Was there ever a better defensive front court than TD and DROB?

I'm talking just the 4,5 position.

Doesn't say much when Shaq runs a train through those two to a 3peat.

Asik and Anthony Davis.

I think you could make the case that DRob was in his prime in 99. Or at least at the tail end of it. Duncan got hurt the next season, and after that DRob was never the same. But in 1999 his averages were 15 and 10 with 2.5 blocks per. Most likely would have been much higher had he not given Tim the reins.

99 twin towers > all and swept Shaq/Kobe, I still believe that team can give 2001 Lakers competition.

After that DRob was never the same, 00-02 Spurs had aging wings similar to 08-11, Duncan still played Shaq very well, if you look at his stats he was very even against Shaq in 01 and 02. But Spurs had no answer for Kobe until Bowen, Parker and Ginobili came to play.

Laimbeer and Rodman?

Duncan was hurt and didn't play in 2000, and by 2001 the Spurs backcourt was rebuilding. People forget Mario Elie was a great defender and he had a certain toughness and physical style the Spurs did not have before Ahem Del Negro.

That 99 team would let guys get to the baseline and then just smother them. Opponents got in deep underneath, leaned out because they were point blank at the rim, and then promptly got their shit packed. That was one hell of a defensive team. I loved how we ran at guys forcing them to face the duo. Then David's back went bad. Never the same player.

It was an amazing feeling to know a game would be close with 3 or 4 minutes to go, knowing the other team would be lucky to get another bucket the rest of the game. Duncan and DRob were amazing.

Elvin Hayes and Wes Unseld (Bullets) and Dave Cowens and Paul Silas (Celtics) in the 70s were really tough defensive front court players too.

Those 2000 to 2002 Spurs backcourts were so disgusting, tbh..ugh..

It's a shame that people forget how bad the Spurs' perimeter players were when discussing the Shaq-Kobe Lakers killing the Spurs..

Worst defender the Spurs ever had. I remember Kobe averaged 38PPG on him that season and every opposing shooting guard in the league murdered the Spurs. Even Steve Smith, Vinny Del Negro, Marco Belinelli were far superior defenders.

Who was Shaq not running through at the time? He was a one man wrecking crew out there, the most dominant player on the planet at the time and too big to stop. The Spurs threw alot at him and did the best they could and slowed him down at times (Not many) and they were the ones who ended that threepeat run so.... They also were the ones who won and beat them before their threepeat run so they were the only ones to beat LA then. They had their hands full with Shaq but were able to beat them twice.

Duncan went toe to toe everytime in PPG and so on, even had more rebounds if I remember right? He was up there with Shaq in those years dominating, his team around him was just not that great though so they fell short in 01-02. Duncan was going off in games though, I remember one he had around 40 points and 20 some odd rebounds in 02 playoffs against them. He was a MONSTER.

Robinson was playing the game with slipped discs against a guy in his prime. Shaq could barely move when his body started to break down. I'd like to see DRob go against Shaq today on set at TNT. He's probably still in good enough shape to own O'Neal.

Shaq averaged almost 30pts 15rbs a game during the threepeat playoffs. No one does that these days, may never do it again. There's no "big steal" in a game otherwise.

During the 00 ring, Kobe averaged 21 a game in the playoffs. He was no slouch, and the next two years he'd up that average. In 03, he led all scorers with 32 a game, but lost. That's what happens when you go away from the most unstoppable force since Wilt.

It doesn't matter who was injured or when. You're either the best frontcourt or you aren't. If you won the ring, you probably were.

IMO opinion, the best pair was Wes Unseld and Elvin Hayes, with Moses Malone and Caldwell Jones a close second.

I would take 2003 Duncan over 1995 Olajuwon, took a worse team than the 95 rockets to the title over Shaq/Kobe Lakers.

Near end of prime Robinson/2nd year Duncan > 3rd year Samson/2nd year Olajuwon.

If i remember correctly, statistically Duncan - Rasho duo was better defensively

but the league as a whole was worse. We beat the nets in the finals. The nets are one of the worst teams to ever make the nba finals. Kobe and shaq fueding is what helped us that series too. And Horry missing that wide open 3 at the end of game 5.

The Spurs did better than anyone else on a Prime Shaq, so I don't know what the fuck a lot of people here are talking about. I thought the Spurs held down a dominant Shaq pretty well. It was Kobe that went off on our perimeter players that was the difference. Spurs did a very good job on Shaq who was really dominant back then.
