Re: Brent Barry on the block?
I don`t believe this. Having said that, I would certainly hope the Spurs would not move him. Hell, he got his slump out of him, he has one year of team knowledge invested, is a great team player. Damn, you do NOT want to lose Brent Barry, at least not before next season. Beyond 2006 is another story when age might start becoming a substantive issue.

CRRRAP.
I'll be happy if our team achieves the same result but if Barry performs the same way he did last year I'll be calling for his friggin head. Folks, he sucked last year...period. His career numbers warranted his contract and we made the right decision to sign him. I really thought that he would have averaged 12 to 14 points a game and really thrived. Hell, his brother put up similar numbers for 1 mill. vet minimum. We can replace that.
The numbers tell the story right? Sometimes I wonder if people who contribute to this forum A) watch the games and/or B) know anything about basketball.

No, the numbers don't always tell the story (Insert Bruce Bowen and Robert Horry's numbers here ), and I completely agree with your second sentence.
I for one, have a habit of watching and re-watching games and yes, I know something about basketball. Are you actually trying to debate me on what I saw from Brent Barry ?
Let's see, you said " he played well in the first round, was okay in the second, was a major factor in jumping on the team with the league's best record in game one on the road in the WCF, and came to play in the finals...."
Ok, go back and re-look at Brent's numbers. I'll make it easy:
http://www.nba.com/playerfile/brent_...ame_stats.html
You are telling me he played well against the Nuggets. The same Nuggets he posted a fat 0 pts, 4 assists and 1 rebound in a quarter and a half of floor time in game 1. That prompted Pop to take drastic measures and bring Manu off the bench.
You said he played ok against the Sonics: First off, that was statistically his worst series and secondly, with the series tied at 4 games, Brent was on the floor for 22 min.(Almost a whole half of a game) and scored 0 pts, 0 rebs and 0 assists in a pivotal game 5. Do you know how difficult it is to do that ?
Yeah, I know I picked out his worst games and he did have about 6 games of double digit points, but he posted alot more 3 and 5 point games. He was brought in here to score points and hit the open jumper. He drove the ball way to little and was too passive (excuse the pun) in our offense. Defense is a whole other story that's been well documented.
Brent did play well against the Suns and I was thrilled to see that. That's what I expected from him the whole year. Make shots when you need them the most. He also played a very good game 7 against the Pistons and played well in game 3 I think. But that's about it. I think you are caught up with the fact that we won the Championship. I'm not sure we can do that again without improvement from Brent or bringing in another player.
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
Yes, Brent did undoubtedly have his ups-and-downs. Even I have been on the Barry Bandwagon since we signed him, which came to be quite a bumpy ride throughout the season, but I was glad to see him make a few valuable contributions when he did. If I remember correctly, those three games that everyone considered the PIVOTAL games of the season (the PHX overtime game, and the back-to-back 2OTs in California), Brent Barry played significant roles in all three of them. He gave this team a spark when we needed it most after dropping Game 1 to Denver, hit some huge threes for us once again in Phoenix during the WCF, and played well against Detroits seasoned defense, most particularly his spirited performance in the big Game 7.
Now I know he didn't bring it every single night, I think that's why he is considered a role-player. Robert Horry, Devin Brown, Tony Massenburg, even Rasho and Nazr all fall into this category. They didn't exactly rip up the courts every single game. They pick and choose their spots, just like every role-player is supposed to do. The only players on this team expected to show up EVERY game are Tim, Tony, Manu, and to a lesser extent, Bruce. And even then, Bowen only brings his D-Game every night, and leaves his offense in the locker room for special occasions only.
Give the guy another year before you get ready to lynch him. He played well enough to deserve that much, at least. Who knows, maybe that shooting coach will even help to bring back that 46% 3-pt Barry we all saw in 2003-2004, and nobody will be bitching about him then.
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
Barry's skill set makes him a nice player for the Spurs' offense. Also, he still has enough of a rep as a shooter to help with spacing.
What it comes down to is whether the Spurs want to pare down payroll. If so, moving Barry and going with DBrown as the primary backup swing would be the likely course of action, provided the Spurs are satisfied in regards to his back.

Re-read this thread. Barry gets more love for having done so little in a Spurs uniform (and sucking a lot in the postseason, might I add) in this forum as opposed to AJ and Malik.
All Barry has is a famous father, a dunk contest win from 9 years ago and a humorous personality.
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
I am not debating what anyone sees when they watch Barry play. What I am saying is that you cannot expect role players who play inconsistent minutes with inconsistent line-ups to put up consistent numbers. What you hope for is that when you need them to be there they will be. And, I assert that when the Spurs really needed him, not v. Milwaukee in November or whatever, he came through. When Brown was hurt and Beno was overwhelmed, Barry didn't become Hedo.

OK. Who is available that the Spurs could realistically add, that you would rather have on the bench?
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
I'm not arguing that he should be moved. I am simply pointing out how ridiculous it is that Barry gets so much support from this forum for so little.

Fair point. But he also gets crucified by many.

I for one will be extremely happy if Brent does exactly what he did last year again this year.
If he gets beat out by Devin Brown again he'll definitely need to be traded. Just like Malik and Rasho if this season turns out like the last playoffs -- too much money for too little PT.

Yeah, as much as we virtual GMs love the idea of having great depth, it's not going to happen.
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
Spurs only go eight deep when it counts.

Re: Brent Barry on the block?
In the Finals Barry was key in showing the Spurs really need a seasoned veteran backup PG after Beno folded under pressure. But he should really only be playing spot minutes at PG. The "Manu off the bench" move was for his confidence and a spark off the bench and also because Devin was hurt and couldn't fill that role. Did Barry redeem himself? Maybe. I would probably keep him unless there is some spectacular trade in the works. It's one more player returning from the championship team.

Re: Brent Barry on the block?
I'm new to this Spurs Forum so I just wanted to make sure that people know that I am NOT one of those fans who seems to relish in bashing our own players. I never did understand that. Some people seem to actually hope that players fail.
I don't. In fact, I hate to see that we are in a position to have to move Rasho. He gets his fair share of bashing around here. But, $$ is a part of this equation and because of us not being able to pick up Scola, Rasho is the odd man out. We are a little stockpiled in that spot w/Oberto coming over.
As a Spurs fan, I want Brent Barry to redeem himself and hit the open jumpers and do well. Why wouldn't I ? I was thrilled when we picked him up last year. It's just that his contract and performance make him a good candidate to move on. We can get the same production based on his 2004 performance for much less than we are paying him.
At one point during the playoffs, Brent's brother was shooting a higher percentage from 3 land and was just more aggressive on both ends of the court. What's he worth ? 1 mil a season as compared to Brent's 6 or so per year.
It will be interesting to see how the rest of the off season plays out.

The 2 year before we signed him...he averaged 10PPG playing 30 and 33 minutes per game...
That was as a starter...he moved to the bench and played 21 minutes per game....
Exactly how were you expecting him to increase his PPG totals in fewer minutes coming off the bench?
Other than Manu...the All Star...who was the last Spurs player to average 12-14 PPG off the bench?
We haven't ever had anyone average 14 PPG off the bench...in the history of the team...and I don't think we've had anyone average 12 PPG off the bench other than Manu....maybe we did back in the days when we scored 115 PPG..but I doubt it.
This makes your expectations kind of fucked...stop taking your lack of knowledge out on Barry.

I read the whole thing and still get your point. No one has shown love for the Barry since soon after he started playing. The reason I say that is because no one disagrees with you that he did not perform consistantly as he should have. But all you have done(along with some others) is just bashed him. Some even recommende that we cut him. That is stupidity. All I ever did was support Barry as a guy who can be very valuable. That is not showing love. That is supporting a guy who has proven he can be a very solid player. If we can get a younger three point shooting player in a trade, I would be all for it. I hope we are not considering trading him in a S&T for one of the guys we have been talking about signing, because they aren't worth his money.
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
The point is that Brent Barry gets more love in here than is warranted, especially given how much AJ and Malik are dumped on in here.
Re: Brent Barry on the block?
Hate to tell you this, but Malik is not dumped on. There are a few posters who disliked Malik. Many disliked his contract. But in large Malik gets way more love than Barry ever will here.

Just to prove it, you find all the posts that were started in reference to love of Barry and I will find all the posts that were started in reference to love of Rose. And we will compare.
