We aren't really an educated country. We are a country run by educated people, but the large majority of the people you see doing stupid shit are not educated, and likely never even registered to vote.

Even last night Obama starts out correctly stating we're a nation of laws, but, then grabbed the can of gasoline and threw it on. This isn't a "secret trial" to find guilt of innocence. A grand jury hears evidence to determine whether there is enough evidence to even charge someone with a crime. All they are looking for is probable cause. If they find probable cause, they recommend charging a suspect with those particular crimes in which they found probable cause to do so.

If they would have found probable cause and charged him, then a jury trial would follow to determine if he was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

One step (grand jury) leads to the other (criminal jury trial).

Deputy who shot dog indicted on animal cruelty charge

The former Rains County deputy fired for shooting and killing a dog during a burglary call has been indicted on a felony animal cruelty charge.

Ex-deputy Jerrod Dooley said although the Australian blue heeler named Candy was barking as he drove up, he believed the dog was friendly.

Candy was in the back of owner Cole Middleton's pick up and Dooley said it wasn't until he got out of his patrol unit that the dog jumped out of the pickup and charged him.

Gunshots cannot be heard on the dash cam video, but you can hear the dog cry out after it was shot.

Dooley said he fired two shots – missing on the first attempt. A report from a veterinarian after the shooting determined Candy was shot in the back of the head.

Candy’s owner, Middleton, is a third generation dairy farmer and said Candy was needlessly shot by the deputy.

Dooley’s lawyer, Pete Schulte, has previously said he thought the shooting was justified and said Dooley’s lack of training from the department was a factor in the shooting.

As a matter of fact, they rarely even present all the evidence (that's what the actual trial is for), and indictments are granted everyday for much smaller crimes than this one. A lot of times, not even a grand jury is convened. Now, I'm not saying what was done here was improper, but the fact that a cop was involved very likely has a lot to do with how this case was handled by the prosecution. Anyhow, this was discussed in the Political forum a while ago, we can resume the conversation there if you want.

It only went to trial because the prosecutor felt pressured by the public, he knew the case had no shot but it was done to appease his constituents, thats why there was no indictment.

The dude signed his tombstone when he stole the box of cigars imo. Had he been an innocent pedestrian he might have has more.sympathy from police investigators. Since he was a thief all other testimony was thrown out. Simple

He still assaulted a cop and tried to grab his gun. The victims scream "he was shot for jay-walking/shop-lifting" but he was really shot for assaulting a police officer, grabbing his gun and then charging at him again.

You're right, it is extremely rare to not get an indictment. My best guess is that the prosecutor, on his own, was not going to press charges; but because of the sensitivity of the incident having racial undertones and media scrutiny, and because of his own personal experiences (his father was a police officer killed in the line of duty), (again my best guess) is that he sent it to a grand jury so any perceived bias would be removed, or at least tempered.

In this country u do that and u have a pretty high chance of getting shot by police.

Do that shit in other countries like Argentina and you most definitely will get a bullet to the back of the head.i seen it with my very own eyes and nobody said shit about it.

I'm pretty sure if Argentine robbers families try to protest about it they will be the laughingstock of the nation.

I currently serve on a grand jury and I can assure you, we see all of the evidence. A prosecutor does not have to call on the grand jury, he/she can decide on their own to prosecute. McCollough decided to present this to a grand jury because of the national attention of the case.

You are also missing the point

Nobody is disputing what the officer knew at the time. Point is the police investigators and prosecutors knew the boy was a thief. Thus why they didn't even try to get to the bottom of it.
