter) is a huge mistake. Everyone I know who's done it says they regret it and having the responsibility of a dog made college difficult. Just wait till you're done with school.

Girls staying with me so shell help out tbh. Wouldnt try to get a dog if I had to care for it all on my own, that would definitely be a stupid idea.

Frenchies were crossbred/interbred with pugs and terriers in order to reduce their size and to encourage certain aesthetic traits, so it's not surprising they look alike. My mom has a Frenchie and, especially due to his coloring and the fact he's big for the breed (bigger in general, and with longer legs in proportion to his body than is standard), most people think he's just a fat or stocky Boston.
For the record, French Bulldogs are a handful. And are really only advisable for people who are prepared to see acting like an asshole as a charming personality trait and/or a legitimately adorable/funny caught-in-the-act face as a good enough reason to forgive said asshole-ish behavior. Stubborn is an understatement. My mom's is amusing in small doses when I'm visiting, but I'd have lost my mind ages ago if I had to live with him.
