'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
According to Gervin, Thompson didn't break his record.
"I'd like to see him try to get 33 or 37 in a quarter when there wasn't no three-point line," Gervin said. "I don't feel—and it's funny, everybody laughs—I don't feel he broke my record," Gervin told Howard Beck of Bleacher Report. "I feel he set a new record. He set a new record for the new NBA.
"Think about it, man. That's like if we're going to have a race, and you start on the 50-yard line and I start on the 1-yard line and we're doing a 100-yard race. It's not even."
The NBA did not adopt a 3-point line until the 1979-80 season.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
Nobody really mentioned that when they talked about this record on Sportscenter.
But the question you have to ask is, could Gervin have taken advantage of the 3-point line if it had existed in his time?

Based on what I saw, yes.
As far as stats go, he hit .417 one year from three and he was a career .844 shooter from the FT line.
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
Simple math. Give Klay 2 pts for his 3s and he comes up short. I still think they should count all shots before half court as 4 pts.
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
The question on my mind - is it harder to make 3's vs layups/midrange?
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
Layups have to get by bugs and might land on floor
Three point shots most of the time you do not land on floor

I believe the research says the expected value is higher for 3s, especially corner 3s, than for most 2-point shots.
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
Klay Thompson won't ever get close to the kind of scoring machine Gervin was.
So it's a fun stat I guess but also misleading.
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
First thing I thought of when the record was broken.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
it's stupid though, if you're pointing out that it's totally different because basketball changed as a sport with the institution of the three point line then doesn't the road run both ways? Your record is no longer applicable to the sport we play today? So your record is what, fucking ETERNAL now if any of those points higher than your total come from the three point line? Dudes gotta play like it's 1978?
I love the Iceman but I'm always not-down with old basketball players bitching and moaning about contemporary trends and players (it's getting even fucking worse with dudes from the 90s or dudes STILL in the league like Kobe, back in my day blahblahblahblah grit heart DANG THESE STATS!!!) and I'm not really changing that opinion because he happens to be a Spur. Retired players unable to play anymore, stuck in the past, just grasping at whatever they can in the present, often diminishing the achievements of contemporary players, whatever dude stop shouting at me to get off your lawn.
You better believe this just makes him look like a petty hater to all the non-Spurs NBA fans unless they're specialized fetishizers of the past or fucking Bill Simmons. :rolleyes Like sorry dude, I'm pretty sure most of those glorious classic Celtics teams would look like old men on the court in today's NBA. :lol
And before you start ranting about monkeyball vs. b-ball IQ and all that bullshit, we wouldn't be anywhere in this current era without Kawhi Leonard's athleticism and physical abilities so you can stick that racist Eurotrash bullshit right back up your ass (UUUHHH YOU'RE RUNNING FASTER AND JUMPING HIGHER IN THIS SPORT OF BASKETBALL, HOW DARE YOU FILTHY AMERICANS!!!!! WHAT WE ARE BAD AT IS CLEARLY CHEAP AND DUMB!!!!). Except for a set number of old legends (including admittedly dudes like the Iceman, and obviously Wilt was enough of a unique specimen to own the top athletes of today's age) a lot of those dudes would get totally owned by today's athletes.
Retired athletes just need to be able to nod, smile, and go, "Not bad young fella". Keep that petty "BUT WAIT A MINUTE!!!!!" shit to yourself dude. There's a reason it's funny. There's a reason everyone laughs.

Basketball without 3-pointers isn't really basketball, tbh..
The last time I played on the street and the 3-point line on one side of the court was worn off, so these niggas wanted to play without 3s..I literally sat out, that's not real basketball:lol..this isn't the fucking 70s:lmao..

He rode that record for all it was worth even during the "new NBA". Old stars living on entitlement, hangers on. They annoy the fuck out of me. If you judge them by the same rules then Thompson only had 30 points. I get what Gervin's saying. It's moot because the current NBA wants new 'record breakers.'
I would love to get my hands on a copy of that quarter from Ice to judge them head to head.

I think it depends on the build of the shooter. Layups are obviously easier than either. But I think 3 pointers from the top are easier for most guards than short jumpers. Especially from the sides. Someone else can maybe talk about the mechanics. But seems that there is much less adjustment and control involved in shooting a three that mid range jumpers where one has to hold back more or less depending on the exact distance.
For a long body, I think maybe the short jumper is easier.

no...there's no way they need to have 2 different records for post and pre 3 point arc. It's too much. It's just for points in a quarter anyway. Just a portion of one game. And if you start there, then you end up 2 records for all kinds of shit. Career points scored. Then you have to deal with players that played in both eras. And then you have players from the old era complaining because maybe the distance on a large portion of their points was from beyond the arc and they would have had way more points. Then you move on to make different records for lengths of seasons or changes in defensive rules. So and so would have scored way more in the pre flop rule era. or whatever.

Yeah, exactly. I don't see why so many people are getting so emotional about this. Gervin doesn't seem mad, or bitter, or "salty" at all to me. He's pointing out a simple fact about the differences and-- if you read the whole article-- saying very complimentary things about Klay.
-
Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
Who says Gervin doesn't go 0-5 from three if he tried to in that game? There's no need to point out the differences - everyone knows the 3 point line was introduced in 1979. It's never been a point to credit/discredit new records.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
League averaged a 114 ppg back then as oppose to 100 now.
Iceman's team lost that game while he was going for the scoring record whereas Klay's changed the game completely over the Kings.
Klay's was more impressive.

I love George, but he should just congratulate Klay and move on. Holding any record in the NBA for nearly 40 years is a huge feat.
Doesn't he have any PR guys who can suggest the 3 point thing? Shouldn't come from the man himself.

I agree, he sounds salty as many said by talking about this here and saying it should not count. Congrats and move on. I think he never thought it would be broken and then when it was just could not take it and had to speak out on it for some reason? I don't get it I thought he would be more classy than that and say good for him and say I held it for a while and so on but he came off as kind of it is not broken and can't accept it.

Exactly.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
even if some big-man broke the record without taking a 3, he would probably whine about how "i dont feel like my record was broken, defenses were a lot tougher and they didnt call as many fouls back then"

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
Another argument for Gervin......back in the 70's and 80's, goonery and thuggery was so prevalent in the NBA with the big men, players driving to the hoop literally would get shanked by a big with nothing more than a nod and a wink from the refs.

Honestly this is like a father v. son contests. Back in the day... This has turned quite interesting. I always wished I had lived in the 60's early 70's. Imagine the old WWII vet having a discussion with a kid refusing to go to Vietnam. I think we need another "generation gap".
Shaq and Barkley are reverting to old man form, which at times can be entertaining.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
This discussion has devolved in to some sort of (us vs. them) or (past vs. current) - and I'm partly guilty of taking it that direction, but it should be about rules. Klay Thompson's performance was nothing short of amazing. He was perfect! 13-13, 9-9 on threes and 2-2 from FT line. No one can take that away from him and he is in the record books for 37 pts. in a quarter. Even better for his team, almost every one of those points was necessary and helped his team.
All that being said, I can see how George Gervin feels he still owns "A" record because there were no 3 ptrs back when he claimed it the first time. Klay got an extra 9 bonus points from behind the arc. Ok, so give Ice the asterisk. I don't think he's bitter or salty, I think he had a valid point.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
As a huge Gervin fan, it really doesn't matter. Galileo and I know that Ice still owns the record for most points scored between the middle of the third until the middle of the fourth quarter during a weekend game. :p:
Seriously, I wonder how fans, media and players would react if Klay scored 101 points in today's three-point happy NBA. Great accomplishment for sure, but don't think there wouldn't be an asterisk next to it.

Tbh, the record don't care about what Gervin feels tbh.
Record still gonna show Klay as the top scorer for a single quarter.

Re: 'Iceman' Gervin: 'I don't feel' Klay 'broke my record'
I never cared much for records that were intentionally broken in basketball (other than winning). When you leave a guy out there and run your offense through him just to get him some record recognition (David's 71 pts to seal the scoring title) it defeats the purpose of the record. Now you have the tail wagging the dog. That's not what happened with Klay, otherwise Kerr plays him in the 4th as well. If you're not trying to win a championship, what are you trying to do?
