Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
http://torontosun.com/Sports/Columni...5/1160089.html
We heard a crazy trade rumour the other day.
And we mean crazy as in, "That probably never will happen," as opposed to, "That's an impossibility."
According to an NBA source, the subject of a blockbuster deal involving Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace and Ben Wallace has been broached between the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Detroit Pistons.
The T-Wolves supposedly would send Garnett to the Pistons for the two Wallaces and two first-round picks.
Sounds goofy, huh?
There certainly is a chance a rumour like that got started merely because long-time Minnesota coach Flip Saunders now has taken over as coach of the Pistons.
And while at face value it seems like way too much for the Pistons to give up, those two picks surely would come very late in the first round. So essentially it would boil down to a two-for-one deal, notwithstanding the chance of other players being thrown in to match salaries.
Anyway, the purpose here is not to debate the merits of such a far-fetched transaction. But when we heard the rumour, it got us thinking:
The Pistons, who a month and a half ago came within one game of winning their second championship in as many years, already have made some big changes this off-season (Saunders replacing Larry Brown), and at least are rumoured to be pondering some others. In fact, just about everyone in the Eastern Conference has made significant moves, and a good number of the teams are demonstrably better.
Just about every team, arguably, except the Raptors.
Now, the Raptors take enough gut punches from fans and media, so this is not meant to be another one. True, Raptors general manager Rob Babcock is dealing with some financial and roster incongruities that were of his own making, but he also inherited a grotesquely unattractive situation when he took over the reins less than a year and a half ago.
So this isn't a blind-side swipe. It merely is a cold calculation of the prospects for a club that is coming off back-to-back 33-win seasons.
So far this summer, the Raptors have lost Donyell Marshall, they surely are going to lose Milt Palacio, and they may be in the process of losing Matt Bonner.
They have added two first-round picks in Charlie Villanueva and Joey Graham, and an undrafted Spanish point guard in Jose Calderon. Second-round pick Roko Ukic signed with a European team, and Babcock said the other day that his other second-round pick, Uros Slokar, almost certainly will play in Europe next season, too.
All things considered, that doesn't stack up particularly well when you ponder the rest of the East.
From top to bottom, the teams that made the playoffs in the East last season were the Miami Heat, the Pistons, the Boston Celtics, the Chicago Bulls, the Washington Wizards, the Indiana Pacers, the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Nets. Some of those clubs may take a step back, but we don't feel we're going out on much of a limb by saying this: All eight of them still will be better than the Raptors next season.
And what of the other non-playoff squads?
The Cleveland Cavaliers, with LeBron James (not to mention Marshall and Larry Hughes), are sure to be better.
The New York Knicks, with coach Brown on the job and a few more athletes in tow, likely will garner a few more wins.
The Milwaukee Bucks, with No. 1 overall pick Andrew Bogut, should improve.
The Orlando Magic, with an emerging Dwight Howard, won't be a pushover.
And even the bottom-of-the-barrell teams -- the Atlanta Hawks and the Charlotte Bobcats -- really aren't that bad if you look at their noticeably athletic rosters.
It's no great mystery where this leaves the Raptors.
This isn't an alarmist tirade. And we understand the concept of taking a step back before taking a step forward.
But unless Minnesota decides to trade Garnett to Toronto for nothing, how many games can the Raptors be expected to win next season?

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
That's a rather old rumor. It circulated in this forum like a month ago. Canuckistanis are behind the times.

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
sorry never saw it, this article came out today.
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
I don't think the Pistons would like to go from trying to win another championship to trying to make the playoffs.
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
I can just imagine this sportswriter sitting down trying to figure out how he was going to write this column. "Well, the Raptors are going to suck this year, but that's not anything new. How, oh how will I attract readers to my column? I've got it! I'll make it seem like it's about a blockbuster trade rumor, and then I'll spend the rest of the article telling people what they already know: that the Raptors suck."

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
Some form of that trade has been posted three times in the NBA-Other forum.
This is the weakest one yet.

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
That would allow KG to resume his first round and out career from his one year lottery hiatus.

So KG surrounded by Tay, Rip, and Billups wouldn't make a run at a championship?

So, what parallel universe do you think the Pistons are in to trade away two guys who combined currently make less $$$ than KG, let alone the combo that got them to the Finals two striaght years for a chump who can't get his team anywhere in the playoffs?

clubalien, Ben Wallace for KG doesn't even come close to working when you factor in salary. You post more about trades that have no financial legitimacy than anyone I have ever seen.
Do you get all your trade ideas from hoopshype or realgm or something?

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
the deal is TWO walalces + draft picks+ filelr they don't list everything that makes the deal work just basics
I was saying the only reason they INCLUDED ben wallace in trade was becuase they were getting KG and they were UNLICKLY to trade ben wallace otherWISE
BUT IF he were avilable we should go after BEN WALLACE

Again, apply some common sense please. The Pistons have been to the Finals two straight years.
Why would they trade their starting front line for one guy who can't get his team anywhere in the post-season, especially when said starting front line's combined salaries is less than Garnett's
It doesn't make any sense, from the financial perspective to the common sense one.
Now if Isiah ever becomes the Detroit GM, I could see it happening, but not with Dumars up there.

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
the articles title seems more of those u see on tabloids.
they write a very interesting headline.. only to find out after a sentences that thats not the content of the entire article.
that dude is sick.
his articles title is about a trade involving kg and the wallaces.. then he ends up talking about the RAPTORS
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
Garnett's played with Billups before. Where'd they get together? KG is the most overrated player in the NBA. He's constantly mentioned in the same breath as TD and Shaq yet he's been unable to consistently take his team deep into the postseason. He's been surrounded by a bunch of talent during this career and yet, nothing.
Sure, he can put up big #s every season. Big f-ing deal.

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
Also, you take away the Wallaces and the 'D' in Detroit suddenly becomes silent.
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
Ignore Clubalien man... that guy makes less sense than Duck..
:lol
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
Man, no way in hell would Detroit ever do that deal. There's just no way Garnett is worth the two most important players in the best defensive frontcourt in NBA history.
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
I can't believe this is even up for discussion. Not freaking way this trade is gonna happen!
-
Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
I posted this on a wolves board this morning. I'm sorry but that's not even a close trade. I'd do that in a heartbeat. I have a hard time imagining ANY single player worth those two guys right now, including TD, if Rasheed's head is on straight.
The draft picks are worthless unless they include a stipulation that Joe Dumars gets to select the draftee for the wolves.
And you guys think i'm a homer.

Joe supposedly straightened this out yesterday;

If it were true I'd be against it.

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
:td :td
I think this would be a dumb ass trade all around.
plus I think that 2 wallaces and 2 draft picks are worth more than 1 KG.
If this were to go down, both teams would be happy with playoff spots next year becasue they would NOT be ECF contenders.
how do rumors like this get started?
Is it just because Flip is now in Detroit?

Re: Rumor involving Garnett and the Wallaces
Dumars denounces Garnett rumor
The two Wallaces and two first-round picks to Minnesota? He says it isn't so.
By Dave Dye / The Detroit News
http://www.detnews.com/2005/pistons/...C01-272255.htm
Trading Ben Wallace and Rasheed Wallace?
Say it ain't so, Joe.
Joe Dumars, the Pistons' president, did just that.
Dumars squelched a wild rumor that the Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves have discussed a possible deal that would include sending Kevin Garnett to Detroit for Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace and two first-round draft picks.
A column by Bill Harris in Friday's Toronto Sun created quite a stir among Detroit basketball fans the last couple of days. Harris attributed the rumor to an unidentified "NBA source."
But Dumars said any rumors involving the Pistons' seven core players -- Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace, Richard Hamilton, Chauncey Billups, Tayshaun Prince, Antonio McDyess and Lindsey Hunter -- should be disregarded.
Dumars said he has no intention of breaking up the nucleus of a team that has reached the NBA Finals the last two seasons.
He also said he has not even talked lately with Kevin McHale, the Timberwolves' vice president.
Harris described the blockbuster possibility as "crazy" and "farfetched."
"There certainly is a chance a (rumor) like that got started merely because long-time Minnesota coach Flip Saunders has taken over as coach of the Pistons," Harris wrote.
Garnett, a 6-foot-11 forward, averaged 22.2 points and 13.5 rebounds last season. He is an eight-time NBA All-Star and was the league's Most Valuable Player in 2003-04.
