China's military capabilities are growing, but they are overrated as of now. Japan has more advanced capabilities, not to mention the backing of the US. If China does attack, which is HIGHLY doubtful, it might just receive a short and sharp ass whooping.

obama recently mentioned the US will back Japan on this if there is conflict

he'll send a drone in to do surveillance of them fighting and then take credit for whatever happens (if it's positive)

We aren't talking about China bombing Tokyo and occupying the main islands. These are a few small unoccupied islands at the end of the chain that have always been disputed. This is a good time for China to stir up a little nationalist fervor as there is a very good chance their economy is gonna suck in 2014/2015.
