@WojYahooNBA: As @SpearsNBAYahoo reports, Boris Diaw's opting back into the Spurs for $4.7M in '13-14. His agent, Doug Neustadt, says letter sent to team.
Say what you want but Im happy he did and its a fair value deal. I think if he gets in better shape could play 25mins/gm next yr...

Excellent news. He's always been one of our steadiest players throughout the regular season and playoffs. I don't think I've ever been angry or furious at Diaw for making an egregious mistake. On the other hand, he's blown me away a number of times with his passing and defensive prowess.
Yeah, sometimes he'll make you cringe by his passiveness, but in the end his pluses outweigh his minuses by far.

Players often stay on the Spurs for less money than they could get elsewhere.

he could have easily opted out and waited for a 3 year deal worth 12 mil or something of that sort. even if its for less money per year, it would be a longer commitment than our brass wanted to make. 4.7 is a really fair price for a dude that comes off the bench and plays 2-3 positions. very versatile on both ends of the floor and in our ball-movement offense, having a passer like him is invaluable.

I suppose you're right but I still think the Spurs are the only ones interested in him. There are no other teams better than the Spurs that bring out the best out of players. Just remember Diaw with the Bobcats. Everyone pretty much thought that he was useless at that point but the Spurs got some production out of him.

Re: Diaw officially opts in
I think the point is Diaw is worth $5 million to the Spurs in their system but not another team. He probably did earn some leverage if he wanted a longer deal, but I don't know that the Spurs wanted to offer one at similar money. Win-win everyone's happy and he's likely to stick around in S.A. for more than another year too.

Boris Diaw's top assets are is bbIQ and his passing ability, which would obviously shine on a team that thrives on offense with ball movement. the bobcats were the worst offensive team in the league and they were looking to have Diaw be one of their primary scorers, which hasn't been his shtick throughout his career. he thrived on phoenix when they were a great offensive team with shooters, and he has done really well in San Antonio, a great offensive team with shooters. it was obvious he was a terrible fit with the bobcats, asking a facilitator to be a primary scoring threat

Re: Diaw officially opts in
I think you extremely underestimate Diaw. Some teams would love to have a big man that could pass and shoot. Diaw is that kind of player. An excellent passer and he could definitely hit the open shots, even stretch it at the 3 point line. He just prefers to pass the ball even though he is wide open, which in someways hurts our team's offense. But I really think that had he gone to test the market, he could have gotten a higher offer from other teams. It is just that he is a very unselfish player and that's why I think he is a great fit, if not perfect for the Spurs.

Re: Diaw officially opts in
Spurs have a lot of tradeable expiring contracts (Bonner/Boris and even smaller ones like Mills). When you factor that in with cap space, Spurs can take on some pretty massive salary in a trade potentially.
The cap space will depend heavily on Manu's contract, waiving/amnesty of Bonner (if the don't trade him) and guys like Neal and Blair not being back.
Let's say Manu takes a 6M contract and the Spurs amnesty Bonner and Neal/Blair are gone. Spurs should have about 6M in cap space. You factor in Boris expiring/Mills expiring, and in a trade, the Spurs could take back about 12M in a trade while still signing Tiago to whatever they want essentially (ignoring the LT for the moment).

His best offensive stats was when Amar'e Stoudemire was injured, He was forced to (because nobody else) and had the full trust of D'Antoni
otherwise he just makes his teammates better ,because he never have a reliable shoot
with the desire to find a better pass for an open shot for a better shooter (more reliable)and some coach hates that
Silas one of them
So he just do the dirty work, defense, rebounds...
There only Spurs to Boris nothing else (it's Spurs or Euroligue)

Nice. Also, since he essentially now has a one year deal, there is incentive for him to stay in shape next year as well...
Diaw pisses me off because of his passiveness but he is a really vital part of our team and I'm glad he's returning, he adds a dimension to the post that we didn't have and his passing from that position especially on this team is deadly. He really needs to add a consistent three point shot to his game, he shoots at a decent clip, just needs to practice more. And he played good defense on LeBron at times and has shown the ability to guard bulkier players. Glad Diaw is coming back. :tu I'm sure Bill Walton's happy too

At the very least, they need to acquire a backup PG or ball handler to relieve some pressure off of Tony and Manu. Sorry but I don't want to take a risk hoping that CoJo will improve while Tim Duncan gets a year older. Pop and Manu cost Timmy #5 so they ought to do everything possible to sign some free agent(s).

Yeah we saw that in the finals, when TP was on the bench Pop has to put Manu in to run the play sometimes. Besides Pop needs to reduce TP's playing time by 5 min to fully heal his calf. But there's Patty.
I am thinking more of a big man who can really help Duncan, we don't want him to get tired in the regular season than the rest of the Spurs. If TD is DNP we are screwed

Great news. I admit I'm a sucker for players with high BBIQ, but Diaw really blows me away often times with his court vision and his passing. And he also is a fundamentally sound player defensively.
And I don't think 4.7 millions is too much. I could easily imagine teams where he fits in offering him a multi-year MLE-type of deal.
