I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
A declining Hall of Fame big 3 + a pair of stars in their prime + a pretty good bench.. Hope this eerie similarity doesn't play out
(2013-14 Nets actually)

Re: I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
This team is so different from the '13 Nets that it isn't even funny. That Nets team was a bunch of washed-up ballhogs who were all hype and no substance.
This Spurs team is a well established Big 3 which is still going strong (and a single year removed from a title), surrounded by new talent which is team-first and should fit in perfectly with the established system. Throw in a few hungry and budding young athletes (Anderson, Simmons, McCallum) and one of the best coaches of all time.
Obviously, a title is never guaranteed with any team...but if this team draws a single comparison the fucking Brooklyn Nets outside of this thread, I will eat my Tim Duncan All-Star jersey.

Turrible Turrible Turrible.

Re: I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
Actually, given the star power and championship pedigree surrounding our team, a better comparison (at least in terms of hype) would be:

Re: I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
The only thing comparible between the two teams is the color scheme that the Nets copied from the Spurs. Other than that, the Spurs are leagues better.
If the damn `13 Nets were such a super team, it must be really damn painful to still lose early in the Eastern conference playoffs.. :lmao

:cry You dont say that
They were a recollection of cancers, washed up players and a rookie coach, they were so bad that sucked in the east.
This is more like Boston 2008 LMA and Kawhi are in good age, Sam Cassell is Manu, Glenn Davis is Boris, Parker is Rondo, David West Perkins, etc. :lmao

-Joe Johnson was playing w/ planter fasciitis & looked as done as 2014-15 Parker
-KG was mailing in games & can't be compared to Tim
-AK47/JET were done for a couple of seasons before the Nets signed them
-Teletovic was a rookie specializing in shooting air-balls to start out the season
-Kidd was learning how to coach on the fly & had to resort to spilling drinks on the court
-Deron was hobbled w/ a variety of ankle injures & Lopez was out for the season
.....even then after the all-star break they were rolling once Kidd figured out the team & Livingston moved into the starting lineup. Had they been healthy they would have given the Heat a run for their money instead they had to depend on Blatche, lol! The current Spurs squad is more similar to the 84-85 Lakers than the 13-14 Nets:
-Pop/Riley
-Tim/Kareem
-(Kawhi+Manu)+SlowMo/Magic
-LMA/Worthy
-Danny/Cooper
-Tony/Scott
-D-West/McAdoo
-Bobo/Rambis
-Patty/McGee
-
Re: I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
There is virtually nothing comparable between these Spurs and the Nets/Lakers, tbh, even if we are speaking strictly from a personnel standpoint and ignoring the coaching/environment, etc..

Here at UNT, the long buses run on the weekdays and Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters, and the short buses run on Sundays during the fall and spring semesters + every day during the summers.

Honestly, I had this thought, too. LMA and West coming in feels a lot like bringing in KG and Allen to some degree. That Celts team then clicked right away and won something like 66 games and a championship. But I withheld on making the comparison because that type of success is not guaranteed. Still, I can see this team coming out of the gates and blowing the league away.

They also got taken to 7 games by the Hawks & Cavs, not looking too dominant on the road

Nope, just nope.
But a fun thread all the same. :tu
None of those teams had the second coming of Scottie Pippen just going into his prime though. ;)
PS And yes, I know Scottie was a better playmaker, but Kawhi is growing into that. And there are so many other similarities between them, especially defensively, that it needs to be said.

Re: I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
Just saw this thread. OP just compared RC's masterpiece summer of getting top tier players to sign for less dollars to play in a small market with Billy King's effort to build an 8th seed in the East by trading for cap killing contracts and giving up first round draft picks. This is the single worst comparison in basketball.
i mean Nets mortgaged their future to produce a mid tier team in the east. And they set a record in luxury taxes. RC didn't spend a single first round pick, signed three all stars to cap friendly contracts and filled the roster at bargain prices for either high quality players or upside players. And is no where near the luxury tax penalties the Nets received.

It feels a little tainted to me to have 2 series where you win the series but don't even win a game on the other team's home floor. It's kind of cheesing, tbh. Glad that the Spurs took game 6 in OKC.

People would still be satisfied had we lost Game 6 at OKC and then came home and bitch slapped OKC at home in Game 7.

Not really. It would have left a bitter taste in the mouth even after the championship. That we won but we still couldn't break the long-standing curse of the OKC chesapeake arena and the refs that had gone on since like forever. (Our last win there having been in the 2010 part of the 10-11 season when the Thunder still had Jeff Green, Ibaka was extremely limited and Harden hadn't quite developed yet + the Spurs extensively relied on Hill/Dicky/McDyess.) It would have felt like yeah we won but only because we luckyassed our way to the #1 seed in the regular season and needed all of that advantage just to win in the playoffs.

Pierce and Garnett weren't even on the team yet.
Who were the three HOFers on the team in 2012-13? Lopez and D-Will are not. Joe Johnson has best chance but still not. You talking about Ben Wallace?
Spurs have three players better than anyone on the Nets that year. The next six (Manu, Parker, Mills, Diaw, West, Green) in no particular order would have all been at worst the 4th best player on that team.
On edit, saw you had the wrong year. Still, at that point, Garnett could barely play any minutes and DWill had seriously regressed.

Whoever made this article doesn't know what he's talking about PERIOD. ALDRIGE,KAWHI AND DUNCAN hands down better then anyone on that old ass broken down team. Those guys on that team fucking went off pass history and name Sake. Deron fuckin sucked ass after Utah trade,Garnett has been done like when everyone said Duncan was done back in 2009 but how things changed and pierce who fucking talks trash but doesn't have the balls to always back it up. Plus he's always been a sore loser. Go look at his career. He runs his mouth when he's winning but when he's losing he's hiding and first one off the court to get showered and get home. Plus he's a prim modonna. #factsthattruthhurts

For me, this is a very lazy comparison.
1. Shaq - Out of shape (conflict with Kobe).
2. Kobe - Primadonna dealing with rape accusations.
3. Malone - A very aging star who actually did really well 'til injuries.
4. Payton - PG past his prime and pretty much a ho hum PG by this point.
Then, you look at all the Lakers role players like Shaw, Fox, Horry, Walton, (Fisher), etc whose games were based upon feeding at Shaq's teet. And with Shaq being out of shape and the new guys not spreading the court, their effectiveness suddenly became dookie.
To me, the Spurs didn't reshape their team like the Lakers did. Rather, they brought in better pieces that only maximize the system that is already in place.

Re: I just hope our season doesn't turn into a reiteration of the 2012-2013 Nets
I've never understood why people consider the 2004 Lakers to be an insulting comparison to their team, tbh:lol..
I realize they had massive hype and did not reach their ultimate goal, but did everybody forget that they were in the NBA Finals? They didn't lose because they had big names that didn't fit, they lost because Kobe and Shaq finally imploded and Karl Malone got injured, tbh..
Their actual team wasn't that special in hindsight(product of a poor era), but they were clearly special in relation to their competition in that particular season ..

Good points. But the Lakers basically were swept in five games in the finals (Company Men gave Game 2 to them); and they were blown out very badly in the three games in Detroit. Lakers were never even in those games. They looked like the most bush league team in NBA Finals history; and they made the Pistons look like an all-time great team in comparison (even though they're not).

That's all true and it was the biggest upset of all-time by Vegas' measure, it merits some ridicule, but that team was extremely dependent on the top 4 guys, they had virtually nothing else..their 5th best player was Derek Fisher who had a terrible year IIRC:lol..
They were one of the worst shooting teams in the league, had no depth whatsoever, and didn't have any notable defensive players, yet still made the Finals based on talent alone, which is why I find negative comparisons to them to be inaccurate..they are actually a pretty great example of where top-tier talent can take you in the NBA..
Take away the 3rd best of those 4 guys + the 2 primary superstars on the team accepting the end of their relationship, escalating in Kobe putting on one of the most selfish displays of basketball you'll ever see, and that's the finished product..still, though, they made it to the Finals, and they went through the Spurs and a good Wolves team, it's not like they were the 2013 Lakers, etc..

True. Though those Wolves really exposed the Lakers. And imo, the Lakers beat the odds by eliminating the Spurs. I don't think the 04 Lakers were defying the rules though. "It's a star driven league" was the mantra. The Pistons/Spurs ushered in team basketball (and terrible ratings).

Yeah Malone and Payton were interviewed years later and talked about the volatile relationship Kobe and Shaq had on and off the court. Too bad because Malone really wanted to win and took a big discount to join them. At least Payton got one on his way out with the Heat.

Malone gave the Jazz the finger; and he choked against the Bulls. F him. He got what he deserved. Payton and the Sonics also choked. I'll remember that more than that he was a role player on a Heat team that had no business winning a championship. But I'm cynical. Most sports fans have softer hearts. :lol

True. Kenny smith made fun of Payton when they were on Inside the NBA before about stealing a ring on his way out. Remember this: https://youtu.be/LVmhl_DdvAA?t=1m32s Payton said Duncan didn't deserve to be on the All-Star team. Then he got into making fun of Kenny Smith, saying that Smith was just riding on Hakeem's back during those b2b championships.
Also, you should have heard what those "sports fans" were saying about David West after he took a 10-11M discount to join the spurs. Blazers, Pacers, Warriors, Heat, Clippers and Lakers fans etc...were saying that the spurs aren't built but rebuilt and "bought" this offseason.
Kevin Arnovitz said it best imo, he said that after almost 2 decades of continued excellence, consecutive 50+ win seasons and championship banners the spurs finally get a big name in Free Agency (not that they would beg for players anyway) but it's nice to see players saying that they appreciate the spurs for their winning culture, like West and LMA said.

You are right about the ratings. That's why David Stern hated the spurs during those years until he retired. If he had his choice he would pick only the lakers, knicks, Bulls or Celtics to be in the Finals. It was even reported that he even prevented some teams from poaching/hiring spurs front office managers because he didn't want anyone that shared Pop's ideas and wisdom to spread to other teams. lol. The 2014 NBA finals win was a nice F-U to Stern too. I remember when Mark Cuban backed Stern when he fined Pop over resting players during that nationally televised game in Miami. He never liked it when they won a championship. Glad Stern's gone and Silver took over.

I'd like to say that David Stern is evil personified. But more accurately, he's a reflection of the world we live in. When you're catering to a dumb (young) fan base in a liquified media world, then he gets away with all his nonsense by default. And even the Celtics will get jolted for the bigger NY, LA, or Chicago markets. I've seen it happen plenty.
Personally, I think Silver has much of the same motives as Stern. He just has to do damage control though. Stern took the NBA to some ugly places. When you have a significant number of fans saying that the Kings were the rightful champs 13 years later....
