Strength: Combo guard with decent size for the two and solid ball skills … One of the ACC’s top scorers throughout his college career, doing so in many different ways … Quick release on his jump shot, needed very little room to get his shot off … High volume isolation player who had to create shots for himself constantly, doing so quite efficiently in that particular scenario … Ran a lot of pick-and-roll, was good at finding the open player and has good instincts once the defense commits … Improved at playing without the ball quite a bit, knows how to use screens to get looks … Runs the break well, changes speeds to get to the basket and was solid in transition … Much improved passer, has always been asked to play on the ball a lot and increased his assist total while decreasing his overall turnover percentage … Was relied upon so heavily, yet still managed to shoot a respectable 45.3% FG over his time at Boston College … Always was able to get to the FT stripe pretty often, crafty player who manages to get to the hoop and does not avoid contact … For the amount of shots he had at the hoop, shot a solid percentage, plus made over 50% of his two-point shots during both of his last two seasons … Dangerous going to either side, not someone who is stifled if moved to his off-hand … Shot a lot off of the dribble and while it was not his strong suit, he certainly can do so to get a decent look … Has a nice array on offensive moves near the basket, with a nice runner, floater and can finish high traffic lay-ups … An improved defender who became better at playing passing lanes and exerted more effort on that end as his time in college progressed … Played huge minutes in college (36 mpg for his career), with a major usage, a lot of in-game experience at a high level of play … Was forced to take so much offensive responsibility, it could really help him thrive once he is with players closer to his level of talent
Weaknesses: Seems to be much more of a scorer as opposed to a true point guard, and while his size is attractive for a combo guard, if he is seen as a full time SG, it definitely leads to some defensive concerns … While he was forced to take a lot of shots, it still leaves some question marks regarding mid/long range shot selection … Did get to the FT stripe less during his junior year than normal, was he settling for too many outside shots? … Not incredibly athletic, without ideal speed or lateral quickness, which lead again to questions about his defensive ability … Can lose focus of the ball on defense, plus will give players a bit too much space without being able to properly react until it is too late … Weighed in at the combine at slightly over 185 lbs, which shows as he gets caught in screens and has a lot of trouble with recovery … Boston College really struggled to win games, which is not necessarily a knock on Hanlan, it just is something that could be taken into account that he was the best player on some bad teams and whether he would still have been this type of scorer at a winning program … Still a streaky shooter, took a lot of contested looks, which might be part of his situation, though once again is something to take into account … He did improve his assist total, though is it enough to prove he could play PG at the NBA level? … Was prone to over dribbling, often tried to do too much and could be forced into making bad decisions

I remember him from his BC days. I thought he was pretty darn good...best player on an ok team, but he did face some great competition in the ACC. One of those players that looked like a first rounder to me. I'd love to see him turn into something decent for SA.

Nice reachback into history. I was going to post that I liked his game when we were talking about him last year. He reminded me of a less-athletic George Hill...nice size, scoring instincts and could be "coached up" on defense.
He isn't young, but he has enough upside to stick as a rotation player in the NBA I think.

He was the 42nd pick in the 2015 draft and the Spurs liked him so there's that. Bogut only fetched a second rounder from Dallas so it seems about right.

Re: Majestic Blanket Tent of Olivier Hanlan
You guys are gonna like him. Went back and watched the first SL game against the Spurs. He started at the 2 and had 11 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds on 4/6 shooting. The two shots he missed were threes that he took in rhythm with no hesitation, and every time he had the ball in his hands something good happened, either a layup, drawing a foul, or a great look for a teammate. He's a good passer, has good court awareness, and is a smart, capable defender.
He looks like a point guard to me, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the big team as exactly that.

Spurs own his rights. Doesn't matter if he plays in SL or not, still worthy of discussion.
I don't think though he's coming to the Spurs this year. Too many guards already signed up.
We also got Murray as a project, that likely won't even play a game in the NBA this coming season. Murray isn't as refined as Forbes, Arcdiacono (spelling?) or Hanlan. I think all 3 were seniors when they left college. Murray is going to get the Anderson/Cojo treatment. What that means is....
there's a missing player at PG for Spurs to fill in.

I think your logic points to Hanlan. Forbes is a shooting guard, and the Spurs have paid for the privilege of leaving him in Austin all year if need be. I agree about Murray being too young. He'll be in Austin as well. Hanlan should be the most NBA-ready of all of them.

I do prefer seeing Forbes in the roster given that he's the better shooter.
Spurs will need to have 13 players suited up. Which means they will be short one player.
Gasol / Marjanovic
Aldridge / LJC
Leonard / Anderson / Bertans
Green / Ginobili / Simmons
Parker / Mills /
That 13th player likely will not be Murray.
Will just have to see if Hanlan is worth opening up a spot. I just think he doesn't shoot as well as Forbes, although he's a slightly bigger player.

wonder if they'd actually bring in Hanlan while they develop Murray in Austin. If Hanlan can play, then they stay with that. If he can't, then throw in Murray.

Murray isn't going to be ready until at earliest 2017-2018 season. He can't shoot and has a risky dribbling style. Let's just say that he's a poor man's Simmons.

Forbes is making the roster. I'm almost certain of it if this shooting holds up. I like Hanlan more than most, but he's not beating out Forbes based on anything we've seen. The team needs shooters, and they aren't exposing the best one they've had in quite some time to waivers simply because "He's a shooting guard." They already have Murray for their deep bench. I hope they can stash Hanlan for another season, because he can totally compete with Murray, Forbes and Simmons for Mills' and Manu's jobs after this season. But not yet.

I've only seen one quarter of one SL game. What's the book on Forbes? Everyone says his shot is just beautiful. I mean he's already made the team after two summer games? Is this Gary Neal redux? Not disagreeing with you guys, just saying I'm shocked he's made such a strong impression so quickly.

I really like him, and I hope he gets to go up against Jaylen Brown tomorrow. I say Brown because I'd like to see how he handles defending size. He can do that well enough, he can play the two, which will open up his career a lot. I think he has Redick-like upside.

I'm not sure why you guys think they play the same position. Forbes is a shooter. He won't be a rotation guy, he's a role player. From what I've seen, Hanlan looks like a point guard. If the Spurs bring him in thinking he's a two, then they might as well just release him now. I think he's a better point guard than anyone on the Spurs' summer league team, including Kyle and Simmons, and he could probably become the backup point guard pretty quickly. There's no reason to send him away, especially for a guy fresh out of the draft that isn't going to contribute. They'd be better off sending Murray overseas for a year.

Murray's staying. That makes six guard, not counting Forbes. Some of that pressure is relieved by using Simmons as the backup three, but there simply isn't a roster spot for an eight guard. That's why it doesn't matter what you consider Forbes. They are in competition for a spot barring a trade.

Murray is a first round draft pick... he's not going overseas. He'll be playing in Austin and I seriously doubt that he'll develop a shot in time to play in the regular season rotation.
Forbes should be guaranteed a slot in the regular rotation.
Hanlan... well, maybe he's the best PG but does he even have elite skills? If he doesn't, then I don't care if he gets stashed away like so many other guards that the Spurs have stashed away never to return.

Parker Green Mills Manu Murray Simmons. Then you have Forbes. That's seven. Kawhi Anderson Bertans LMA LJC Gasol and his backup. That's seven more. With only one full big at the four, they'll need another. Can't play small against everyone.

Re: Majestic Blanket Tent of Olivier Hanlan
From what I've seen from Forbes, he is one of the more gifted shooters anywhere. Where I think he needs some additional PD is with uncovering to gain space in the NBA. Even though Tom Izzo's teams are perennially very physical, it's a whole new level of physicality in the NBA. So perpetual movement and uncovering will be important. He also needs to become a better ball-handler and decision-maker in the physically challenging NBA floor game.

Bertrans is likely to get the most minutes. Everything after that is speculation by I'd assume forbes gets the best most since pop has a place for no defense gunners in the offense already. I wouldn't be surprised if ljc got zero minutes outside of garbage time. He's just too raw. Same with Murray although again Murray could get he shock treatment of having to guard real nba players once our or twice

I agree. I will not be surprised if LJC and Murray are spending all their time in Austin.

I'm wondering how I was so optimistic about this team 12 hours ago. I'm gonna go find something to drink. :bobo:

Pop may be forced into retirement after this season.

Now, if reality hasn't set in yet.... Anderson who is playing in Summer league... isn't included in the rookies and sophomores. He's actually a senior statesman!!
Kyle's jumper looks great, and he's added muscle and it hasn't seemed to slow him down. I thought he was going to be one of many bright spots, but I was expecting Hanlan and DeCosey to be competing for open spots on the roster. Again, not sure how I got that in my head. :lol

I hate to say this, but Manu really needs to sign somewhere else and Tony Parker needs to be traded. It will be an outright disaster if Duncan decides to come back.

Ah so you did start drinking....It's really amazing but ignoring the warriors we still have tremendous talent. You can't really argue that the starting five isn't among the league's best with probably three all stars. That's insane! A legit three stars.

Before the season might be better. Get a coach who has a desire to coach up young guys.

I agree. Great front line. And the front line will fit Danny Green's game, so I expect a resurgence from him. The wild card is Parker. If he comes in committed to running the team and getting good shots for his teammates, the starting and finishing lineups will be amazing.
That's a lot to count on from a guy who clearly doesn't seem to get that he isn't the same player he was five years ago. Then when you go to the bench there are so many question marks. It makes my head hurt, and I actually haven't been drinking. Though I probably should.

Nah, Manu would still be great to have assuming he's not out for a payday.
Agreed that it'd be nice to trade Parker but 1) it's not happening, 2) I'm not even sure who the Spurs would go out and be able to get at this point to replace him. Would need to check the FA list, and 3) his contract isn't quite as bad with the cap rising the way it is (next year it'll be even better)
