This, right here, is why I quit watching the NBA. And it just made me decide that I'm not watching it next year, either. It's also the reason why we'll be playing the Heat in the Finals, and why we have very little chance of winning it all this time. Anybody who says that the league isn't biased is deluding themselves.
If you're not watching Game 5 of the ECF, watch the Youtube video below. Birdman took a cheap shot on Hansbrough, then turned around and escalated things by getting in Hansbrough's face, and then shoved the shit out of him. Just a few days ago, Nazr Mohammed shoved LeBron EXACTLY the same way, and he got ejected for it. And Nazr didn't commit the cheap shot first, either. Instead of ejecting Birdman, this play wound up with a double technical call on Birdman AND Hansbrough. We can argue about blocks/charges, or any other judgment calls, forever. But there's no debate about this call. When someone does it to Miami, it's an ejection. When Miami does it to someone else, it's just a tech, and the other team gets one too.
The Pacers were still up by 4 at the half, but the refs have taken over the third quarter, and the Heat players have that look on their faces, like they know the fix is in. Get ready to face the Heat, and the zebras, in the Finals. I'm going to follow the Spurs through the Finals, just because I have so much history. But after that, fuck the NBA.

Okay.. thats surely an ejection and surely the refs got it wrong.
But to say that this game was rigged against the Pacers aint right at all. Their defense was not upto mark in the 3rd quarter and less said of their offense, the better. George Hill had a bad game.. and his backup DJ Augustin should be actually playing alongside Johnny Flynn in Australia and not in the NBA. Such a pathetic backup!
The Pacers are a top-heavy team and if the Heat's backups get going like Haslem (and to an extent Norris Cole not to mention Ray Allen did), they generally are toast.
It is just a surprise as to how they are just 2-3 in the ECF playoffs so far.

Pretty much, the ref was right in front of the play, saw everything clear as day, chose to ignore it and give the ball back to MIA. Indiana was making a comeback up until that point, that one call changed the whole momentum of the game.

Re: F this entire F'ing league!
Once again, I don't really think this can be attributed to any bias. Pacers get a shit ton of calls, have all season.
What needs to happen is for the head honchos and officials to get their shit together: there is no sense of consistency in the officiating. Rough play is ignored, while ticky-tack fouls are called all the time. Lebron fouled out in game 4 on what was indeed a foul, but players get away with that kinda thing constantly.
In short, the refs seem clueless, not in on some conspiracy.

Well.. last year they had Danny Granger. This season, they did well in the regular season without him but it was always going to be difficult to beat the Heat on paper without their best scorer and no adequate backup for George, despite the latter's spectacular development.
Then, the Heat have improved from last year. They have diversified their offense, become a strong defensive squad in crucial minutes of their games and have also got better in their role player section with the addition of Ray Allen.
Taking all this on board, it is still a surprise that the Pacers are just behind 1 game after 5 games in the ECF.

Some can make the Rudy Gay comparison with Granger in that the Pacers win percentage improved without him and that Paul George wouldn't have developed nearly as quickly had Granger still been healthy.

Indiana has no offense other than George and Hibbert. Occassionally George Hill will contribute.
The Spurs will space the floor on Miami and cause trouble for them as well as be effective against Birdpoop and Haslem on the inside.
Lebron can do all his damage, the Spurs just need to make sure the other players (Bosh, Allen, Battier....oh, and Wade) are not big contributors.

Funny how everybody thinks offcials control games by the number of fouls when actually its more about timely fouls or missed calls, which kills a teams momentum. Basketball in the NBA is a streaky game.
Foul calls can be even at the end of the game, but the true art of favoritism occurs by calling a play for a particular team at a crucial point in the game or just when the other team is getting ready to make a run. Indiana gets as many or more calls than Miami, but Miami gets the better calls.

Officiating will be among the last of reason why the Spurs lose or even win. It'll come down to whether Wade is coasting or not. Birdman cheap-shotted Hansbrough. Then he turned back and got in his face. Then he gave that two-handed full-force shove, out in the open. And THEN he physically wrestled with a ref who was trying to separate them - that alone should have been an ejection and suspension of 1 game. And then, after the ref got him all the way back to the bench, he STILL kept the barking up, which normally would be more than enough by itself to get a second T called.
Forget everything else that happened. Just that wrestling match with the ref, and the continued barking afterwards, would have gotten any player on most teams booted from the game. My complaint has nothing to do with the Spurs - it's about the ridiculous inconsistency in the league. You want to defend something indefensible? Go right ahead and prove what a dumb shit you are. Every sports outlet in the country is going to agree with me tomorrow. And many, if not most, will be asking why Nazr got booted and Andersen didn't.

I didn't say they rigged anything against the Pacers. They let a player stay in the game, when any other time he would have been ejected. And then they got caught up with the crowd in the third, and changed the entire momentum of the game with some very inconsistent whistles.

The final straw for me last year, that made me say "enough"? It was the Pacers - Heat series in the second round. Nothing to do with the Spurs, or the Pacers, really. Just the fact that the refs absolutely fucked Indy out of two games with some unforgivable whistles. After that, Miami got Bosh back, and they were unstoppable in the Finals. But they never got that far on their own.
Last game, the refs "missed" that ball bouncing off the rim, and didn't re-set the shot clock for the Pacers. All three refs didn't see a ball hit the rim and bounce upwards? Sorry, not buying it. That doesn't mean they have to be intentionally throwing games to Miami. But they see things a certain way too often. Maybe it's just expectations, and they think the Pacers don't measure up, just like a lot of the people posting here. But that's why they play the game.
When I was in college, I worked for a couple of guys who owned an auto parts store. They used to wager on professional wrestling. I'm talking about hundreds of dollars on a single match, and multiple matches per night, on the fucking WWF. They were ignorant cocksuckers, sort of like you. (Why the fuck are you even here, instead of some Knicks forum?) There were too many calls in last year's series that I just couldn't pass off as bad luck for the Pacers (sort of like the missed shot clock call last game). There were a few other reasons that I finally had enough, and when the boring offseason comes around, I'll discuss some of them. But tonight, that ref wrestling Andersen back to his bench, and then letting him continue the barking like he did - he was way, way the fuck outside the norm for NBA officiating. And he wouldn't have handled it the same way if it wasn't Miami at home. He just wouldn't.

Re: F this entire F'ing league!
From NBA.com. BTW - recognize the ref? People here like him because he doesn't have such a hard-on for the Spurs. The Mavs are 1-16 in the playoffs when Dan Crawford is officiating. But, hey, I'm sure they probably just have an off night EVERY time he's on the floor.
So Andersen delivers two blows — both of which sure looked to be “unnecessary” and “excessive” — and yet, upon review, gets slapped only with a flagrant-1 foul. But the skirmish wasn’t over.
One of the referees, Davis, gets in front of Andersen and moves him backward away from Hansbrough to stop a possible escalation of the beef. What does Andersen do? He pushes back. He grabs Davis’ wrist with his right hand. He pushes on the referee’s arm with his left. All of this physical contact with a game official because he’s steamed, because he didn’t like getting bumped from behind or because, in some misguided way, he’s trying to ignite (incite?) his Heat teammates and/or the crowd at AmericanAirlines Arena.
That was the most disturbing thing about the incident. Andersen did enough to be ejected then — or, a little late, suspended now for one game — with his hits on Hansbrough. But he crossed the line by getting physical with Davis.
No way should any NBA referee be subject to that sort of wrestling or manhandling, lest people assume they’re just part of the act in Andersen’s dumb WWE display.

Re: F this entire F'ing league!
The NBA has terrible officials. The main goal of referees/umpires in any sport is to be CONSISTENT they way the rules are enforced. In baseball you want a consistent strike zone. in NFL you want pass interference called the same for both teams. That is what they are supposed to do so the players know what rules they are playing under. I think we can all agree that the NBA refs are the worst in any major sport, by far. It just makes no sense how they do what they do. When you watch college basketball they do a pretty good job of keeping things fair. Why does the NBA have to be such a joke on this issue?
After Tim Donaghy you can't really be surprised by anything, not to mention the congressional enquiry. But I think you have to remember that Donaghy was paid by GAMBLERS who were fixing games or other specific outcomes in games. Sometimes it was the over/under and Donaghy wasn't trying to determine who won the game, only the total score. To keep the score down, they put one of the best players in foul trouble early etc. Fans always think that Stern is fixing games for ratings, but Donaghy was involved with gamblers, and only tried to implicate Stern when he was desperate and trying to drag everyone down. All of the FBI investigation dealt with mafia and gambling interests that were influencing Donaghy and maybe others.
My point is that the NBA has shady refs, but you shouldn't assume Stern is behind it all. At any given moment a ref might be getting paid to influence the game in any direction. They might want one team to win game 5 in a series, and the other team the next game. Or they might be trying to slow down or speed up a game to influence the over/under. I think the NBA needs to re-vamp their whole officiating system and bring in independent review with credibility.

you gotta give Stern credit though, most commish's would've been toast, along with their leagues, if a ref was found fixing games for the mob, especially if the ref was rated highly like Donaghy. yet somehow Stern was able to spin it that Donaghy was a lone incident, just ratting out whoever to save face. to the OP's point, I don't think the league is rigged so much as it is biased. Rigged is a loaded word, and there's too many people involved with competing interests, but I do think the league doesn't give a shit about objectivity or consistency, it's biased towards the :greedy:greedy.
I will give him credit for that, but thats not necessarily a good thing for the commish to get credit for lol! It's all a business at the end of the day though. I remember a player this year coming out and saying Stern doesn't want the Spurs to win (Kaman?), so most know whats up. I agree at the last part too, dollar signs.

Foul calls can be even at the end of the game, but the true art of favoritism occurs by calling a play for a particular team at a crucial point in the game or just when the other team is getting ready to make a run. Indiana gets as many or more calls than Miami, but Miami gets the better calls.
This right here.
To the casual eye you might think oh well the refs are giving both sides calls..
But the ones with more impact are for the Heat.
Like this fukken suspension. Sure it's a nice make up call... after the fact.. that Anderson is suspended for games 6.
But if he got ejected, maybe Miami loses game 5 which is always pivotal... and games 6 is in Indiana for an elimination game.

+1
And even if they're not being payed off, theyre extremely inconsistent

So they suspended Andersen. There was never any question about that, and Stern really had no choice. What Stern needs to investigate is why he has referees who are so willing to abandon the rules, and the intent of the rules. If they really want to take a step to shore up their credibility, they can start by making sure that no one named Crawford officiates the rest of these playoffs. Everybody knows that Joey Crawford is a wildcard, and manages to inject himself into the results of far too many games. But Dan Crawford is another matter. His sloppy officiating seems to run in some specific directions.
Most people here probably know about Crawford and the Mavs. Dallas is 1-16 in playoff games officiated by Dan Crawford. During that same period, their winning percentage in game not officiated by Crawford is something like 63% (I don't have the game count handy). But they win about 2/3 of the time when Crawford isn't there, and about 1/16 of the time when he is there.
But not many people talk about his record officiating playoff games for Miami. Since 1994, the Heat are 13-3 in playoff games officiated by Dan Crawford, and 48-40 in all the playoff games not officiated by Crawford. (As of last season.) In other words, they have been about a .500 team without Dan Crawford, and almost unbeatable with him. And it gets even more incredible, when you look at their record vs. the spread during that period. (Those of you who know anything about basketball understand that beating the spread significantly, over a long period of time, just isn't done. Those who don't... show your ignorance and flame away.)
Put those two things together - the unlikely bad record Dallas has under him, plus the amazingly good record Miami has with him. It begins to strain logic pretty damned bad. Here's a pretty good article from ESPN (Truehoop) that details it pretty well. http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/mia...he-1-9-percent
As I said last night, Crawford's effort to try and get Andersen out of harm's way is highly unusual. But for him to allow Birdshit to wrestle with him, and then keep barking after they were separated? That's too much. NBA refs just don't put up with that shit. And Stern explicitly doesn't want them putting up with it. Dan Crawford volunteered for that assignment. I don't know that it matters why. What does matter is how often his bad officiating winds up going in specific directions.

Re: F this entire F'ing league!
im not happy with any of this. Being reactive doesn't make any sense as the game has already been played and won or lost. The decision on the floor has consequences that cannot be understated.
So they suspended Andersen for game 6, a game that Indiana can win, so the impact in theory is less than if he was to be suspended for a hypothetical game 7 in Miami.
What the league needs to do (if the refs are incapable as it seems) is to define clear rules - with videos and everything. I know it sounds silly, but if player X shoves player Y then you need to determine whether it could even be a F1, an ejection, or a simple foul. You can't have such disparity from one crew to another. It has game changing consequences.
Please NBA clean this shit up fast before the finals.
