Congrats R.C. Well deserved and long overdue. :tu
It's kind of funny he'd win it this year though when he didn't really do anything (i.e. failed to execute any notable trades / sign any notable free agents from the buyout market) :lol
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Well.. He was bound to win one, and it's been a long time coming. That said, congrats R.C!

Body of Work award along with league's best record this year. Why not?

Then again the other contenders didn't do much either... which means the time was ripe for a "body of work" type of award.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Excellent. Tbh I wasn;t expecting him to be in the running this year. I figured Morey would run away with it simply due to Dwight Howard

Knowing when to do nothing is a pretty good thing to know, as it turns out.
Also, re-signing Splitter sure looks like a damn fine move right now, doesn't it?
Congratulations R.C. You have been talked about for years as a brain trust in the F.O. Nice to see the recognition more than lip-service!!

Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
It's obviously a lifetime achievement award which is more than fine with me tbh. RC has deserved it and is the Executive of the Century by far.
But any other GM that brings in a tiny toothed loser like Ayres should have been fired :lol
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
The history of the NBA needed RC to get this award at least once to recognize just how remarkably good the Spurs front office has been for a generation (regardless of what many Spurs fans think of it). Parts of the quiet greatness of this franchise during this era has already been lost with Bruce Bowen having never gotten the Defensive Player of the Year award he so richly deserved (and Tim Duncan likely retiring without ever having won that award either).
I believe that accolades genuinely don't mean much for these guys, but it's good to know that their mark on the NBA's history is now permanent and undeniable.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Congrats to RC and the Spurs!!!
I think he deserves it this year for NOT changing the team radically. That's an executive decision that seems to be paying dividends.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
I'm still bitter Bird won it that one yearjust to make him MVP/COY/EOY.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
He should honestly have at least 2-3 of them, tbh.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
RC did something that takes a lot of guts. He overpaid a scrub that hindered the Spurs in Jeff Ayres and made the team stronger by overcoming that obstacle.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
I think one of the reasons why RC hadn't won in the past, is that Pop, as team President and Head Coach, is perceived in the media to make all the decisions.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
I don't think RC gets enough credit for training a lot of FO guys in the league who have turned out to be successful GMs after a stint with the Spurs. They may add their own wrinkles to the Spurs system of management, but the result speaks for itself. Other teams want Spurs FO alumni.

Also, those alumni are now voting for this award, since the Executive of the Year is voted upon by the other league general managers and not by the media. Having old friends with votes (and likely an understanding that this award is long overdue) helps.

Congrats on RC and Pop winning their just due awards this year, well deserved.

Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Great news and well-deserved.
Something terrible though, I got the notification on my phone from the Spurs app and saw "Breaking news", then "RC Buford", and I immediately thought he passed away or something. :(
Very glad to read "Executive of the Year" after that little scare.

Ayers = EoY? Who knew? That might increase his trade value.
If the Pacers would have finished the season as strong as they started, Bird would have won in a landslide. There is something to be said for chemistry and continuity, and that Granger/Turner trade is looking like a disaster.

RC Buford joked he won Exec of the Year because he's finally got enough former staffers in GM posts to stuff ballot box.

Pop is basically a media hog disguising as someone who doesn't like the media. Players are kept in line as well as RC and the rest of the staff. Pop, though, steals the limelight with his "coaches interview" schtik.

Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
I thought this was the Spurs' weakest off-season in recent memory. (I know 09 ended up being a failure, but we didn't know that until a year or so later.) But I guess there wasn't much real competition this year. King would have been a shoe-in had the Nets not had such a horrible start. As it was, instead of him getting credit for pulling off a huge deal, he got blamed for giving up so much of the future for such little return. I thought Danny Ainge did a pretty good job, but Boston sucked too much for him to have any chance to winning.
I probably would have given it to Cho out in Charlotte. His signings worked well. He made a smart trade to add talent. Overall he help bring a team from the bottom of the East to being a little respectable, and he did so without hindering his team's future prospects.

do they really give this award based on the current year?
you can't really judge FO moves until years later
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Gonna be honest.
It's bullshit, and not even by a little.
The Suns were predicted to have 18-20 wins. Both Hornacek and McDonough are uniquely responsible for a team who exceeded expectation by 30 games by trading veterans, acquiring hungry bench players, and having a vision and blueprint for success.
I get Buford is overall deserving, and Pops is Pops, but you all suck for tipping a figurative cap to such a goddamn travesty. Awards have officially slutted up their integrity.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
:lol Suns were "predicted". What a terrible argument. By that logic, we can say Duncan is MVP, Pop COY and RC EOY and Manu 6MOY & Kawhi MIP because the Spurs have been "predicted" to be too old for so many years. They not only were "predicted" to melt down after what happened in last years finals, but they came out and had the best record in the league despite massive injuries and these "predictions".
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Don't be an ass.
It's bullshit and you know it.
They had a bottom five roster before McDonough, and finished with 48 wins when he finished.
Many lament the past robberies of RC while with the same breath cheering on his bullshit lifetime win in the same bullshit robbery fashion at the expense of a rookie GM who took one of the league's bleakest rosters and futures and in one offseason changed its fortunes immeasurably.
All's fair, but calling a spade a spade doesn't make you a bad fan. It makes you a good one.
I can understand Pop. Did a hell of a job managing injuries, age.
But Buford is straight slung bullshit by jealous execs at the immediate and lasting effects McDonough has made to a team completely written off by even is Suns fans.
-

Don't be a head-in-the-sand RCtard.
It's a stolen, bullshit honor at the expense of the rightful rookie winner. Execs voted, sent a message. I'll send one, too.
Go simultaneously skullfuck yourselves.

Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
McD did the following in last year's off-season:
Traded:
Jared Dudley + 2nd round pick --> Eric Bledsoe :lol
Luis Scola --> Gerald Green + Miles Plumlee + 1st round pick :lol :lol
Marcin Gortat + Shannon Brown + Kendall Marshall --> Emeka Okafor's $14mil expiring + 1st round pick
Hired Jeff Hornacek as coach
So basically he inherited a 25-win team with one of the worst rosters in the NBA, flipped a bunch of non-stars into a couple of 1st round picks and Eric Bledsoe, hired a coach of the year candidate, and turned the Suns into a 48-win team in the Western conference. His moves put our rebuilding efforts about 3 years ahead of schedule.
This is clearly a lifetime achievement award for RC, but McDonough got straight robbed here. Pop over Hornacek is understandable, if debatable. This is the first award this postseason I feel like they got completely wrong.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
:lol Why are you so mad over this award? RC's been snubbed for this award for 10+ years....
Plus the league already gave Dragic his Most Improved Award so it's not like their season was completely ignored but at the end of the day, they still missed the playoffs.
If anything, I'd be mad at my GM for putting my team in a crappy position for a team in the NBA, not good enough for the playoffs and not crappy enough for a good lottery pick.
I'll be all for McDonough wining next season's award if the Suns can draft well and pick up an impact FA and they make a nice run next year, but I don't know if he should be lauded for having a mediocre year at best..
I've just never seen anybody be so mad over a GM of the year award tbh...:lol

Plain. Simple.
Anyone saying differently is an RCtard without wit or worth to any discussion.

-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
always new, pointless arguments on ST.
-
Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
It's not like RC hasn't been jobbed in this category in the recent past; the year that he acquired Leonard, alone - for crissakes, Larry Bird, who (in retrospect) got fleeced in that deal won the award that year - should have netted him the award, but didn't.
So if not now, then when should Buford get the award he has so richly deserved for so long? I don't think there can really be any doubt that Buford has deserved this award for a number of years.
At some point, overcoming all of the obstacles that should prevent the Spurs from being competitive on a championship level in San Antonio (of all markets) for this long through the slow and steady process of building an organization deserves this type of recognition, even if it didn't occur as the result of a substantial turnaround or as the product of flashy moves.

Not in a year where he did almost nothing and others inherited goodman bottom-5 trainwrecks, put the train back together again, and if not for a 50-game injury derailment to a 20-5-5 starter, would have won the extra 2 games and been a 50-win playoff team.
If for no other reason, this season gave Hornacek and McDonough all the ammunition they needed to sell high to tank. And they didn't.

Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
RC's been robbed probably 4-5 times. He usually gets F'd by some GM that makes a splashy FA signing, and then spends the next 4-5 years trying to dump the contract. :lol
I had a Toronto fan trying to convince me that Ujiri deserved the award for the second straight year for dumping bad contracts. I told him that over the years, NO GM has done better at a) not getting into bad contracts and b) getting out of them when he did. Over the years they dumped Rasho, Malik, and Richard fucking Jefferson. :lol

Re: RC Buford wins Executive of the Year (finally)
Suns fans acting like RC hipchecked a guy into the scorer's table and provoked dudes to leave the immediate vicinity of the bench resulting in the NBA imposing a playoff suspension that likely cost their team a series and a title.
Like that ever happened.

I laid out why McD deserved the award. I agree with you guys that RC deserved the award in the past, but this seems like a very strange year to give it to him, since all he did was keep a Finals team intact.

I don't think anybody in Spurstalk had a vote. Maybe rascal?
