Pop would rather have a soft "high IQ" big instead of an aggressive monkey baller. He can bully the former but not the latter.

People can't say I told you so on the splitter dump because he suffered a season ending injury. Still, if the spurs dumped other players instead and splitter stayed healthy, it would be hard to see the spurs get wrecked this badly.
