_Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I remember reading post after post about why did Pop get Horry, and I remember when he had 4 points a game how many in here wanted him gone.
Funny how a few 3 point baskets at the right time changes all that. I hope you guys keep that in mind next time you question Pop and the Spurs on who they get this summer.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Theres pleanty of skeletons in the closet in terms of horry love hate at the start of this very season....
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
i started to love Robert Horry the moment he missed that 3 pointer against the Spurs in game 5 2003. Ironically the same exact 3 pointer that he made in game 5 against Detroit in the same exact spot.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I never hated Horry. Even when he was on the Lakers. I just felt bad for him being on such an a**hole team. Of course I hated when he made good shots against us. But I never felt like he belonged on the Lakers.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I hated him when he got Dave in the nuts.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Never actually hated him...did have some dislike for him when he played for the Lakers. I always liked him when he was at Houston. I think the reason I didn't care for him when he played for the Lakers is just the taint of being a Lake-uh. I was afraid he'd go "hollywood" like the rest of those bozos. He didn't, though, and that became evident when he came to the Spurs. I have liked him since the day he signed on, but I have to admit my admiration grew considerably this season.
I had a mild disdain for Steve Kerr, too, when he first came to the Spurs, because he used to be a Bull, and that was my second-most-hated team for years. I got over that, too, and Stevie became one of my favorites (long before he started hitting 3-pointers in the playoffs). Didn't care for Steve Smith, either, because he was a Trailgangsta; got over that, too, and I still follow his career to this day.
I don't think it's out of the ordinary to gain respect and affection for players you don't know as you get to know them better. I think it's only human. And, I think to question that, or condemn it, is silly and trivial.
As for doubting or questioning Pop and his decisions, I may not like everything he does, and I may not agree with all of it. But, I never question his motives; I KNOW (without a shadow of a doubt) that he is doing what he believes in his gut is right for, and in the best interest of, the team. And, DANG, if it doesn't work out to BE the best thing for the team about 98%of the time (even HE admits he's made a couple of miscalculations, but that's how you learn).

I got over all the shots he made against the Spurs when it became public knowledge that Horry was given his walking papers from the Lakers. I knew right then that we had to get this guy.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I couldn't stand him when he was a Rocket or Laker. Now I freaking love the guy thanks to the Father's Day Game 5 Bomb. Plus I met him at a homeowner's association and he seems to be a cool cat.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
i remember the hate. i think i would have remembered it VERY well had he gone to miami.
it took me til the beginning of his 2nd season here for me to let it go....big shots or not, he hustles and he'd dive for loose balls, and blocked some big shots for us. that shows desire and heart and it's hard not to like that when they do it for the team you root for...
he's a spur now. i hope he gets #7 and #8 here.

EXACTLY! I hated what he was doing (when it was against the Spurs), but I loved the way he did it (hand of the devil and all). He was magnificent in a horrible way (when he was executing against the Spurs - against anyone else, I didn't care). Kind of like a car wreck...you can't help but look, even when you cover your eyes, you have to watch him between your fingers, LOL.
And, I realize now, that Horry was NEVER comfortable when he was playing for the Lakers. I read all that crap on here yesterday about him being Shaq's bitch (bullshit!)...what a bunch of horse puckey. He always struck me as a "fish out of water" when he was out there. Now I know what I was seeing, he just didn't like it. He's made too many remarks lately about being "on a real team now" for me to think he liked being a Laker, that is NOT a team, it's a gang (and even Shaq knows that, now).
I thought the same thing when the Lakers let him go. How stupid do you think Jerry Buss feels NOW?

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Good to see many here man up , and say what they really said back when they said it,
after all at one time when I was a Spurs fan I said I wanted Pop gone also.
To this day I can't seem to find anyone else who will admit they wanted Pop gone at one time or another,
Anyone here remember when many wanted David Robinson off the team?
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I never hated Horry until his last 2 years with the Lakers...
I wanted him on my team for just about his entire career...
I started to dislike him at the end of his Laker Run because of 2 things...and they had nothing to do with his clutchness, which I always admired...
In the 02 playoffs he shoved Tony in the back under the basket when Tony was running full speed at the basket...it was kind of a cheap shot on a rookie and the only one I had ever seen him take up to that point in his career.
In the 03 playoffs he pissed me off when he hit Drob in the nuts...but I think that probably was on accident. Drob seemed to get over it pretty quickly.
None of those things were big deals though...I always loved his clutchness and covted it for my team...I was very happy when the Spurs signed him originally.
He's not like Malone...he's never been the dickhead or thug that Malone was...all he did was beat you with gutsy shots and plays...how can you hate that?
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
mouse, I wanted Pop gone, along with most of San Antonio, back in 1999 when the Spurs started slowly and Pop was seemingly unaccountable to the public for the Spurs' lackluster start to that lockout-shortened season. I called the Charlie Parker show and ranted about it on the air.
Now, three championships later, many fans appreciate Pop's at times sarcastic demeanor. I also criticized Pop heavily after the Lakers pounded the seemingly unmotivated Spurs in the 2001 Western Conference Semis. To me, it seemed he could not motivate his team. Two titles later, I guess you just have to say the Lakers were that great!
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I have already posted my mea culpa regarding my hypocritcal stance on Robert Horry.
I hated his guts before he signed with the Spurs. Now I love him, absolutely love him! Finding out that he was humble and loved toplay basketball was icing on the cake. Finding out he re-signed because he loves the Spurs organization is even better.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Of course we hated him he was a Laker. Now he is certified Spur and we love him. I also agree with big Zak it took a while for the hate to go away at first.

If I had ever said I wanted Pop gone, I would admit it. Actually, I may have said it once during the first season he coached here, but I never said it here. But, since I'm a relative newbie here, I know you aren't talking to me.

Yep, I wanted him gone every time he acted like a big baby girl the last couple of seasons he played...and every time he left his brain at home when he came to a game...every time Tim Duncan was dragging his ass up and down the court in the finals in 2003...right up until the time he was standing there with the best biceps in the NBA (at the time) holding up the trophy and flashing that million dollar smile...yep...quite a few times I wanted him gone, right up 'til that moment. :rolleyes

I never hated Horry. I hated all the damn Lakers except Horry and Fisher.

pale face spur fans turn thier pale face backs on avery johnson, him little general him make tonto proud still.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
He's to cute and talented to be hated. He did make me sick when helped eliminate us though. You know the kinda guy you'd like to have on your team. Thank God we get to keep him a few more years. Don't be a hater!!!! Life's too short.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
never wanted Pop gone, I have always loved defensive minded coaches
only hated Robert when he played for the Rockets in 95
only disliked Robert when he sucked ass against Lakers in 04 playoffs
always thought Phil burnt out Horry during 03 season, but never understood why Horry faded in 04
I really liked the idea of Robert being a Spur when he signed with us back in 03 (even though my wife hated him as a Laker).
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I apologize to Horry for hating him but I love him now.

Not me. I still love Avery. I felt worse when they let Avery go than I did when they traded Malik (and that's BAD). I will always love Avery and what he did for this team (more than just on the court). He's a true leader and I wish him well (but not his team :oops ). I hope he gets the respect in the league he deserves as a coach and a leader.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I hated him even last season when he stunk it up against the Lakers. Him and Turkaglu were on my shitlist. I got over that at the start of this season and now he is a valuable part of the team. Turkaglu will never leave my shitlist. Never.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I never hated Horry. I felt a certain animosity towards him whenever he played against us, just as I do for any other player who has burned the Spurs on occasion, but that's to be expected.
I did, however, mock the hell out of him after he missed that shot in the '03 Semis and then threw his little tantrum on the court. Which I feel bad for now. He made up for that one. ;)
People threw the traitor label on him last year after the Lakers debacle happened, which I find completely unjustified. Sometimes, you just can't make yourself play well. This is even more likely to happen in a high-pressure situation, such as against your old team in the Playoffs.
We saw the same thing happen to Brent Barry this year, but we were fortunate enough to get past Seattle, or now everyone would want his head on the chopping block, too.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
While I don't hate any player...I harbored serious dislike for Horry when he played for Houston and buried those shots against the Spurs in the 95 WCF....but I have always subscribed to the belief that once you put on the Spur....all of your past sins are forgiven! :)

yes he was cant be faded and my own most hated player
besides kobe
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
The only players I dislike are Shaq and Kobe, and both for reasons that extend beyond the basketball court.
Players are supposed to try to beat other teams. That is what basketball is all about. You can't hate them for that.
Ray Allen is a whiny little bitch sometimes, too, but he already got his. :lmao

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I didn't hate him in terms of wishing him herpes from a hooker or that a house would fall on his mother or anything like that. I hated him the way I 'hate' Derek Fisher - I hate his shot and what it did, and I wouldn't ask for his autograph if I saw him on the street and I mock him whenever we play.
But how can one hate Robert Horry? He was too cute when he was piggy backing on Duncan in the 99 championship SI issue.
And that 'hate' stopped the second I heard he signed with us.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I hated Horry when he was a Rocket and a Laker.
I hated the way he played against the Lakers in the '04 playoffs. It seemed like such an obvious tank job because he had an incredible series against the Grizzlies. That three pointer he missed in the 4th Qtr in game five wasn't even close. He stated that he was trying too hard against the Lakers. But I wish he said that right after we were eliminated. Then I wouldn't have believed the rumors about him celebrating with the Lakers after game six. I hated him the entire summer of '04 for that.
When he was brought back, I didn't know how to feel about it. But with the breakup of the Lakers, maybe the "trying too hard" scenario was dead. I was kinda of worried that if we played the Heat, he might "try too hard" against Shaq.
Bottom line was that I felt Horry owed the Spurs some clutch shooting in the playoffs for his '04 performance against the Lakers. And he did exactly that. He paid back San Antonio, huge. I no longer have any ill feelings toward him because he has paid his debt.
Personally, capturing the title this season gives me a restored faith in the world. Things do happen for a reason, but with hard work and perserverance, things usually workout in the end.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Technically, Horry helped us win two championships with a made and a missed three :lol. I don't think that I will ever really like Robert Horry, but I have tremendous respect for him as a player and his composure in crunch time. He definatly had a tremendous impact on this year's championship run and I'm glad that he resigned with the Spurs.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
I probably didn't like Horry as a person because he was a laker...
but as a player, I always knew he could contribute.

My sentiments exactly! I hated him during those times (even after last years playoffs). I love him now.
I often wondered if he was really happy during those six years in LA. With all the drama and the allegations of selfishness, Rob just seemed like a "fish out of water".

I've never hated Horry as I've been a Horry fan since his days with the Rockets.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
So him coming to the Spurs was a dream come true for me and i'm glad hes staying for 3 more years and then he retires.

Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Couldn't agree more. This guy is the bomb shit! And seemingly a good person who has fit very well into the Spurs organization and their team culture
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Come on Timvp I want you to man up to the "He (Horry) isn't clutch anymore" statement. :)
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
Horry himself said he felt team camraderie(sp?) and trust for one another and only metioned Houston and S.A. as examples. Horry just wants to win, fuck the spotlight. Although It comes with being a champion. Dude got big nuts, big nuts, just like Tony said. He gives you his all and it took him a full year to really find his niche in the Spurs offense and defense. Now you see him bailing Tim out, talking to Tony after airballing jumpers in Game 7 and all season he's been getting back and just throwing people's shit on turnovers when going for layups on the other end. Horry will retire a SPUR with rings number 7 and 8. He aint through, he'll find a way to contribute. I mean who really thought he'd fly in and dunk on Rip like he did? Respect.
-
Re: _Anyone here remember when you hated Robert Horry?_
There were likes 5 minutes or so when I really hated Robert Horry. It was Game 3 of the 2001 NBA Finals and Big Shot Rob scored 12 4th quarter points, including a 3 from the baseline with 46 secs left after the fat man had fouled out.
The Sixers have been nowhere near the NBA title since.
But I've always maintained a respect for the way he can make big shots in crunch time. You hate it when it happens to your team, but you got to wonder how he manages to do it. He's amazing in that respect.

Nice find. I probably had five posts when that was written and I still don't have that many now. But I don't doubt that I hated his guts. I was one of the first few people that started using the double-agent tagline for him. Somewhere is the archives is an extended rant about him from me. But my perception at the time was that he was playing decently enought to steal minutes from Malik and with Malik out of the rotation, he tanked the Lakers series. Just to aid in the conspiracy is that it was his old team.
Then I moved to the idea that he just didn't have anything left in the tank. I agreed with timvp that the clutchness was gone. But obviously I was wrong.
To echo BigZak's comment, it wasn't until halfway through this season that I saw the light. The guy just wants to win. I'll buy that he wanted to bury the Lakers so badly that he wound up doing the opposite. But this year, it was obvious that he just knows what he needs to do to get the W. And after his performance in the playoffs, I'm glad he's going to retire as a Spur.

I'm just now reading this thread.
Yeah, he went a good year without hitting clutch shots. Make that two years since he went like 3-50 with the Lakers in 2003 from downtown in the playoffs.
But he bounced back in 2005 with the most clutch performance ever. I've always liked Horry, even when he was hitting big shots against the Spurs.
I'll apologize for calling him out for not being clutch and for Pop to stop playing him in the fourth quarters, but that was regular season Robert Horry I was calling out. When Playoff Bob shows up, he's a whole new person.
And last playoffs, he probably had the biggest part ever in a championship run for a guy who didn't even average 10 points a game.
If it makes you feel better, I proposed the name Horry Ellis to Kori as the name of our first born. For real.
:smokin
