Re: Pop gonna coach Africa
Team World gets Paul and the Gasol Bros, and Team Africa gets...Aminu, Biyombo, and Mbah A Moute?
I know they are trying to keep things geographically appropriate, but...seems a little lopsided to me.

Maybe not any more, but I read an article that back when he was on the Suns, he had the highest vertical on the team. Just because he's chubby and getting a little older, don't think Boris isn't an athlete. That's one of the reasons the KA comparisons don't make sense.

Re: Pop gonna coach Africa
I'm not a huge fan of the NBA lumping together the various, diverse countries and ethnic groups that make up the entire continent of Africa into merely "Africa." This homogenization only reinforces the Western world's black and white perception of African reality, and effectively reduces it into a single, solitary unit.

Re: Pop gonna coach Africa
If they are picking players to play for "Team Africa" based on their African lineage then Chris Paul should be on that team since I'm pretty sure he doesn't have Neanderthal DNA unlike the Gasol bros.

Re: Pop gonna coach Africa
for those who are unaware of diaw's vertical:
Quote:
“Boris walks into the gym one day wearing flip-flops and holding his customary cappuccino, which was a staple for him every morning,” Griffin recalled. “It was during pre-draft workouts, so he sees the Vertec [machine] and asks what it is.
“We tell him it measures your vertical leap by determining how many of the bars you can touch. He asks what’s the highest anyone has ever gone, and we tell him Amare’ [Stoudemire] cleared the entire rack.
“Boris puts down the cappuccino, takes off his flip-flops and clears the entire rack on the first try. Then he calmly puts his flip-flops back on, picks up his cappuccino and walks away, saying, ‘That was not difficult.'”

Not to mention the opposing team is 'The WORLD'. If that's not lumping folks together, I dunno what is.
-
Re: Pop gonna coach Africa
They really couldn't get Mudiay in on this? At least if he played, you could have a somewhat convincing SL of him, Deng, Giannis, Ibaka and Dieng.

Yeah, I don't give a fuck about French, African, the Diaws, their names, or where they originated from. Of course all blacks are African somewhere down the line, but I honestly thought this dude was just a French guy.

Many French athletes have North and West African roots.
Like Yannick Noah (Joakim's father), Diaw, Thierry Henry, etc.

Apples to oranges. Europe is a far smaller, more homogeneous continent.
A better comparison would be Asia. The people of East Asia, for instance, have vastly different cultures, traditions, and peoples from those of South Asia. Countries from the former region do not identify with the people from the latter region at all. As such, if the NBA were to hold an NBA Asia game, and lump all the players of various Asian origins into one Team Asia, it would be an awkward fit at best.
-

yes, tell the balkans, the slavs, the scandinavians, and the algo-saxons that they're homogeneous

I said Europe was more homogeneous. I didn't say it was homogeneous.
Besides, you're only making my point for me. You can't just lump together all the people in one continent and homogenize them. But that's exactly what this NBA Africa game is doing.
-
