How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I'm trying to gauge the fans opinions here about this guy. How much do we really know about him, other than what we saw at the olympics last summer. They say he is the best forward playing overseas, so where would that put him on this team. If his natural spot in the NBA is 4 he is out of luck starting for this team for obvious reasons and i never see pop moving tim to the 5, Tim does not want to play the 5 and i can't see it happening. So i guess he would come off the bench at 3 or 4 when tim takes breather, i mean if he is as talented as some are saying his spot in the rotation could be a problem, just curious what other loyal Spurs fans are thinking.

Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Not that bad, since horry is here. Hell ya.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?

Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
He's coming. He'll be a huge addition. His value is as a low post scorer off the bench. He's well-coached, hustles his butt off, and has a fine basketball IQ. Absolutely without a doubt he should come over this summer, even with Horry. They fulfill different roles, anyway, although Scola will help Horry limit his minutes throughout the year.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Scola should be friggin huge.

I've followed Scola's play closely in the last 12 months and he is a good fit for us. He can be a starting PF in most of the teams. Having Tim/Horry/Scola/Nazr/Rasho is not a problem since 4 and 5 are almost interchangable and doesn't have any significance these days.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I don't really see why there should a problem with who's playing power forward, center, forward. etc. In this day and age, I feel that the boundries between positions have become blurred. Tim Duncan doesn't always play the PF sometimes he plays the C position. however, he will laways be introduced and considered a PF no matter what.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I could see Horry play SF more in certain match-ups.
Anyway, Scola will help ensure that Duncan and the other starters won't have to play that many minutes per game. They'll be at where they were last year... maybe less.
You also bring him over this year... in order to reach his NBA potential - which will be fairly good - faster.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
You can never have too much front court depth. Especially when you have the 5 man rotation the spurs could have.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
i think scola will be huge. i see him as horry's regular season rest... and a change of pace player. horry can guard long 4s and draw people out to the 3pt line to guard him. scola will probably add more energy and rebounding inside... and he's the future too. (when horry is gone)
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Scola will be an excellent addition for the Spurs.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I want Scola on the Spurs.
But if he costs too much to get out of his deal, I wouldn't hesitate to trade him for a solid player and a pick.

When do you expect we'll start hearing more concrete news about Scola coming to the Spurs with possible money estemates?

Agreed. But before trading him, I'd explore letting him stay over seas one more year and picking up Oberto for less. That way if the Rasho/Nazr choice is ever made and the other player is traded, the Spurs would still have an affordable backup bigman that can play in a motion offense effectively. (Perhaps even more effectively than Rasho or Nazr from a passing perspective.)

Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
bring scola over and we are a lock for the championship.
we can give horry a rest until the playoffs and then let him be fresh and really shine.
Duncan can take less minutes in the regs and the team won't fall apart.

Bringing Oberto over would really be a boost to Tims confidence. He would never again have to worry about being the worst free throw shooter on the team. Oberto makes Tim look like Chauncey Billups at the line by comparison.

Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I think if it comes down to using the full MLE on either Scola or SAR you have to take Shareef. SAR is the proven commodity and that allows you to bring over Scola for nothing next year.
-

If that happens, expect Scola to request a trade. He wants to come over this year, first of all. Then, of course, when he did come here, he'd be stuck third deep behind SAR, who can't crack the starting line-up himself.
If I'm Scola I get asked to be traded to a team that needed me.

Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Great, then the Spurs trade Scola when perhaps his stock is a bit overvalued.

I don't think anybody thinks he's the second coming???????? Just a good solid player who will help this team. Seeing the Olympics, you would be hard pressed not to see he was the second best player on the team.

Second coming of...? Jesus? No. Manu Ginobili? No. Kenny Thomas, but a little taller? Likely. Brian Grant with less bulk? Possibly.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Well, the comparison is already being made of Scola to Ginobili. Other than their nationality, they are rather different.
Sure, Scola might be able to turn into a solid role player in the NBA.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Damn, he has been so hyped up it would be a huge letdown if he weren't here next year.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I understand how good his hype is, but how his skills will translate into the NBA is another story. He's undersized for a big and I don't think he has the wingspan to compensate for that. Maybe he will be able to play bigger than his frame. Also, he's benefitted by playing in situations in which man to man D was not a requirement at some point.
-

Or maybe he is, and we can get him for less than 2 mil a year. I don't see those opportunities coming around very often.
What could we get for him? A draftpick that we turn into either a young kid that wouldn't have near the experience that he has, or a young guy we send to Europe hoping he turns into what scola is now?
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Scola is the player i have been more anxious to get than any other player in the league, the boy is a beast. He shook the world in the olympics, and he will dominate in the NBA only cause he plays with emotion and a lot of heart, something a lot of players in the NBA do not do now a days.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Well, if you ended up with a SAR who was willing to come to SA, be content with reduced minutes and play defense for the MLE perhaps moving Scola doesn't seem that bad.
Scola wouldn't play for peanuts forever. He's an unproven player in this league. How many years of TD's prime would we have to wait for him to find himself in this league?
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Well he might be an unproven player in this league, but he has showed the world he has skills. I would say, that if we get Scola for next season, by after all-star break the spurs will be thinking about starting him. If and only if his defense were to improve from what we have seen. He is a beast no doubt about it, Scola deserves his shot in the NBA.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Andrew Gaze once showed the world his skills. Shane Heal too. And so on. Hey, I hope he tears up the league as a Spur if he's that good, but there are definitely plenty of questions about how he will fit in the NBA.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
i cant believe some of the crap i read last night and this morning... i dont think anyone thinks scola is going to be the second coming of anyone. the guy is the best power forward in europe right now according to alot of people... how well that translates into the nba, no one knows for sure. yet some people are so sure of what he WONT be able to do, that they call him a "project".
manu was the best SG in europe once upon a time, and just as many people talked shit about him. he didnt have the hops that kobe had... he's too thin and wont make it thru 82 games in the rock hard nba... we need someone now instead of later... no time for his learning curve... etc etc etc.
while SOME people in here are talking about the tremendous depth we have at center and point guard... these same people are willing to let a rasho or nazr go, for yet another 4... and bypass scola altogether or trade him. (insane)
you just won a championship. you just resigned a player that plays as your backup 4 for the next 2 years at least. (horry) you have two tradable players and really good depth at the 5 (rasho and nazr) your backcourt is locked up for the future (parker, manu and barry) you only have one SF...
adding the best power forward in europe to backup duncan and horry wouldnt hurt... trading one of those centers for a small forward... or using the rest of the mle for one, wouldnt be a bad idea.
but bashing a guy who hasnt even played a game for you... thats stupid. especially since the guy was on the same team that beat team usa. i recall a block he had on j o'neal, and the smug bastard stepped on him as argentina took the block/reb back upcourt. --- thats enough for me to like him already. (i think that was at the game in indy)

Why can't his game be questioned? Being the best 4 in Europe isn't worth as much as you seem to think it is.

IF SAR where willing to do all that I would bring him over in a sec, but I wouldn't trade Scola. Just leave him over and let his European contract run out, and bring him over next year. I wouldn't give up on what people call the best PF in Europe that easily. The guys what? 25?
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
wouldnt trade him for rasho
so...not that bad
hope hes good though
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Being the best power forward in Europe is not saying much. Do you know what happens to all those college power forwards who bust in the NBA because they were too short? They go and star in Europe.
As far as making the jump to the NBA, "power forward" is perhaps the biggest jump between Europe and the NBA. Malik Rose, Corliss Williamson and Clearance Weatherspoon would dominate in Europe as power forwards.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
well seeing as everyone's jumped off the coca-scola train, maybe he isnt worth crap... here i thought the offseason would bring back horry, add a young talented power forward with energy and a SF to truly backup bruce and one day replace him. (soon) having rasho and nazr is the kind of depth and talent base that can lead to a pretty good small forward. (trading big for small)
but since people think scola is a one armed midget who's blind in one eye and can hardly tie his shoes... plus i dont like the malik reference... even if he is 3 inches taller.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I wouldn't say "everyone" has left. Plus, I'm only being a skeptic and realist.

well the realist in me says that if you dont start treating bowen more like horry (mins wise in the regular season) and you trade rasho away for yet another 4... you lose scola... and if you dont/cant extend nazr... we're going to be wondering what happened.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Ginobili was widely known as an athletic freak and an amazing whirling dervish in Europe. Nobody knew how his game would translate because nobody ever had seen anything like him before.
Scola's pretty conventional. He's got OK size for Europe, but he's a little small for the NBA, and he's not quick enough to play 3 or strong enough to play 5. He's got decent post moves, he passes well, and he's a good team player with a high basketball IQ. He's mentally tough.
He looks like a solid contributor on the NBA level. He does not look like an All-Star.
-

I think if the Spurs decide they don't want to bring Scola in this summer, they trade him. He wants to play in the NBA now, and they'll accomodate his wishes.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I think Spurs fans tend to fall in love with players too soon (and unfortunately hate on those who really contribute too soon as well).
People have been starting to assume that Scola is going to be "another Manu", for example. Man, that's not a given at all.

i remember certain SpursFans always waiting for the next big trade, and screaming no limits, and everything like that. now when we have it, kinda, and every jo-blow wants on the buss... its easy for some people to fall in love with trade rumors.
i dont think scola will be another manu. i just think he can be pretty damn good for what we need. energy/scoring off the bench. take pressure off of duncan and horry (mins wise) what i DO think we really really really need is a SF.
SAR is someone i've liked forever. i always thought he'd be a good fit here. so if that comes... i'll be happy. i just dont think people should bash on scola, especially if he's not gonna end up here.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
Just as with trade rumors, you should be skeptical of the alleged prowess of players who've yet to make it in the NBA. Sure, some do live up to the hype, but far too often they don't.

But MB, don't you realize that ALL players from Argentina are just like Manu, regardless of position or skill set? It's in the water down there, I think.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I do not think Scola is another manu---there might not be any more manus around---but I think Scola will inject energy to the team off the bench, will excite the fans with his hustle and his will to win. He could be a solid contributor off the bench. Not manu, not an allstar. Just solid bench player and another fan favorite.
SAR is a more skilled player, at this time. and a trade for him would probably not be turned down. I just wonder if SAR would have the proper attitude if he winds up as a Spur bench player when he is used to being a starter.
I am pretty sure that Scola, if he were to make it to the Spurs, would accept his bench role with the proper attitude, like manu did in 2003.

It was on the Pop show. Not sure what day it was. WOAI reported his comments too.
what he is, is a very, very heady player. He's probably the best forward in Europe right now,” Pop told us. “He's more like Malik than he is like Robert Horry. Although, he's a decent mid-range shooter. What he is is a worker, a rebounder, great hands. He can score under the bucket at about 6’9”. He's like Manu. He knows how to play. He knows how to win.”

Since Marbury Injures Oberto he played like a Starter and was a starter in the Final Game

Emanuel GINOBILI was the MVP of the Men’s competition, scoring among others perhaps the most heartbreaking basket of the Tournament, a fallaway jumper at the buzzer that gave Argentina the win in their premiere against defending World Champions Serbia/Montenegro. The latter, playing without NBA stars like Predrag STOJAKOVIC, Vlade DIVAC and Zeljko REBRACA ended up as the big disappointment of the Tournament. The Balkan outfit lost three games with margins ranging from one to three points, finally edging Angola, the only winless team in Men’s competition (Korea going through the same ordeal in Women), for 11th place.
GINOBILI’s team, Argentina, won the gold medal featuring the Men’s Tournament’s most accurate player from the field (Luis SCOLA, 65.5%) and from two-point land (GINOBILI, 70.8%), while Michail KAKIOUZIS of Greece was the most efficient in three-pointers (62.5%).

Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
I may be off base here, but I've always thought of Scola as a Corliss Williamson-type with some possible added intangibles. Corliss gives good teams 11 pts and 4 rebounds off the bench pretty consistently, shooting around 50%. I feel we could expect similar numbers from Scola, but I'm open to others' opinions.
What would you expect from Scola in 20-25 mpg for the Spurs?
Question.
-
Re: How Bad Do We Want Scola?
i would expect him to be a better passer than corliss... even in his first year. other than that, it depends how they use him. if there are no other 4's traded for... allstars or whatever... i'd expect this guy to have some rough games at first, but be pretty effective scoring. if he takes over alot of horry's mins in the regular season 8pts 6rebs isnt too much to expect. he's used to being a scoring option, so without that, he'll probably have alot of time/energy to get easier boards.
