Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp

Quote:
The former Syracuse University star confirmed Friday that he had been invited to a workout with the reigning NBA champions. Warrick will have his workout with the Spurs on Sept. 1.
Warrick, who played at Syracuse from 2001 to 2005, spent eight years in the NBA. The Memphis Grizzlies took him with the 19th pick in the 2005 NBA draft. In addition to the Grizzlies, the 6-foot-9 forward has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, the Chicago Bulls, the Phoenix Suns, the New Orleans Hornets and the Charlotte Bobcats. However, he last played in the NBA during the 2012-13 season with the Bobcats.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
I actually like Warrick a lot. I hope he still has something left, because he can be a legit power-forward, which is something only Diaw can say right now.

I'd rather take a 3rd shot at Mal Thomas. He's on a non-guaranteed contract with Cleveland, and may be thrown into the big trade, and later cut.

Cleveland can't package him in this upcoming trade. I agree that I would like to see Thomas back in Silver and Black over a retread. It was a mistake to not just like Malcolm try playing the three before cutting him for Jeffers.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
ive always liked him, he probably wont make the team though. better than ayres
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
he's not to bad tbh, he rather strong for his size and can penetrate to the rim great for a big man.
good competition between him and bynes

How about we dump that bum Ayres off the team and keep both of them? I would not mind. If he is not bad then he is light years ahead of Ayres.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
He challenges every shot at the rim. Already an upgrade from Ayres.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
By the way, there's been a lot of talk about the Spurs potentially adding another big recently. I wonder if that means there's a possible trade coming up. Maybe there's a two-for-one or even three-for-one deal being discussed that would send out Ayres, Daye and even Beli for an impact player. Then, the Spurs would have room to bring Baynes back and/or add a PF.

Signing Warrick might be it.

More likely cause Baynes is going back to Europe.

Warrick, Green, Capela, even rumors about Milicic. The point to me is that the team is pursuing players at their deepest position for some reason.

Part of the reason, for sure. But with the team needing PG depth and having six bigs on the roster not counting Baynes, I'm skeptical.

Capela? Is Houston shopping him?
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Warrick is still in the league?
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
If the guy wouldn't play except for garbage time, I'd rather see a youngster like Green get a shot. I'm not against vets per se since I always thought Kevin Willis didn't get enough playing time--and he went on to play another couple of years after he left the Spurs--but we've kinda gotten away from the old vet syndrome and been pretty successful.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Looks like Baynes is gone..
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
What else can he do except dunk?

Not necessarily. The Spurs can make room pretty easily. It's not like Daye/Errors contracts are hard to move if they would rather keep Warrick and Baynes. Furthermore, Baynes and Warrick play different positions. Daye would most likely be the one to go if they decided to keep Warrick.

He wasn't last year. He last played in the NBA during 2012-2013.

Probably. But I meant that they gave him a promise even though he was expecting to come over this season.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Did he even play last season? If we get ride of Errors he would be a big upgrade from him but if we are keeping Errors then no.

:lol I know that he refused to sign that letter saying he wasn't coming over this year. Morey is a dumb shit if he didn't find that out in advance.

Haven't heard his name in ages tbh
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
So at this point he is not coming to training camp.

Agreed, its Baynes insurance.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
An athletic american black player that can dunk, the wet dream of most of the st posters. But at 32, a monkeyballer probably at the same stage that Duncan will be at 42.

Warrick. It's just a workout.
Sounds more like a Josh Howard/Raja Bell type deal than anything else.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
He was invited for a workout. That's not even a camp invite. Could just as easily be the Spurs getting Warrick's name out there to help him revive his career. They've done that before.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Another big man. It's strange. Back when the Spurs had terrible depth at the four and five, Pop couldn't get enough of bringing in small guards. Now that the team actually needs a guard, he's bringing in a bunch of bigs. And this whole time, Kawhi STILL doesn't have a viable backup who isn't starting next to him.
Spurs crazy, yo.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Team "needs" aren't much of anything at this mioment.
No one being brought in is expected to make the team. Just pencil all the invites onto the Toros roster.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
i always liked warrick, but for some reason it feels like he hasn't played basketball in 4 years... so i'm not sure how i feel about this. i'd rather just hear the news that baynes has accepted his QO

He had a mid range game and could score around the basket. Other than that he does nothing else. Defensively, Warrick is completely useless and doesn't provide much on the boards.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
One of the worst defenders in the league in his prime. Imagine, now.

Not too interested then if he is as poor as you say that he is on defense.
Also, Sept. 1st is nowhere near training camp. That's not a training camp invite. I'm pretty sure the Spurs did something similar with other players last off season. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I recall them working out James Johnson last off season and he wasn't signed or even invited to training camp.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Save for the athleticism, he's the total opposite of Stromile Swift
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Is he the one Charles Barkley compared to a deer?
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
He looks like Ayres in those highlights

I don't know much about either player. What are their best attributes? What areas are they opposite in?

offense/defense. Swift is an athletic shot-blocker while Warrick has 0 defense but has a better offensive game than most big men.

Thanks, appreciate it.
So if the Spurs are looking at Warrick, it seems they're looking at offense. How about defense? I wonder, does Pop still value defense more than offense or has he moved towards offense as a bigger priority?

Where have you heard that? It's interesting.

So Warrick is a poor man's JJ Hickson?

Spurs crazy, yo.
Like you say Green is the best/main option, but they still think that Belli as SF backup is a good option? On Durant? Really crazy.

Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Well Denzel got nice size.
-
Re: Hakim Warrick to Join Spurs Training Camp
Hasheem Thabeet has been traded to the Sixers, who are expected to waive him ASAP. I'd rather take a flier on him than Warrick but that isn't saying much, tbh.
