Neal did his role and should be applauded. He was an undrafted free agent that turned into an actual NBA player. Hit lots of big shots and his offense kept the Spurs puttering along from the bench when Ginobili had his annual injury or was too preoccupied in helping the other team win. He even won a finals game with Green for the Spurs. Pretty good for having a salary of less than $1 million.
always liked Neal, he made me mad as hell sometimes, but man he was clutch and not afraid.

No way Gary gets a full MLE deal. No way. No need to bash Neal. He did so much more than many guys in his spot before him. He did way more good than bad and he came out of no where for most Spurs fans.
If this is the end of Gary Neal as a Spur, Ill just say thanks. He came out of nowhere and handled the load pretty damn well considering. He was a damn good shooter that wasnt afraid of the spotlight. He wasnt so hot on defense but so what? Top it off he was a good teammate and wasnt in any serious shit during his time here. If he's going, I hope he gets a big contract someplace in the East.

Gary Neal was a feast or famine guy. When he was on, he was great, but I won't miss the turnovers, bad rotations and bad shooting nights. If Neal wasn't sinking 3s, he was pretty much useless. I liked Neal. He was a gamer for his limited skill set.
All in all, he did well for the Spurs and I don't fault him for his bad back up point play. He's not a point guard, but was asked to play point guard in the NBA.

He definitely was, but conveniently the vast majority ignored the fact that his calf strain and plantar fasciitis were the primary reasons for that. For two plus seasons, he proved he was one of the best shooters in the league and a sixth man caliber scorer and that's generally worth the MLE.Quote:

I was thrilled when this guy made the roster, seemingly out of nowhere. At the time, it was hailed as yet another SA front office coup to dig up an undrafted guy who could contribute on a contender. And that's what he did. Well or hurt, highly paid or playing for peanuts, from a basketball perspective it really doesn't matter in the end. He made a positive contribution in many ways and beat the odds to do so. I'm not quite sure how so many of these armchair GMs think he can be faulted for doing what he did to the best of his ability. I hope Gary has a long and fruitful career, wherever he ends up.Quote:

How did Neal get so underrated by Spurs fans at the end? Odd, tbh. Biggest reason why the Spurs are seemingly letting him go is because SG is the deepest position on the team. There's just no way to justify another multi-year contract at that position. What Belinelli got was about the most the Spurs could pay.
Neal gave the Spurs outstanding performance for the money they paid him.

^Manu signifies the end. If he would have taken less money, the Spurs could have signed someone better than Belinelli. I can understand Tiago Splitter not wanting to sacrifice any $$$ because he's younger and it's his first shot at big $$$. But Manu? He was the one who should have sacrificed more.
