Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
I just downloaded a copy of game 2 of the 95 WCF, and this moron jacked-up three three-pointers in the first quarter alone. What a dumbass. First one the Spurs are on a fast break and Rodman just throws that crap up, second there's 5 seconds left on the shot clock so what does he do? Shoot a three from the baseline with Olajuwon contesting his shot. Then, near the end of the quarter the Spurs get a rare offensive board and he jacks up another not even close piece of crap from 2 feet outside the line at the top of the circle. I forgot just how much of a liability this idiot was.

Dude, they showed that game on NBA classics, and I had hte same reaction. Remember at the start of the 3rd when they show his season total 3pt fg's and his GAME's total 3pt fg's???? He jacked up 2 more than he did ALL SEASON
The spurs could have won that game too. I think he was on the take.

I have NEVER forgotten that weak Rodman crap. Remember that season? I believe the Spurs went on their normal April run and won 16 or so in a row. Rodman was injured in a motorcycle accident and did not play in any of those games. When questioned, Rodman said he did that on purpose to let the team know they could win without him...What a jerk!
-
Re: Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
Yeah... 2 three pointers all season, 3 in the first quarter.
-
Re: Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
I remember that, in 1995, the blackout rules didn't allow any local broadcasts and that the Spurs games were on locally only by pay per view. That lasted through the first 2 games of the WCF. I didn't have tickets to Game 2, so I strapped on my Walkman and went out to listen as I mowed the lawn. I knew things were bad when Jay Howard ran out of explanations for Rodman's decision-making and was just short of cursing on the radio. That lawn looked like crap, because everytime the Rockets would overcome a Spurs run and push the lead out a bit, I kept thinking back to Rodman's 3's in the 1st Quarter.
Clearly, Rodman didn't single-handedly lose that game for the Spurs, but giving away possessions with those 3's didn't help.
-
Re: Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
I do remember Rodman bailing the spurs out of the first round when DRob went something like 2-27 from the field.
-
Re: Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
Rodman is the most overrated player in spurs history period.

Yeah... that was a great investment of $50 back then. Fuck you, Rogers Cable. I was in shock when I moved to Houston and found out they actually televised home games for free there instead of charging $30 a pop like fucking Rogers and Paragon.

I don't have the exact numbers (but will get them before the end of today), but I have some serious doubts about that recollection. Rodman was good in the First Round series against Denver that year -- he had at least a couple of double-doubles and (I think) had a 20 point game.
I'll check and get back to you.

Re: Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
I was more annoyed about Rodman hanging out under the basket looking for rebounds while Robert Horry hit uncontested jump shots.

Just want a little balance in the conversation. Rodman was destructive, but I think Elliott's missed free-throws cost the spurs the Houston Series more than anything else.
Plus, it was glaring that DRob lacked a reliable inside post game.
Also, it didn't help that Bob Hill never stressed defense.

The Spurs won the first round 3-0 against the Nuggets. They didn't exactly need bailing out. Besides, anything good he did was pretty much erased when he hurt the team when they most needed him.

We can blame everyone in the world, but IMO with as great as DRob was the spurs don't win anything without TIMMY.

Far from being a Drob hater. I don't have blinders on either. Just like Horry bailed out Duncan in game 5 against detroit.

not hate, it's the truth. BTW, Timmy is the best. Big Dave maybe the best human being ever to play in the NBA and a top 10 center of all time.
but you have all the answers so whatever you say.

Re: Dennis Rodman is a stupid, stupid asshole
David looked like crap in that game too... but I guess Rosen's critique of David really pissed me off, when he was going off on how valuable Rodman was and how Robinson was such a disappointment to Rodman. Say what you want about David, but I've never seen him make the I don't give a fuck plays Rodman did. I loved the way Rodman wouldn't pick up Horry on the break also.

But Rodman played fantastic against a 1 legged PF in the first round and should be excused from any further critique, and all blame should be put on Robinson.
Duh.

In the First Round in 1995, David Robinson was 21-49 FG and 15-20 FT, for 57 points (19.0 ppg). He had a high game of 24 (Game 3). Big Dave averaged 6.7 rebounds per game in that series.
The Rod-Man averaged 10.0 ppg and 13.3 rpg.
In Dave's worst game of that series (Game 1) Robinson had 14 points; Rodman had 3 points (on 1-6 shooting).
In Game 2, Dave bounced back with 19 points; Rodman also had 19 points.
In Game 3, Dave dropped 24; Rodman had 8 points.
David wasn't great in that series, and Rodman's scoring numbers went up and his rebounding (11, 16, 13) was pretty consistent.
What's striking about the numbers from that series, though is the other role players. Elliott averaged 19 ppg on 54% shooting. Avery averaged 17.7 ppg on 62% shooting. And Del Negro averaged 11 ppg on 48% shooting. I can't remember the last time the Spurs went through a playoff series (any playoff series) with all 5 starters averaging double figures for the series. (at least I don't think I can remember. . . . .)

I like how a guy scoring 26 points and grabbing 19 rebounds needed to be bailed out in a game, especially when he kept his team in contention throughout the first 3 quarters when the other teammates played like crap.

He rebounded because thats all the freak show could do.
Period.
He made up for his deficiancies in other areas by busting his ass and rebounding.
Ben Wallace is pretty much Rodman, I just have more respect for Wallace cause he has half a brain, and hell take the ball to the hole, and has a decent hook shot.
ROdman had ZERO offensive game.
He pretty much was Worse than Bruce Bowen on offense.
The defense??
Funny, everytime I saw him play D, it was against Malone, Horry, and Elden Cambell.
He was a decent defender, who got defensive player of the year awards cause of his defensive rebounding.
The guy was a traveling freak show, who focused JUST on rebounding.
I have more respect for more rounded players, than 1 sided players like that dumbfuck.

Post count? I didn't label Robinson as soft. Hakeem planted it right on his forehead and kicked his ass right out of the building.
Now that's constructive.

So just because Hakeem was the better player in the series that suddenly makes Robinson soft? Bullshit. You don't believe that any more than all the other stupid antagonistic shit you've been tacking onto threads.

You must be one of those chalk up the regular season wins kind of fan.
I don't think Robinson was all that soft, but he definitely didn't have the balls to carry a team on his back and win a championship.
But hey, he built up the stats, he was a great community guy and he is a hall of famer.

You must be one of those smoking crack and having multiple personalities kind of fan, since you say "I don't think Robinson was all that soft" following "David Robinson was the Spokesperson for Charmin".
I agree completely that he didn't have the fire or the drive to carry the team the way champions do, and he proved it time and time again. Only a moron would try to argue that IMHO. That doesn't, however, make him soft. Hakeem played great, and Robinson was telling the truth when he said that he thought his defense was pretty good. Robinson never avoided contact or pretended to be hurt or complained about anything through his career. The same cannot be said of Hakeem.
Since you already know all this, you can fess up to the fact that the Charmin statement was simply intended to piss people off, and forgive me for letting Vashner in on the joke.

God, Horry was a fucking assassin that game. David was phenomenal in the 4th quarter, but the team refused to guard the three point line.

Wrong, Ginobili and Bowen were having good games. Even Parker was solid in the first half. Horry was the reason the Spurs weren't up double digits by halftime when he missed about 3 easy layups.

I guess role players aren't needed than. He was a big part of the bulls winning 72 games in my opinion. The bulls might've been champions that year without Rodman but with him were unbelievabull. Rodman was even a bigger part of that Pistons team guarding Jordan and rebounding at an incredible mark.

The score was tied at halftime. Even if Horry made all 3 layups, the Spurs would be up by 6. Besides, Ginobili and Bowen did not carry the offense, it was Duncan who really turned up a notch in that game and kept the Spurs close.

It told me that Rodman had to make up for Longley's weaknesses. Like you mentioned before Rodman is like Ben Wallace and see how Detroit does without Ben Wallace. Rodman gave Chicago lots of extra possessions for Jordan to do his thing. That is more valuable than anything for a superstar to have players that do that.

Momentum was lost. It wasn't merely 6 points, those misses also started the Pistons fastbreak when they were having trouble scoring.
No Ginobili and Bowen didn't have GREAT games. But they certainly weren't bad. Ginobili had 9 assists, I doubt he was doing 'nothing'.

All subjective. Point is, Duncan was having a great game, and the Spurs were still only tied at halftime. Perhaps doing 'nothing' was exaggerating the situation, but there was no question that Duncan was the one that put the whole Spurs on his shoulder and kept them in the game before Horry went off.
BTW, Ginobili played quite poorly (by his standards) that game offensively, shooting only 5/16 for the game. Parker had 6 TO in the game, and Duncan, other than the missed FTs (which happened in the 4th quarter), had a superb game.

Ginobili played a reasonable game. 5/16, but he missed some chippies, and getting 9 asts and 2 Tos is not exactly the statline of someone who is doing 'nothing'. Bowen actually contributed on offense too. Yes Duncan carried the bulk of the load in the second half, but Ginobili set up Horry plenty of times as well. It wasn't exactly Duncan doing everything and all the role players doing nothing. Billups was pretty much the only Piston dominating, the rest of their role players were hardly any better than the Spurs. So I think it is an exaggeration to say the Spurs role players did NOTHING.
-

Yes, let's compare whoever's got more rings and allocate the blame to the ones who won fewer rings, because we have obviously not watched the game.

I have always thought that the Spurs failure in 1995 was partly on Rodman, partly on Robinson, and mostly on the management style. Had management not been so, um, militaristic with Rodman, things may have been a bit different. That team had three top-tier players and should have won that title. Robinson excelled because Rodman took pressure off of him in some situations; when Rodman lost interest (in part, I think, because of the way he was handled) things got very difficult for David, and unfortunately, he didn't really rise to meet the challenge. Not all on David and not all on Rodman.
I do think, though, that the Rodman experiement (which Pop inherited in the summer of 1994) has shaped the manner in which Popovich has built this franchise. The idea that the Spurs are nothing but choir boys is something of a myth; but the notion of building a team fill with character guys who understand and respect authority isn't. Pop won't allow another Rodman-type in here, ever.
