Is anyone besides me a little disturbed by the fact that Tim Duncan is the only man on this year's Spurs' roster who was present for all three championship runs?
I wish Pop and company would stop trading the team away and give this group a chance to actually repeat.
Is that really too much to ask?
Relax. Most of our core players are signed for the nextseveral years. And all teams make a few changes in the offseason if it gives them a chance to become better.
Who are they trading that mattered?
Keep in mind that if they hadn't made changes to the roster, Manu wouldn't be here and Tony wouldn't be here. So not all changes are badQuote:

You do what you gotta do to win, Angel. Some players got old, some outlived their usefulness. Look at the bright side. The front office was able to get quality players to put around Tim and David (then just Tim) and keep the team at a contending level. Well, Manu was drafted in 1999...no real replacement there. Tony pretty much was the replacement for AJ... but who says the Spurs pass on him otherwise?
Okay. Leave me Timmy, Rasho, Beno, Gino, Bruce, Robert, Brent Barry, and Devin Brown. Then trade the rest, if you must. = )

I mentioned 1999 to establish that the Spurs franchise has a habit of not keeping people. Who knows how many 1999 people that are still in the league were with us for both championships?
Both being 1999 and 2003.
Well there were 4 years between 1999 and 2003 and the 1999 team was already old - that's the reason there weren't a lot of holdovers.
The core of the 2005-06 Spurs will be very similar to the 2004-05 Spurs because they are relatively young.

Yeah, 1999 really bolsters your case. To answer your question, of the five players from the '99 team who were still in the league in '03, four won another championship with the Spurs. The only one to go was AD, and that was at his own request because he didn't want to play PG.

We must have scrapped a lot of guys after the 2003 championship for Timmy to be the only surviver. I know David Robinson and Danny Ferry retired. Where did the rest go?

I feel your pain Angel....but as with the Malik trade, it was for the betterment of the team, so if you want to continue to win championships, you have to accept the fact that this is a business, and every good business has to make decisions that are sometimes not pleasing to everyone in order to prosper.

This is a non-issue. Compare the 1980 Lakers to the 1985 Lakers and the only holdovers are Magic and Kareem.

It's not "Kersey for Rahim"...but it's close.
We already have the core group intact. Duncan, Ginobilli, Parker are all signed to long term deals. That means that this team will contend for the championship every year for a long while. I rather win championships than worry if a role player is traded to improve the team.Quote:

I also usually feel really sad when players get traded away and it takes me a while to get used to new players. Actually, I couldn't be a Spurs fan if a player like Kobe came to the Spurs. Actualy, bash me if you will, but I am not very comfortable about any other superstar joining the Spurs. But I don't have a problem with a minor trimming of the roster.

Only player that I wish we still had was Stephen Jackson. But he made the bonehead decicision to pass on the Spurs initial offer in '03. Moneywise, it worked out in the end for him. But if we kept him instead of bringing in Hedo, I think we beat the Lakers and win the title, back to back.
I do know I don't miss Turkeyglue or "Herpes" Smith at all.

I'm sorry, but Manu wasn't developed by Pop! He might have improved his defensive skills I'll give you that, 'cause in Pop's system everyone does, but if anything Pop was the one that had to adjust to Manu's crazy ways. I know Manu has learned to be less chaotic because of Pop, but I really don't think he would have been end of bench for any team or any coach. i know Larry is tough on rookies but I also think he's a guy that can tell real talent when he sees it.Quote:
