They were conquered by Genghis who went a bit genocide but Kiev as a principality has a very long history. Much better identity than the stuff east of the Balkans. It's similar to Hungary and Poland both of which are our NATO allies and who were also raped by the Mongols and part of the iron curtain.

What is going on is a landgrab on a former soviet satellite. Land already has been grabbed. The people supporting the Russians are pretty disappointing if you want to talk about historical and national pride.

Slavs are comrades. Many Slavs died fighting on the German side against Stalin, taking revenge against their communist tormentors. In many cases, just the message that the Wehrmacht was approaching was enough to pop it off and they wouldn't even wait for the Germans to get there.
