Always good when you can move on to plan B after successfully completing plan A and then successfully complete plan B.
Re: Has David West Officially Signed Yet?
Really excited about West. Have watched him since he was a great player at Xavier. While he was with the Hornets he bothered me, but that's because he was playing the Spurs. From what I've seen, and judging by his stats, his defense has improved with age.
Re: Has David West Officially Signed Yet?
Looks like it's a 2 years contract with a player option on the second year:
http://basketball.realgm.com/nba/free_agent_options
It's the logical contract to give at a player taking such a paycut. If he has some career ending injury, it would allow him to get $3M from Spurs.
Some side notes:
- It looks also like the 4th year of Green's contract is a player option.
- Spurs are $620K above the tax (without including Reggie Willaims non guaranteed contract). The only way to go under would be a midseason trade.
- Spurs made the choice to go over the tax by signing Bonner as 14th player. When you include his salary, the luxury tax and the tax redistribution, it's a signing that cost Spurs' owner $5M.
- Adding a vet as 15th player with an one year min salary would cost $2.5M to Spurs.
Re: Has David West Officially Signed Yet?
I'm wondering if he even wants to play longer than this season and if it's planning on making this season his last? I don't recall what article it was as I read it very early on in the free agency period, and I don't know if it was just his agent speculating, but he made it sound like that he didn't plan on playing much longer. His agent said (I think it was his agent) something along the lines of that David seems like he made a decision years ago that he'd retire at around 36 and that money doesn't mean as much to him right now as trying to win does, so that is why he was looking at only playing for teams that he feels have a chance to win it and play a part in it.
Edit : Just read what Bruno posted above, so maybe West will consider playing on after this upcoming season.
I certainly hope he plays longer than his season if he's still OK physically, and I also hope the Spurs bring him back next season at a higher salary. I really do like his game and toughness. I've been pretty much starving for the Spurs to get a player with his kind of toughness for years. I loved having Kevin Willis is 2003 and Tony Massenburg in 2005. David brings that kind of toughness, but at this stage of his career he's still a much better player than both of those guys were when they joined the Spurs. I'm really happy that he signed with the Spurs. I can't wait to see West out there on the court.
David, Tim and Danny I am extremely grateful to them for the monetary sacrifices they have made this off-season to help the Spurs put together the roster they have so far. It wouldn't have been possible without those 3 doing what they did. Also I can't forget Kawhi willing to wait another year before getting him contract, that made a huge difference too.

That seems odd to me, he just turned 35. He should have two seasons left in the tank. Maybe a third, given how so many "bigs" play later and later into their 30's now.

I found the article.

“It’s amazing, but it’s true,” said Jeff Austin, West’s agent. “When David opted out of his contract, he told me this could perhaps be his last year, and he was not going to let money be the factor in determining where he plays. He was going to make his
decision based on the best opportunity to win and the best fit for him.”
I'm really happy to have him, so I certainly hope that he'd consider playing beyond this upcoming season. His agent did say "perhaps" in the article, so that's good enough for me.

I want to see them get a ring for West now, worse than I wanted them to get one for Finley.
Shelling out $5M of real-world money for Bonner is amazing. That's a commitment to getting #6 this year. Not that Bonner is a major piece, but it says they aren't holding anything back.

Seems most media focused on the first part but this was the true difference after he gave up the money. Considering gsw and cavs were both interested in him.

And thank Manu also -

Shams Charania @ShamsCharania
David West's San Antonio Spurs contract now includes a second year at his option, sources tell RealGM. Of course, he assuredly opts out.

This also gives cover for when he opts out and resigns for a larger amount. Indicates there wasn't any wink-winking going on, when there probably was.

Thanks for the math. I thought even w/ Bonner SA might be able to sneak in under the tax, but I guess not. Props to everyone involved, from Holt to West for doing what's best for the team and business. Everyone is on the same page and the results have been beautiful.
I personally (assuming Reggie has been waived) hope SA doesn't add a 15th player. Mainly because it's probably worth the wait until buyout time, but also because there isn't anyone outside of Bonner (not a knock on him) that I want on the inactive list. I really truly hope that both Simmons and Kyle are on the active roster every single night and get some minutes (hopefully in blowouts : )

If Spurs believe in Anderson/Simmons and want to give them a fair chance, they have many options:
- Go with 14 players. If they fail, Spurs could then add a vet in the middle of the season.
- Sign an old vet not looking for playing time. If they are doing fine, he would sit on the inactive list alongside Bonner.
- Sign a vet a to no or partially guaranteed contract. If they are doing fine, he would then be waived.
All 3 options make somewhat some sense. At the end it will depend on the market.
What vet can they get this summer for a guaranteed min contract that will be fine with not playing?
What vet can they get this summer with a non or partially guaranteed contract?
What vet can they get in the middle of the season?

Have the Spurs inked Manu yet? If not, they should still be under the tax. That would leave open the possibility of matching 150 percent of Williams' salary rather than 125. Still don't know who they'd target, but the open is still open.
Also, are you planning on making the salary thread this year?

Very true and a big part of my statement was because I think option number 3 is not only the most realistic but could yeild the most upside (both in terms of player development and level of player available. )
Simmons and KA need to be first priority in this scenario and Spurs have plenty of time to figure things out with them and their level of contribution.

Spurs haven't inked Manu and Simmons
125%+100K of Reggie's salary is $1.58M. 150%+100K is $1.87M
Tradable NBA players between these salaries: Jusuf Nurkic, Lucas Nogueira, Dennis Schroeder, Zoran Dragic, James Young, Pablo Prigioni, Ryan Kelly, Joffrey Lauvergne, Louis Amundson, Tyler Ennis and Sergey Karasev.
Dragic and Karasev are the ones that make the most sense.
However, the most likely scenario, by far is just that Manu is somewhere in Argentina and both sides aren't really in a rush to sign given the level of trust between Spurs and Manu. For Simmons, it's likely that he will have to go to SA at the end of the SL to pass his physical and sign his contract.

I won't and you're doing a great job in the think tank forum. :tu
Re: Has David West Officially Signed Yet?
Bullock wasn't mentioned (apparently, their plan at the moment is to bring him, Martin, Hilliard, Thomas and maybe Granger, to camp and have them compete for the final two spots), but him and Karasev are the most intriguing. Both are capable of defending both wing positions and project as plus three-point shooters and competent defenders.
