Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
Westbrook is back. Kobe will be back. DHoward is in Houston. Clippers got Doc. Golden State have gained experience. Brian Shaw may finally get Denver over the hump...something George Karl couldnt do. We re-signed a broken down SG that is more of a liabilty than an asset and a center that disappeared in the Finals. Anyone who thinks we are top 3 in the West is delusional. Tim Duncan would need to have an unbelievable year like this last one and just dont know if he has it in him after seeing the rejection on his face after the Finals ended and the way Pop treated him by benching him in the most important time in the Finals. Leonard should progress...hopefully. Parker is still an egomaniac that wants all the attention that is a wildcard...he'll have a monster game and then crush your hopes in the next with a pathetic performance. I expect Danny Green to stay d-leaguer Danny Green and barely average 10/gm like last year. So if we dont set our sights to high...we should be alright as fans. 2nd round of the playoffs and we will have a good year.

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
Fuck that. 2014 is all about reclaiming what is rightfully ours. Secure #5.
Remember, people were saying the same thing at the start of last year. Granted, if you keep saying it every year, eventually it will be true - everyone's window closes at some point - but why would you as a Spurs fan? As far as I'm concerned, we have a shot at the title (and should be favorites to make the Finals) every year until Timmy retires.

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
Denver already has a mediocre defense, and then they lost the one guy who was actually good at defense on their team...are you seriously worried about the Nuggets?
Lakers? Seriously? Do I even need to point out why we shouldn't worry about the Lakers?
Clippers have improved, and also finally got a competent coach. They will be more threatening next year...I'll give you that.
Warriors will most likely improve, but all of their success rides on 3-pt shooting and Curry's extremely fragile ankles. I'll take the Spurs.
Thunder lost their 6th man and have a pretty shitty bench now. I thought we would have beaten them last year even if we met in the playoffs and they had Westbrook. I just really don't think they're as dangerous as they were with Harden. Plus the Spurs are better than they were in 2012.
Rockets...I don't know, we'll have to see how Dwight plays in Houston. If he plays like he did in Orlando, they will be a threat. If he plays like he did in LA, then I'm not too worried. Duncan/Splitter showed they can defend him well, and I trust our perimeter players over theirs.
I'm hopeful that guys like Green/Leonard/Splitter/Joseph will all improve throughout the offseason and regular season. If Duncan/Parker can at least come close to matching their level of play last year, I think we're in great shape. Belinelli and Pendergraph will hopefully help out off the bench as well. Ginobili can't really get any worse either...only way he can go is up tbh. Let's hope last year was just an off-year.
Saying that it'll take a "miracle of God" to get back is just being a dramatic cliff jumper. Will it be easy? Of course not, when is it ever easy to make it to the NBA Finals? Can the Spurs do it? Yes they can. I still maintain that as long as Duncan and Popovich are here, we have a decent shot at the title.

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
To me getting back to the Finals is all about Kawhi taking command and succeeding in a much bigger role in the offense. Also we have got to get a handle of the back-up PG situation so were not left with Tony Parker playing both injured and exhausted. He just flat-out flamed out mid-way through the series vs the Heat. And that's not his fault. Pop decided to abandon all the back-up PG's and Parker simply couldn't adjust to all the minutes along with his injury.

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
Tell us again how Holt having less than 50% of Spurs ownership makes him the majority owner, OP.

It all comes down to health. If the spurs avoid major injuries they will be the favorites to win the west

We didn't really improve the team much this offseason. Belli is solid, but he certainly doesn't put us over the top by any means. We still have no backup SF. Hopefully Kawhi continues to improve, but I don't think it will be enough. PLus injuries are always a concern with our old players.
If another team can somehow defeat Miami in the ECF (highly doubtful cause the East is so weak), then I think we'd have a good shot to win it all. I think we'd beat Indy or Brooklyn in 5 or 6. But I don't see Indy, Brooklyn, or NYC overtaking Miami. I think they make it to a 4th straight Finals, which would result in a 3-peat unfortunately.

Spurstalk is full of losers and this offseason has revealed what losers most of you are. No one is calling for Pop's head. No one is calling bullshit on the Manu contract - as much as I love Manu - he is not worth this contract and he has deteriorated significantly and it is painful to see.

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
Ok, I've been wanting to get this stuff off my chest so here it comes. If I get banned for expressing my feelings on a forum then so be it. I'm only going to do this rant one time so let's get started.
2007… 2000 mother fucking 7. We’ve been waiting for six fucking years. Ok, six fucking years to get another championship. This franchise owes it to us Spurs fans and Tim Duncan to put together a championship team NOW. But no, typical Spurs sports fashion – bringing back Manu Ginobili healthy is like signing a big time free agent. Fuck you. Oh, we would have won if Kawhi Leonard didn’t miss a free throw or if we grabbed a rebound. Fuck you. Agh, we’re not going to amnesty Matt Bonner because he spreads the floor very well for a big guy and he’s a good trade asset. Fuck you.
Jarrett Jack and Kirilenko – there were guys out there in this offseason. You are not going to tell me that a defense oriented team would not benefit from having AK47 or Trevor Ariza instead of Matt Bonner. You will not convince me to think that way. You amnesty Bonner, pay less $$$ to Manu, and then you sign Jarrett Jack or any of the other good FA’s that were available. Oh no, Jack goes to the Cavs and AK47 to the Nets for very cheap, yeah way to go.
So what’s the big free agent signing so far, what’s the big move, the big BOLD fucking move? The answer is Marco fucking Belinelli and Jeff Pendergraph. So Gary Neal’s future is uncertain. Neal came up big in the clutch for a few games during the playoffs. We’re about to lose Dejuan Blair for possibly nothing. TP is out in France representing his NT and risk getting injured. Boris Diaw is out there tweeting pics of himself gorgeously eating. RC Buford said “Manu took a tremendous sacrifice to resign with the Spurs.” Are you fucking kidding me? Only Spurs homers will believe that line of BS.
So our bench so far includes a declining Manu Ginobili, Boris Diaw, Matt Bonner, Jeff Pendergraph (a guy with scrub career stats), Marco Belinelli (the successor to Gary Neal), and Corey Joseph (the Spurs’ biggest hope and X factor off the bench to relive Manu off his ball handling duties), and an unpromising (so far in the SL) Aaron Baynes. Yeah our bench looks very promising.
Fans will look at Matt Bonner’s stats and say “why do Spurs fans hate Matt Bonner so much?” Because he plays like he could give a fuck defensively, that’s why. Seems like every year, the depth of this team becomes less and less.
Two years ago, three years ago, the bench was the strength, the depth. How is it that 6 years later after the FO tried to sell us on the notion that loyalty and staying pat every year is actually better because we’ll be able to improve based on corporate knowledge, six years later, playoff failure after playoff failure, six fucking years later and we’re still here wearing our Duncan jerseys wondering when the fuck is this shit going to happen? Sorry fellas, doesn’t look good and it’s all contingent on the team staying healthy and we still have Manu here. Manu is the ultimate poser when it pertains to his value to a team. One in every four games, he’ll have a good game to get his stats up, and that entire game he’ll have played no defense.
Ok, so let’s run down this check list again. The depth is gone so if someone gets hurt again, we’re screwed. Still haven’t brought in a true high level second option off the bench next to Manu Ginobili who can score with the ball in his own hand. Still no backup to Kawhi. I mean you can say Boris Diaw can score out of the low post but he flows around the elbow and put he passes up a lot of open shots. Deshaun Thomas, I’d love to see this kid continue his good work and take over as the backup to Kawhi Leonard.
Once again, it’s the fucking Spurs standing pat, spending as little money as possible (or wasting cap space to resign Manu and Splitter), and wasting the MLE on Pendergraph (a dude with scrub stats) and Bellinelli. Ok, do you really think the Spurs franchise is going all out like the Rockets, Heat, GSW, and the Nets? No. I’ll give the team this, they draft pretty well. They’ve done a pretty good job through the draft. As far as free agency, it’s been garbage. As far as trades, it’s been garbage. The biggest news in the offseason so far is that the Spurs were working out a trade w/the Wolves for AK47… shit that didn’t get very far.
Now, do folks out there who aren’t Spurs fans, this is to the non-Spurs fans; do you look at my favorite team and do you fucking say “that’s a team that is committed to building a champion!” Do you say that to yourselves? Or do you say “ah the Spurs, they play hard and they are overachievers.” Every fucking year man, then the injuries hit and we’re fucked. So much pressure is added to a 38 year old Tim Duncan, an inconsistent playoff performer in Tony Parker, and a 36 year old Manu way past his prime with the way that this team is constructed. I find it so unfair to put all this pressure on the resurgence of our franchise player Tim Duncan.
You’ll know what? Every time you look at this fucking team, they’re taking shortcuts, they’re not going the full distance to build a champion. We want to win one more fucking championship, WE WANT TO WIN ONE MORE FUCKING CHAMPIONSHIP; it’s as simple as that. Is the FO doing everything they can to build that championship team? No. No they’re not.

With so much depth, hopefully Pop does what he's been doing best over the last couple of years in managing players minutes. Really we don't need homecourt against any other team but I think against the Heat it was the difference.

And to answer the OP, no it's not going to take a miracle of God to get back to the finals. If we are healthy I don't see why we won't get there. Barring an injury or downright playing bad, I see the Spurs in the finals again.

We should have beaten the Heat anyways but yet that GAME 7 on the road can be too much to overcome, you would need HC you are correct.

It would also help if that 2-3-2 format went to hell. A game 6 would have been played in San Antonio instead of Miami.

Wow just thought about something regarding homecourt, if Miami is dialed in throughout the season they will no doubt get HC advantage. On top of playing in a overall underwhelming conference...what goes unnoticed is the free 16 wins they get by virtue of playing in the league's weakest division, the Southeast.

Exactly, thats why Spurs must break their asses to get HC advantage, the East is such a shitty conference they have the finals ticket for granted

That 2-3-2 shit is riduculous! I remember how much I hated going to Detroit for three games in that damn Arena! In the end it paid off because we won game 5 there, but if you go down 2-3 that sucks. If we lost that game 5 against Detroit they got us in 6. I like the old 2-2-1-1-1 so I agree. We stole one in Miami though and needed to win our three at home, when we dropped game 4 I was very upset.

Yeah I was upset at that too. We had our chance to really put Miami in a hole in game 4 but we didn't play well and Miami's stars played up to their potential imo.

We are clearly the best in the West. OKCs bench is joke. Beli will take the pressure off Manu in the second unit along with Joseph. Baynes could be apart of our rotation as rim protector and rebounder. Diaw can play 3, 4 or 5 and can have offense run through him.
Houston is maybe Asik and Howard can't play together. Dwight can't score consistently in the post.
GSW has issues. Barnes and Iggy play the same position and one will be forced to play out of position (PF) which takes minutes away from Bogut & Lee. They also have 3 new rotation players.
D league Green? He had a fantastic post season.

I wonder what'll happen, god forbid, if the Spurs DIDN'T make the playoffs one year. I think the Spurs fan base would cut by around 90%, disbanding and becoming Nets fan as they have a "bright future" and they wear similar jerseys.

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
This is a joke, OP. The Lakers are as big of a threat to us as the Celtics are to the Heat. The Clippers will improve no doubt, but at the end of the day their success rides on Blake and DeAndre's development imo, and neither can hit a free throw or score in the post consistently so that shouldn't be a problem. The Warriors have a fantastic roster, but the health of Curry, Bogut, and Lee to a degree has them as a major question mark along with their reliance on shooting. OKC simply isn't the juggernaut they were two years ago, as the roster they currently have is absolutely 100% reliant on westbrook and durant combining for near 60 ppg every game. Houston is the team with the highest ceiling in the west due to their solid outside shooting to aid howard and harden. Still, we as Spurs fans should feel very optimistic about this upcoming season i think

Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
I wouldn't say a miracle from God but we'll have to play better than we did in 2013 for sure. Which I don't see happening really.
-
Re: Its gonna take a miracle of God to get back to the Finals.
The Spurs were one rebound away from their fifth championship, they will right there in the hunt next season. Danny Green and Corey Joseph will get better. There are a couple of contracts that can be unloaded at next year's trade deadline if RC and Pop think they need more help. And Leonard will most likely take a step forward, I'd love to see the Spurs run more post-up plays for him, that way teams will no longer get away with cross-matching to put a bigger body on Parker. Chalmers and Miller spent too much time on Leonard and the Spurs didn't make them pay for it nearly enough.

I dont condone betting but if I did I would make a killing on here with my fellow Spurs fans being homers. No way we make the Finals. No way we win more than 55 games. Think with your head not your heart.

Tell us again how Holt having less than 50% of Spurs ownership makes him the majority owner, OP.

Just like how you wanted to bet with Kori that Holt was the majority owner?

Westbrook wouldntve changed things. Kobe either. Brian Shaw is a threat? Karl was a big reason why Nuggets were good w/out a star. Houston? Nah. Golden State? To me the biggest threat. Bottom line, if Kawhi's and other youngsters ascend faster than the older guys decline we may even be better.
