Yeah, he is but he's a pretty bad NBA player. Think his career might be over tbh.

His career in the NBA is over. He should try to find a job in China "a la Marbury".

Daye needs to spend time paying his dues overseas. I think he may have taken it too easy given his privileged upbringing. He hasn't seen hardship.

What's the story there?

He did mention in one piece that he grew up with Klay Thompson. So he was in the circle of families with Dad's who played in the NBA.

Yeah. This is always the part that sucks about sport. His NBA dreams could be over.

Yeah I remember seeing a video where he mentioned that. Was wondering what his parents did though since 6'11'' dudes don't grow on trees.
edit: apparently his dad Darren Daye played 5 seasons in the NBA

He's 26 years old and has earned $10 million. I wish him luck but I won't feel too bad for him if his playing days are over.

His Dad (being a Spurs fan) is definitely big time disappointed.
The Spurs however needed to make a decision quickly.
J.Green was D-League player of the month and his had like 10 consecutive double-doubles. Several teams were interested in his services.
The two players at the end of the bench were Daye and Ayres. If you waive Ayres and Green doesn't pan out, then you are less one big man come playoff time. If you waive Daye, Spurs still have Bonner who plays the same stretch 4 role.
Bonner should have been in the equation but unfortunately Daye hasn't outplayed him.
If Daye doesn't get picked up from waivers, then his NBA career would virtually be over.
Possibly the wolves take him, after all in the 2 games he played against them, he got double-doubles.

Re: Spurs waive Austin Daye
There is a spot on the end of a NBA bench for Austin somewhere...Most waved players from the Spurs
find a spot somewhere at least a season....

Re: Spurs waive Austin Daye
He got to witness the most dominant playoff run in NBA history and got a free ring out of it. I wouldn't hate that.

Wouldn't say going 7 games against an 8 seed as the "most dominant playoff run", but certainly dominant in The Finals and against the Guests.
-
Re: Spurs waive Austin Daye
Spurs obliterated the back to back champs so bad the team broke up. That just wasn't dominant it was ruthless. And we loved every minute.
-
Re: Spurs waive Austin Daye
Worst case scenario for Daye is he goes to Europe/China and plays... that's not a bad life.

They had the most games won by 15+ in playoff history so I would say yes that is pretty dominant.

To make it worse, probably he spent his Money partying and shit. Judging by his cars... Money waster.

In contrast, Jamychal Green is dirt poor. Never got drafted, so never got a NBA rookie salary. He played his entire career in the D-league, picking up a $30,000 salary per year. He couldn't even afford the 2011 Range Rover with his yearly salary.
I think Green also has a kid already, so he's got responsibilities beyond what Daye can even fantom.

Big relief Ayres was kept!

J Green also earned some guaranteed money in training camp. Teams usually give about $50K. Doesn't sound like much, but it's more than a d-league annual salary. That's probably the reason that the Spurs went to the top of the list when it was time to pick which callup he wanted to accept.

He hasn't played his entire career in the D-League.

Ok... he played in France for one season.
He got several 10 day contracts from teams in the past 3 years.
Still, he's still dirt poor.

Okay.... so let's assume the Spurs gave $50K for the Summer League action, and then he has his salary of $30k. Max is $80K... not enough to afford Daye's Mercedes.
Relative to NBA players, he's made less than 1/10th that of a rookie salary. That $490K figure doesn't have any basis in reality.

Re: Spurs waive Austin Daye
bye!
Nah he seemd like a pretty cool dude, but just with no nba calibur basketball skills, I do wish him luck though there might still be a team out there that he could fit with.

It's also important to remember that his net worth is nowhere near $10 million. That's his gross career earnings, but people in his tax bracket have a tremendous federal income tax liability.
He earned $1.6 million his first year in the league, but he had to pay $600,000 in federal income tax alone on that (assuming he filed single), so his take home is roughly around $1M.
I just went through a list of his year-by-year earnings and as a rough, back-of-the-napkin estimate his career take home pay is around $5.7M. That still makes him well off assuming he didn't pull a DeJuan Blair with money. Given that, I can see him comfortably affording those 3 cars but he's pushing it. First of all, his net worth is even less than $5.7M because he's been spending money all of these years to live. His liquid net worth is even less than that because he needs to buy a house (or rent).
Even if he had $5.7M in liquid net worth (which he doesn't), that would still only comfortably generate around $300,000/year in investment income which is good but it's upper middle class territory, and given that he's so young he needs this money to last him 40 or 50 years so his margin for error in the stock market is fairly thin.
