This. Take one of them out and there will be cracks in the line. It might not look so bad against weaker competition but it's glaring against the other top teams.
There's simply no one to protect the rim with Timmy out. You can't duplicate what he's done but the Spurs need to find someone to grow along with Leonard. LMA is a short term answer. Boban at best is a bench/situational option.
The perimeter takes a severe hit with Leonard out. You have Green to help but the other guards (Parker, Mills, Manu) are weak links. Simmons isn't great but he might be able to improve with time and coaching.
I think you mentioned in the game day thread that this wasn't a great week for Leonard defensively. It's true. His strength is locking into one player and helping on others/recovering on his own man. Against the Warriors and Cavs he's been asked to do too much. You can't expect him to shut someone down when he's being bounced around on assignments. You guard guys differently. Having to guard Thompson a few possessions, then Curry, then Green, back to Thompson, etc is tough for even great defenders. Same with the Cavs. Lebron is a beast to guard on its own but to then pick up Love or that ugly zone is asking for trouble. It's even worse when you're expecting help behind you (funneling the player into the rim protector) and lack of communication.
The Spurs need a rim protector and guards who can do their own job in the worse way.

Get well soon Tim.
The debacle against the Worriers & Cavs was a ploy by Pop to reward Tim w/ a farewell DPOY gift just like he sat out Kawhi then unleashed him after the All-Star break which earned him a DPOY award.:toast
Re: Tim Duncan for DPOY..
Spurs are now -5 in Def Rating without TD 93.8 vs 98.9--a mark that exactly put us on the same level with Warriors D..

Paint problems With Duncan sidelined, the Spurs have given up 52 points or more in the paint in three of their last four games, including 54 in Monday’s 107-92 win over Orlando.
The Spurs were surrendering just 39.2 points in the paint when Duncan played in his last game Jan. 22.
“You know he is going to be in the right position,” Manu Ginobili said of Duncan. “With his size and length, he’s going to bother a lot of shots. He’s going to get two or three blocks, some big boards.”

Re: Tim Duncan for DPOY..
it would be awesome if he won it... he'd join that jordan/hakeem/kawhi club.

We miss Timmy, we are not winning without him.
Re: Tim Duncan for DPOY..
Just seeing where people think TD is in the DPOY race following the layoff / his return....
