Someone Convince Me ...
... that Tim Duncan not having a DPOY to his name is the biggest fvckin' bullsh!t in all of sporting history.
Fat Gasol was the DPOY? Duncan just anchored a defense that played the best defensive series in a conference finals since -- maybe ever.
WTF.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Is this a rhetorical "convince me", kind of like your Grizz should be favored one?
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Well, if the voting for DPOY actually was done by people who know shit Bowen might have actually got one. Gasol over Duncan isn't nearly as bad as those Camby over Bowen awards.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
No need. It IS the biggest travesty in the NBA. Well, that and .4 and maybe that LA/SAC game 6 in 2002 . . .
Nah, Duncan being robbed seals it.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
All NBA 2nd Team Defense Marc Gasol to be exact tbh.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
How much deer antler spray do you think Duncan's been taking this season
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
It has a lot to do with the lack (understatement) of perimeter shooters of Memphis.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Duncan gets the last laugh.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Yeah..convince me as well.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Also Duncan needs to get divorced more often
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
People are mostly gullible and are for the most part content with shinny things.
Spurs Bb is the best brand of Bb. Its the chess of bb
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
You're not allowed to have basketball takes for the rest of the playoffs.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
but... but... duncan's influence on defense can't be quantified.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Justice was served with the All-NBA teams. DPOY is pretty much a bullshit award at this point.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
he took some days off tbqh
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
If TD not getting DPOY and AD 1st team is the price to pay for the Spurs winning it all, I'll be damn sure TD will gladly pay up.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
I try not to let it bother me. Duncan's career has hit a stratosphere where it really just becomes trivial... He'll be known as a dominant defensive player and the greatest PF of all time. Some day people will talk about Duncan and part of the conversation will go, "Did you know he never won DPOY?" "No way, that's surprising." "It's true." "Bullshit." "No dude I'm serious, Google it."
I agree with Manny that Bowen losing it is a far bigger travesty. Both for who he lost to, and because it would have meant a lot more for his legacy.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Tim Duncan is by far the best defensive player in NBA history to not win a DPOY since it's inception, and it's not even remotely close.
Tim Duncan is 2nd all time in career defensive rating (0.07 away from first, and he's only just 2nd because it's slipped down some as his career's gone WELL into his late 30s), and he will also be 2nd in defensive win shares by far above everyone else by time his career's done. He will blow past everyone besides Bill Russell early next year in that too.
It's a huge joke Duncan doesn't have a DPOY. I think it's even more annoying now because Marc Gasol won it when Duncan was clearly better defensively this season.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
I know the Grizzlies don't have a great offense but the Spurs just made them look bottom of the league for 4 games. That's after unleashing damn good D in the final 3 games of the Warriors series

WTF.
The best argument against him is that while Duncan has been better per minute defensively, Gasol played like 700 more minutes during the season and there is value to that. Spurs have won games with just great offense on some games when Duncan's not moving great, or hell they've won games without him playing, period. If fat Gasol doesn't play 35+ minutes of good D every night though Grizz can't beat anybody. Just not enough firepower.

Short memory huh?
What about 1999?
And yup Timmy not having at least one DPOTY is a disgrace to the sport

It will be rather. He was good but his resume says he was not dpoty once, so he was not that gr8 defensive force

Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Gasol won due to minutes, it was a fair choice..
However, as I've said all year, he's the most overrated big man in the NBA and it probably isn't close, tbh..
Duncan is the best big man in the league, though..pretty amazing that he looked like a role player in the 2 or 3 previous seasons..
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
The media voting is just a joke in the NBA.. Tim has made a million all defense teams yet guys that can't say that have won DPOY over him..
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
DPOY's been dead to me for years. Fuck that award. Timmy's too good for it.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Duncan not winning DPOY is sort of like Jerry Sloan never winning COY.
This year has only been the second-biggest joke. The biggest was Marcus Camby winning over Tim in 2007.
Doesn't matter, except some doofus (Bill Simmons) is likely going to continue to insist that Kevin Garnett was a better defensive player.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
To be fair, a lot of the Marc for DPOY was based around providing A- defense for a lot more minutes being more value than A level defense for a shorter period of time. People generally weren't saying Marc is the best defensive player in the league.
It's still ridiculous that he's never won. Probably because it's not a shock for him not to make mistakes, and, voters are DUMB. People had Serge Ibaka ahead of him, which is incredibly stupid.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Duncan will gladly take a NBA championship over the DPOY any day.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
Marc Gasol played fantastic defense in this series and completely neutralized Timmy in iso situations. He's a great defensive player and he deserved the award, but I think that Timmy deserved it too. I think Timmy coming in 6th was just ridiculous, and it goes to show just how overlooked he is by the sports media. How about the fact that neither guy made the 1st team but Ch :lol ndler did? Ridiculous.

the 2013 DPOY CAN'T EVEN STOP A 37-YR OLD DUNCAN????
give me a break :lol

The defense was good no doubt but the Grizzlies lack of an offensive game outside of Gasol/Randolph. They're a very flawed team that relies on the other team turning the ball over on offense.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
The Spurs carved them up considering Memphis is one of the top defensive teams. Backdoor cuts for layups. Pullup jumpers. Pick-n-roll. Pick-n-pop. And the Hammer! The Spurs offense looked like the offense that was rolling through the league onto 20 consecutive wins. Lots of motion, slick passes all the way around. The difference is this year they brought the defense to match. Incredible!

Gasol shut Timmy Down in one-on-one situations (although rare) all series long, and his length really bothered Timmy. Gasol played fairly well in this series, especially defensively.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
I don't want Tim Duncan winning that award anymore. Would tarnish his legacy IMO
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
I've always said that, in terms of awards, it's the greatest travesty in the history of sports. It's beyond laughable that the guy who's had the longest sustained impact defensively since Russell (and no disrespect to him, but look at the era he did it in) doesn't have not just one, but a handful.
And the whole minutes argument for Gasol is nonsense. I'd buy that if Duncan were a 20 mpg player, but we're talking about a 30 mpg starter. Rewards should be about rewarding excellence, not very good.
-
Re: Someone Convince Me ...
It is clear and has been clearer that TD is the best defensive player in the league this season.
I guess that the only two reasons he didn't win this time were the lack of his playing time (30 minutes per game) and the relatively small number of games he played (69 games).
Had he played 33 something minutes and played 74~75 games, he would have easily won it.

The offense is also less predictable this year.
