Do We Really Want to Sweep?
We're up 3-0, so let's just "assume" we go the Finals.
If we sweep these guys, that would not only give us a 6 game winning streak, it would give us a looong time off before we'd play in the Finals.. I don't really know if I want that. We could use the rest though. Just hate the rust factor. Thoughts?
**Depending on the length of the ECF, it would probably be 7-9 days.
The main reason I asked is cause I remember last year Pop saying that he hates winning streaks, especially in the playoffs. Obv he won't throw a game, but the question was if you guys would rather sweep.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Less games, less chance of injury. So, yes.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Yes for the sake of Kawhi's knee
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
I read somewhere it would be 9 days between games

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
I want a spurs sweep. Let the pacers and the heat beat the hell out of each other while the spurs get rest.

It's a no brainer. Put them out of their misery.

Yes. You don't fuck around in the playoffs. You close out as soon as possible.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
I would love for Pacers/Heat to beat the shit out of each other while our aging trio rests up. I see your point but I wouldn't take anything for granted. Finish them and get to the finals.

Yes they will lose on purpose.
Shut up faggot

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Fuck yes. More play = higher chance of injury. Yeah, it's a long time off. Yeah, they could look rusty. You can shake off rust and you can do things to prevent rust. But they need rest. They need to heal. They need to watch a fuck of a lot of game footage and have a gameplan.
Do I think they'll sweep? I don't know. But I sure as fuck hope so.

yes - Our big 3 are not getting any younger and Leonard's knee needs some rest.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
id rather be rested and come out cold then be exhausted and come out sluggish against the heat...at least with rested legs our d wont struggle

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Um yeah, I want to see the Spurs win this series, so yeah, I'd love the sweep. Plenty of teams have come back from 3-1.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
OP no disrespect but you sound like a pussy.
Sweep these grizz and get the rest. last year Spurs were on a 20 game WS. Its not the same.
Spurs big 3 rested a game in Nov. The can you use the rest now.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Absolutely, yes. Imo, it will erase any shit talking from the flukey series win the Grizz got in 2011.
Sweeping now imo proves that they only won because our team was hurt (Duncan, Parker, and Manu were all hurt). Now an even older Duncan is destroying prime ZBo, Parker is taking a hot shit on them even though Conley is allegedly the best defensive PG in the league thi syear, and severely declined Manu out hustled them all night.
On a strategic note, it'd give the Spurs ample time to prepare for the winning team. yeah they may be rusty for game 1, but who cares? Huge strategic edge, and 100% rest and health.

Yeaaa you right. No offense taken. In hindsight that does sound kinda pussy-ish. Let's bust out the brooms on em.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
We want a sweep. A lot of nagging injuries could recover with a long rest. Plus, you don't want to give the Grizzlies even a glimmer of hope. They've overcome a 2-0 deficit in these playoffs already, it is not out of the realm of possibility that they could overcome a 3-0 deficit as well. We all know it is not impossible for this team to lose 4 games in a row. The Spurs take care of business when up 3-0, though. They've won game 4 in that situation 7 times out of 10, and have never been pushed past game 5.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Yes, Spurs should obviously try to win game 4. Grizzlies are too good of a team to gift them one game.
Now, Pop shouldn't play too much Tony and Tim in that game to have them ready for a potential game 5.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
well if the Spurs end of facing Miami in the finals then it will be ok. Spurs should be expected to lose the first game against them. Giving them plenty of time to recover. Should we face the Pacers, then it might be different story.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
I say the Spurs tank the next 3 then try to win game 7. This would keep them in game shape and would prevent any sort of rust in game 1 of the finals.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Yes, I want the sweep. Every game played means a chance of injury. No team has ever come back from a 0-3 deficit in the Conference Finals, but I certainly don't want the Grizzlies to be the first because of some injury. Don't let them hang around, kill them quickly!

But on the other hand, I'm expecting for the Spurs to lose game 4 and win it here in San Antonio.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
You want Pop to rest the starters next game? Build the Grizzlies confidence?
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Answer is obvious. This old team needs rest in every way possible. Just don't want to get overconfident that we could beat them the next game.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Yes, you go for the sweep, but I won't be angry if the Grizz win Game 4, tbh.

if spurs get down big you let the scrubs get them back then bring the big three back
otherwise you go for the win at the bigging
role players will play better in a game 5 at home

No I stated that Pop obv isn't going to throw the game.. This was a question for the fans, and whether or not they would rather go into next round on a 6-game winning streak and 8 or 9 days of rest.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Heat don't get past the Pacers and I'm not sure how to feel about that tbh. But if it's the Pacers that take them down then so be it. I just want to see them lose and if we earn a shot to beat them, all the better. Still need 1 more. Finish it !!!

Really? I would be SHOCKED if the Heat didn't get passed the Pacers.. which is why I'm about 90% sure they're still going to. If Indy had finished Game 1, I'd say they have a pretty good shot. But that loss will come back to bite them in the ass when they lose one of the next two at home, if not both. I think they just awoke Lebron tbh.
But in response to the second part of your statement, the spurs would absolutely rather play Indiana than Miami.. both would be tough, but the Heat are just a bad match up for us.

Not that I'm insinuating you gift any team any game in the playoffs, but, they are? I continue to be amazed at how overrated this Grizzlies team is.
And this isn't me getting swept up in the moment, either. I haven't been concerned with this team for going on 2 years now. My concerns going into this series were all Spurs related (Parker's/Leonard's health, the likelihood that it would be every other day, Spurs recent penchant for choking in the playoffs). Once I found out the first one was essentially a non issue and that there would be a 3 day break between games 2 and 3, I was confident they'd win in 5.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Fewer opportunities for injury, fatigue, etc. More opportunity for Parker's calf to stop pestering him, for Duncan and Kawhi to rest their knees, more rest and healing in general. Rust is a matter of fan perception. Finish off these upstart bearpeople and silence 2011ers for good.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Memphis busy getting their fishing rods together. Luckily they already have a Leur.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
rust isn't as big of a deal if you don't have homecourt. You have less pressure to win the first two.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
You know your team is playing well when the fans are worried about, of all things, the implications of a sweep victory in the conference finals.
To answer the OP: Of course we want a sweep. The 2004 ALCS is a statistical anomaly in pro sports for sure (in that instance, baseball), but I don't want to leave any equivalent chance of a collapse like that happening to the Spurs.

"Can't believe Grizzlies are shooting this good!" - they're shooting 39%
"Tony Allen is killing us with all these jumpers" - Allen has made 1 jumper and missed 3
etc, etc. Dude is a disaster. But you're worse, at least for now. Sleep well!

The Spurs stated after Game 2 that their mindset in the series was that they were down 0-2. Pop is the last person I can imagine who would suddenly view this series as being over, or Game 4 as a done deal and Game 5 a high possibility. He has the proverbial foot on the Grizzlies' throats, the last thing he should do is let off the accelerator.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
One small crack in a dam can cause a flood to end up smashing through.
I don't want any let up. I want the Spurs to sweep. A 3-1 series lead can easily turn into a 3-2 lead, and then suddenly it could be a possible 3-3 situation.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Yes. The Spurs want to have time to go over every loss by the Heat, break down every play they struggled with, find every weakness of each player so they know exactly who and when to double, who to leave, what plays to run on inbounds, out of timeouts, and at the end of quarters.
And if the Pacers win, then the Spurs can start planning the parade.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Ah, the age old argument - rest vs rust?
It's really a no-brainer.
Take the sweep, get the rest, allow the bodies to heal, recharge the batteries and get prepared for the next opponent. If there is any rust, they'll probably need about a quarter to get focused. However, given the fact that it's been six years since this team has been in the Finals, I expect the Big Three to be fully locked in and focused from the tiopoff. They know what's at stake.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
In 1999, the Spurs were playing the Timberwolves and won the first two games. It was best-of-five back then, and I remember a reporter asking David Robinson if they were thinking sweep. His answer was something like, "No, no, we're not thinking sweep at all. No way." I remember thinking, "Well why the hell aren't you thinking sweep??"
It wasn't all that surprising when they came out flat and lost game 3. Seemed like David was trying to keep from insulting his opponent. I like it a lot better when I hear Timmy say "You can't give a good team a chance, you have to do everything you can to beat them or they'll make you pay."
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
As some have also stated, the additional benefit from a sweep is it gives the coaching staff additional time needed to fully breakdown film and game plan for either opponent.

Wolves actually won Game 2 (and stole HCA in the process, not that it mattered as much for a best of 5 series)

Maybe he means 2001? Elie rubbed off alot on the team in 99....I think David went back to being mostly nice by 2001.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
Would love to see the sweep for all of the above reasons (Agree FULLY), but would also like to see them take the Western Conference title at home and watch the crowd go nuts. I have tickets for the entire run and there's nothing quite like being at the AT&T Center when it's a huge win.

Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
This is ridiculous. This is not the regular season where Popovich will tank the occasional game for whatever well thought out strategic reason. This is the EFFING PLAYOFFS. The goal is one and only thing: get to 16. Every game you don't win keeps you one short of that goal.
-
Re: Do We Really Want to Sweep?
When leading 3-0. any game that you don't win next simply opens the door to a potential defeat in 7 games.
