He can guard multiple positions but I'm not sure how great he's at it, besides most of the time he hides on easy matchups to rest these days...

Re: Kawhi Leonard named to All Defensive 2nd team
Tony Allen should be there.

Re: Kawhi Leonard named to All Defensive 2nd team
All-Defensive selections are always terrible though. Kobe has something like 12 of them and he's been a crappy defender for most of his career.

Durant on Defense
Durant Post Screens Drives Pull-ups Break Threes
Amount 2 4 3 1 2 5
PPP 1 1.5 1.33 0 1 3
There’s no real way to sugarcoat this: Durant had an abysmal defensive game. As much as we rag on Beli for not being able to stop anyone, I’m not sure he could ever do this poor of a job. The Spurs attacked Durant in every way possible, and despite the headlines KD made about him stepping up on that end, he completely folded. What’s most sad is that Durant wasn’t even put in bad match-ups very often. The only big Durant guarded was Diaw, and Boris missed two free throws in two post-up attempts.
Durant was absolutely powerless to stop Parker’s penetration, not even being able to use his length to obstruct. I consider that sort of inexcusable, but I understand people wanting to give KD a break for that. The thing is, calling Parker and Diaw understandable mismatches only explains 5/16 possession, and 7/29 points Durant gave up. The rest came from players at his own position, Leonard and Ginobili and especially Green. It was kind of disturbing to see any player get picked on so much, actually. I know it was the team’s plan to make Durant work at both ends, but I doubt they’d ever imagine that KD would give up twice as many points as he scored.
Beli outplayed Durant on D. Let that sink in.

Congrats to Kawhi, though he should have gotten All Defensive 1st team. My list would have looked something like this:

Danny Green - G
Kawhi Leonard - F
Serge Ibaka - F
Joakim Noah - C

Green led the league in blocks per game. I believe he was second in guards for DRtg (a stat I dislike, but still) for guards as well. The numbers were there. But he'll never get credit for it with Leonard next to him. Kawhi will have to win the awards for both of them.
-
Re: Kawhi Leonard named to All Defensive 2nd team
It's hard to take these awards seriously when a guy like CP3 is selected in the 1st team. I'll never understand how this player in particular became a media favorite with so little actual game (not to mention achievements).

Splitter really should have gotten more votes.
He's the more versatile Spurs bigman defender at this point (I love Duncan, but he's nowhere near as good defending P&Rs nowadays), and despite not getting blocks, opposing players shoot a lower FG% at the rim on shots he's defending.

Maybe next year. Reputations are made in the playoffs when national media pays attention to non-local teams. For example, the Finals last year elevated Kawhi's rep a lot (and justifiably so). So, this year Tiago got a lot of good press for his performances against Dirk and Aldridge. Of course, since those were the early rounds of the playoffs it might not have the same effect and be forgotten by next year's vote. If Tiago gets some burn in the Finals (and he might get to spend some time on Bosh), then it will help. Of course, based on last year's finals Tiago may hardly play.

Yup, unless you have eye popping stats (steals/blocks) you have to earn the rep. Last year Danny got the rep of being a great 3pt shooter if he does a great job on Wade (or whoever he ends up defending) then he'll start earning the defensive rep that he deserves.

True but this is still considered a regular season award and what rep has Granger earned to get votes in the last couple of years when he's been sidelined for most of that time? Now, in regards to the Finals, yeah, I don't trust Splitter in this matchup at all. He might as well be Jeff Ayres as far as the Heat are concerned.

I agree its supposed to be just for the given regular season. But "reps" matter and reps are made in the playoffs.
Agreed, I worry about Splitter. But he's been paying much better this year, so he might come through. We'll see.

Re: Kawhi Leonard named to All Defensive 2nd team
Defensive accolades in the NBA are by far the most inaccurate and undeserved selections, as everybody should know by now, tbh:lol..
Kawhi deserves it, though, but ya, none of the voters or even coaches actually pay attention or even give a shit(as evidenced by the Harden votes)..

Re: Kawhi Leonard named to All Defensive 2nd team

Re: Kawhi Leonard named to All Defensive 2nd team
The Warriors were actually one of the best defensive teams in the L surprisingly, its their O that held them back when you look at the metrics.
Still.. most of the D is due to Bogut being the best defensive anchor in the L when healthy. Plus, Iggy arguably isn't even the best perimeter defender on his own team, id give that to Klay Thompson.

Allen is a better defender than Leonard, but I guess its a position thing.
The votes have to take into account the regular season where some of this guys take games off.

The only individual accomplishment that should be celebrated is finals MVP..
Iggy, CP3...Unreal.

Westbrook missed huge chunks of the season though, and he's also not such a great off the ball defender.
That said, Paul is vastly overrated.
