Which is why he was one of only two freshmen last year to put up the scoring rebounding and ASSIST numbers he did - other being Simmons.
Also, he was a freshman. A very malleable game and has the size to boot.
And maybe the highlight reels had a bias towards scoring and not assists?

If you had to choose between a PG who is a great scorer with average passing skills or a great passer with no scoring instincts, you definitely take the former. The Spurs need a penetrating threat at the PG position. Parker didn't have a jump shot when he first started but his penetration skills made up for a lot of those deficiencies. If he can get to the rim then he has an opportunity to create for others. A jump shot can be coached but scoring instincts can't be coached no matter how hard you try.

In modern NBA history, PGs that play a top 2-3 role on championship teams are always big-time scorers with a shooting mentality, other than Magic..

You want an old-school PG? Here's one that didn't get drafted. I don't know if he's quick/athletic enough to play in the NBA, but he can flat-ass run the PnR. I started watching him in the NCAA Tourney his freshman year, and he was tough as nails. He would have taken a partially-guaranteed deal, so it wouldn't have cost the Spurs much to have a look at him. He just signed a deal to play summer ball for Toronto, but I think that means he's still fair game for the season. I don't think he'll turn out like Isiah Thomas did at the last pick of the draft, but I do think he could be a damned good backup PG. If this kid doesn't have a place in today's NBA, maybe the old-school PG is a thing of the past anyway.
If you didn't see him play last year, this is from his Draft Express file, and it's pretty accurate:

You're right. But they can make good backups. You need a guy who can just be steady and not lose ground, and who won't collapse under pressure coming off the bench. A lot of bench PG's are flashy, when everything is going their way, but they go to shit under pressure. That's why they're backups. i wouldn't read to much into his offence, it is about to get rewritten from scratch. What matters is that he has all the physical tools to become great. He is also advertised as a good worker, so that's also great.
If he doesn't play with LeBron he doesn't win that championship. Noteworthy that the last championship team's have featured heavily playmaking forwards. LeBron is a freak of nature and HoF talent, but Draymond as a playmaker is super important to the GSW and the last time we won it, Bobo was basically our distributor. I guess the point is If you don't have a PG that does a good job getting the ball to others, you better have a forward who is a good damn playmaker and accumulates those assists distributing the basketball.Quote:
