AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
Jesus fuck.
I keep trying to find different ways to trim possible reasons for going over my data plan each month, but to no fucking avail. I recently upgraded to 6GB/mo, and month before last, I still went over 3 GB, at $15 a pop. The ONLY thing I do that I know eats away at it is I stream Pandora 4-5 times a week at the gym for about an hour or so. Other than that, I'm either at home on my wifi or using my phone sparingly at the office.
I called some stupid At&t customer service c.unt earlier today, and she had no idea what the fuck she was talking about. Insisted iPhone 5's are some of the worst for using data (even though a rep at an At&t store just yesterday told me just the opposite). Said that I should turn iMessage off, and that Push Notifications can go against my data plan, too, even if I'm ON wifi.
I have no idea what the fuck to do. Any ideas aside from switching to a network with unlimited?
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
maybe put some MP3's in your iPhone instead of streaming music in the gym?
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
Nothing on wifi should count against your data, tbh. My brother has a 5c and works for the city water dept driving around town and uses less than 3GB per month. I'd try turning off Location Services before iMessage.
I did find this, even though it is a bit old:

and this, I have heard it works for AT&T people too:

What version of iOS are you using?

I have 4GB of music in my library, with around 100 songs on the Cloud.

I use iOS 7.1.2.
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
You can track data usage app by app and even system services, and even disable certain apps from using the cellular network entirely. Check this article here:
http://9to5mac.com/2013/09/25/ios-7-...ar-data-usage/
You can also try disabling Background App refresh for certain apps and see if that also cuts down on your cellular data usage:

LOL. Where do you think that light comes from if not from the net?

Shut them down. Most apps nowadays will send back to the mothership 'usage metrics' for marketing. If an app shouldn't be talking to the interwebs, or you want them to only talk when you're on Wi-Fi, then shut them down.
That should reduce your usage a bunch.
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
Even with all that....I still can't fathom 9 GB of data usage with background data usage.
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
Tmobile plust hotspot plus Fiddler hacked version = unlimited hotspot tbh. I had used 140 gigs plus last month.
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
I left Att two years ago because of overages. It's literally the biggest fraud..I'd be paying $75-$100 more.
Re: AT&T iPhone 5 Data Overages
This is seriously one of the most obvious scams going, tbh.... I got switched from a pre-2010 unlimited plan that I was grandfathered into, and suddenly my data usage magically started doubling in a month's time, leading to more $$$ in their pockets.... talk about blatant price-gouging!

I'm trying to shut down anything that has no business data'ing. The service rep told me to turn off data each time I go back to my apt and want to be connected to WiFi, but that seems like an extra step I shouldn't have to remember each day.
I dunno. Fuck me.

Yeah, no, that's BS. Just make sure to monitor for a couple weeks which apps are using too much cellular data, and see if you can just keep some of them wi-fi only. I mean, turning them off from that screen just turns off celullar usage, they still work over wifi. I'm sure you'll nail it down. Plus the reduced cell data usage should improve your battery life.

Yeah, it didn't sound like legitimate advice. I'll keep a closer eye and hopefully I can figure this ish/the culprits out.
Thanks, El.

Me either. I would imagine it's sending cellular while he's on wifi, but I don't know how. Just the only explanation I can think of. Fpoonsie, do you have an Apple Store close? I have 4 iPhones on AT&T and 15GB data and we rarely go over 3-4 GB/mo.

Yeah, somewhat close. One in downtown Dallas is around 45 mins away and Southlake, same.

It may be a longer process, but I would try taking it there and explaining what happened. If they blow you off you can probably call in and get it replaced saying they blew you off. They are sensitive to those kinds of complaints. It sounds like a hardware issue to me.

I think that's what I'll do after work. I always hear horror stories of having to deal with the "geniuses," but I'm all outta ideas, aside from El's suggestions.

Switch to a gym with wifi, also see if your gym has wifi
