I don't find this to be an lol thing tbh. If it's that serious, why not let it be known by any means possible?

When did you? When you learned Farsi?
I'm saying whitemamba could easily talk to the media. Almost as easily as he posts on SpursTalk. Alex Jones is on six days a week.

nice backtrack, now his uncle doesn't have to contact the media, whitemamba should do it now :rolleyes
and what would talking to the media accomplish exactly?
again this is not a Hollywood movie where an email to "the media" will be taken seriously much less have them do anything about it. this is not Erin Brockovich :lol

Do you really think they are worried about talking to the press? Please understand how grave the situation is over there.
So they never move about and leave where they are but you think they are qualified to comment on what comprise rebel forces around the country. Are salafi elements running around trying to implement sharia in his neighborhood? Are they watching syrian TV?

The same thing it's accomplishing here. Informing. What would it hurt? Why would you want him to shut up about it? Is that what you would do in the same situation?

I don't know if that is the right way to describe it. I get amusement to an extent from what you say but it is in a way that I feel debases myself a bit. Pity and amused contempt are not productive. I can see that.

The American press is free because of the first amendment. Recall the backlash when Obama tried to force the AP to turn over sources and spy on them. That is a matter of course in Iran and Russian press. I know it is coopted and yes we have taken a back in civil liberties to a lot of EU countries but we are a hell of a lot freer than the opposing view.
So having conflicting interests is enough to be enemies?
Sorry but this is beyond COld war thinking. This is a childish insecurity complex. THE US WON. YOUR MILITARY HAS MORE THAN 50X THE CAPACITY OF THE RUSSIAN MILITARY, MORE THAN 10,000X THE SYRIAN MILITARY. Just because Russia doesnt vote the same as you at the UN, and because they *gasp* want to compete for resources doesnt make them an enemy. It makes them ANOTHER COUNTRY.
Ok, Syria helps Iran. Can you give me specific examples of the types and magnitude of problems they have caused the US and its allies? Are you comfortable that their list is smaller than yours? Is it really enough to justify bombing a country in the middle of a civil war?
As far as press, I think it is very difficult to quantify how many hells more freer your press is. But assuming that it is at the very least moderately freer- since when does free = accurate? Unless I totally misunderstood my philosophy courses in high school, they are completely disparate concepts. One could argue that a "free" press has a better chance to be accurate, but given the economic model of most press outlets I think you are grossly overstating that chance.

Re: Rebels caught with chemical weapons
People are so brainwashed by the media...
-Whitemamba
People who follow current events rely on some sort of source to gather information. Now that there are so many outlets we have to pick and choose what we deem credible. We are not in Syria. In order to carry out a chemical attack of this magnitude the perpetrators must have access to a sophisticated delivery system and it must be well coordinated.
So what group in Syria, at this time, has these capabilities? The military.
The fact that you have relatives living day to day in this mayhem is indeed sad. But in the end, for the people on this board, you are but another source of information. A person reads your posts and puts them up against everything else they have read and deem credible.
So tell me what being brainwashed by the media means in today's world?
We are supposed to believe what we read by a poster on ST who has relatives who know people who have access to information from the street? And this is more reliable than anything else WE read? Really?
There are people on this board that have a worldview that some of us deem ideological and static. It does not change, and it is not based on credible evidence. These people seek out information based on their idealology. They don't form opinions based on credible evidence. They instead seek evidence that fits their idealology. Rational people do not do this. So when you come on this board and state you are glad to share you views with rational people...
You can understand the skepticism I hope.

A free press also self critiques information accuracy. News outlets get punched by others if they are incorrect in their haste to be first with information.
What press do you read that you deem credible? Lets share sources since we all are after the same thing, the facts as we know them currently. Since we are not zealots and ideologues lets share.

its one thing to be accurate, another to include all relevant information. Omission is the easiest and safest way to manipulate an argument. On top of that the "free" press' (corporate) ownership uses it to sell their products and the politicians that sell their products, and actual journalism takes a back seat to that and you get papers / news hours that barely contain actual news, let alone a comprehensive account of confirmed facts. Thats why its important to look at multiple sources. I dont have the time or the energy to follow all stories closely and I havent been doing so with this one (and I dont live in the US so I see some international media you probably arent familiar with). But I dont really need to know who fired what when the proposed solution is damaging for every party involved (save maybe Israel or oil speculators). And especially damaging for the supposed victims.
How is bombing a country in the middle of a civil war going to help? When the japanese did that to the chinese the entire world condemned them for being opportunistic cowards. Either take the weapons away or let them finish their war. If Assad wins then you can go after him, but bombing them doesnt help them and it doesnt help the US. Its hardly heroic to suckerpunch a bully from afar, less so if you run the risk of trampling his victims. Justice requires investigation and communication, piling more rubble and more bodies on top doesnt help. Regardless of whether the rebels are AQ or not, another US bomb run is only going to make the US more enemies in Syria and around the world. Especially considering the only other modern era chemical attack the US either looked the other way or actually helped, depending on your sources.

If you only read big US newspapers and watch cable news you are going to be really confused.
The internet is this amazing invention that lets people link thousands of different news sources together without having to read them all on a day by day basis. If you click around enough all of a sudden the bigger picture starts to emerge and you can make up your own mind as to what seems most likely to have actually happened.

Yep.
Stay away from just one view. See what they all agree on, and what they disagree on. Parse and think about the facts presented and ignore the journalists opinion. In reviewing more than one source, you will find relevant facts omitted by others.

So with above in mind (yes I realize the criteria in this rating system is not bullet proof) where do people go to get information off the Internet realizing that there are thousands of sources, some of which have very clear agendas?
One might think Finland (ranked #1), yet Finland does not have people on the ground and sources to compare with for example the BBC, The Guardian, The NY Times. Just because a country allows for more press freedom does not automatically imply that their press will not have an ideological bend. I think readers in the UK and US would classify the aforementioned news organizations as more liberal.
So I make a plea for sharing and reason and this is what I get...
I dont have the time or the energy to follow all stories closely and I havent been doing so with this one (and I dont live in the US so I see some international media you probably arent familiar with).
-Diego
And from a relatively sane poster as far as I can tell.
I can only conclude that putting up sources will cause ridicule by posters who most likely have sources that have a clear ideology and, in the case of Che, SA10, etc... are most likely written by fruitbats.
-
Re: Rebels caught with chemical weapons
pgardn, part of my point was that its not very useful to just list sources. Circumstances dictate for each story what sources are "best". Even the best paper can make mistakes, whether it be factual inaccuracy or editorial stupidity. The only paper I consider "above" the rest is the guardian and like I said I dont trust anything and everything they publish.
Many many times even when you do follow a story closely and read every paper, you are still left with doubts as to what "really" happened. In this case i think that is the most likely outcome and that is part of the reason I havent followed closely. The other is that I live thousands of miles away from both syria and the US and it barely affects me. If I were from the US or lived in the US I would be out protesting, for sure (as I did in the aftermath of 9/11, against the patriot act and attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq).

The best thing to do is let assad finish of the AQ rebels, then demand assad to remove his chemical weapons, if the case can be made that those weapons would end up being a threat to our citizens in the future. But going in there and then holding "democracy" is noob neocon shit that is going to backfire.
