Re: Majestic Blanket Tent of Olivier Hanlan
You guys are gonna like him. Went back and watched the first SL game against the Spurs. He started at the 2 and had 11 points, 3 assists and 3 rebounds on 4/6 shooting. The two shots he missed were threes that he took in rhythm with no hesitation, and every time he had the ball in his hands something good happened, either a layup, drawing a foul, or a great look for a teammate. He's a good passer, has good court awareness, and is a smart, capable defender.
He looks like a point guard to me, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him make the big team as exactly that.

Yeah, but Spurs own his rights and right now he's stashed away somewhere in Europe.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your meaning, but they said that he's going to play for the Spurs' SL team Thursday.

Spurs own his rights. Doesn't matter if he plays in SL or not, still worthy of discussion.
I don't think though he's coming to the Spurs this year. Too many guards already signed up.
We also got Murray as a project, that likely won't even play a game in the NBA this coming season. Murray isn't as refined as Forbes, Arcdiacono (spelling?) or Hanlan. I think all 3 were seniors when they left college. Murray is going to get the Anderson/Cojo treatment. What that means is....
there's a missing player at PG for Spurs to fill in.

I think your logic points to Hanlan. Forbes is a shooting guard, and the Spurs have paid for the privilege of leaving him in Austin all year if need be. I agree about Murray being too young. He'll be in Austin as well. Hanlan should be the most NBA-ready of all of them.

I do prefer seeing Forbes in the roster given that he's the better shooter.
Spurs will need to have 13 players suited up. Which means they will be short one player.
Gasol / Marjanovic
Aldridge / LJC
Leonard / Anderson / Bertans
Green / Ginobili / Simmons
Parker / Mills /
That 13th player likely will not be Murray.
Will just have to see if Hanlan is worth opening up a spot. I just think he doesn't shoot as well as Forbes, although he's a slightly bigger player.

wonder if they'd actually bring in Hanlan while they develop Murray in Austin. If Hanlan can play, then they stay with that. If he can't, then throw in Murray.

Murray isn't going to be ready until at earliest 2017-2018 season. He can't shoot and has a risky dribbling style. Let's just say that he's a poor man's Simmons.

Forbes is making the roster. I'm almost certain of it if this shooting holds up. I like Hanlan more than most, but he's not beating out Forbes based on anything we've seen. The team needs shooters, and they aren't exposing the best one they've had in quite some time to waivers simply because "He's a shooting guard." They already have Murray for their deep bench. I hope they can stash Hanlan for another season, because he can totally compete with Murray, Forbes and Simmons for Mills' and Manu's jobs after this season. But not yet.

I agree here... Forbes absolutely must make the team. He's a Steph Curry clone.

Weaknesses: Seems to be much more of a scorer as opposed to a true point guard, … Can lose focus of the ball on defense, plus will give players a bit too much space without being able to properly react until it is too late … … He did improve his assist total, though is it enough to prove he could play PG at the NBA level? … Was prone to over dribbling, often tried to do too much and could be forced into making bad decisions
Sounds like CIA Pop has his new pet to groom

I've only seen one quarter of one SL game. What's the book on Forbes? Everyone says his shot is just beautiful. I mean he's already made the team after two summer games? Is this Gary Neal redux? Not disagreeing with you guys, just saying I'm shocked he's made such a strong impression so quickly.

It's Gary Neal if after watching Neal you said, "And he's not bad on defense, either." I take it you've seen the highlights people have posted?

So if he can guard a man with only one shoe he's an upgrade from Gary. :lol
Seriously, sounds promising.:toast

I really like him, and I hope he gets to go up against Jaylen Brown tomorrow. I say Brown because I'd like to see how he handles defending size. He can do that well enough, he can play the two, which will open up his career a lot. I think he has Redick-like upside.

Great. I'll have to make sure I watch that game.

I'm not sure why you guys think they play the same position. Forbes is a shooter. He won't be a rotation guy, he's a role player. From what I've seen, Hanlan looks like a point guard. If the Spurs bring him in thinking he's a two, then they might as well just release him now. I think he's a better point guard than anyone on the Spurs' summer league team, including Kyle and Simmons, and he could probably become the backup point guard pretty quickly. There's no reason to send him away, especially for a guy fresh out of the draft that isn't going to contribute. They'd be better off sending Murray overseas for a year.

Murray's staying. That makes six guard, not counting Forbes. Some of that pressure is relieved by using Simmons as the backup three, but there simply isn't a roster spot for an eight guard. That's why it doesn't matter what you consider Forbes. They are in competition for a spot barring a trade.

Murray is a first round draft pick... he's not going overseas. He'll be playing in Austin and I seriously doubt that he'll develop a shot in time to play in the regular season rotation.
Forbes should be guaranteed a slot in the regular rotation.
Hanlan... well, maybe he's the best PG but does he even have elite skills? If he doesn't, then I don't care if he gets stashed away like so many other guards that the Spurs have stashed away never to return.

How's that? You think Murray is going to play hard ball with salary negotiations?
