Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
At least it's his non-shooting hand, but still gonna take him a while to be 100%. Suddenly our big rotation looks very short.
Time for Lee and Dedmon to step up.

Hopefully he's back by the Rrt.

More Dedmon is always a good thing. Plus Old Man Pau gets his rest so it's not so bad.

Probably will be out until late February - Early March. Spurs have some nice assets, but are untouchable outside of their first round pick this year. Probably pick up a few big guys on a ten day contract until then.

Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Spurs won't miss a beat. Blessing in disguise. More Bertans and Dedmon, which is needed. If only Parker would go out a couple of weeks with a bad hammy so we can see more Murray.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
David Lee > Pau
My only complaint is that this didn't happen closer to the playoffs so he'd be out for season. Also we have to hope Lee stays healthy with the increase in minutes. I remember he had durability issues.

That wouldn't be smart smh. Murray had a nice game, but he's been very inconsistent, which is expected for such a young player. He's gotta mature.
TP is needed, especially the way he's been playing.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Spurs defense about to get a whole lot better.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
My concern is not only the strain it puts on players physically when key rotational players go out, but how this team is still working things out (despite the very solid play all things considered). This could be 2-4 weeks of really crucial lost time with Pau and continuing to improve.
Not that it means SA will lose all the time, but it's extra wear and tear and truly valuable lost time together.
Hopefully the silver linings somewhat offset that (Dedmon being forced into more minutes and having to learn not to foul, Lee getting more confident, Bertans getting valuable minutes more consistently.)
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Pau will be missed on Saturday, tbh. That game just got tougher.

Hate to say it, and the Spurs will miss his buckets vs the dregs of the league, but this could be blessing in disguise as far as Dedmon building some trust with Pop for the playoffs.

If he was going to get injured then this was the perfect timing as it will force Pop to play Dedmon & get him acclimated to playing w/ the starters. If he plays well then he should get more rotation minutes when Pau returns to the line-up.

Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Will other teams double LMA more without Gasol? That's my only concern.
I mean they won't respect Dedmon on offense and who knows how they will cover Lee.
If LMA gets double teamed every play I just hope our shooters to step up...

They managed just fine with Tim last season and he was no shooting threat.
I think Dedmon or Lee should be fine... but we shall see.... its probably game by game... I am guessing.

Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Not worried. Dedmond and Lee have shown they can hold the fort. Plus Bertans should get some much needed experience. Pau usually is always in shape and probably game rest would be beneficial for him.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Well, at least Greg does not need an excuse to get him out of s5
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
It'll be interesting to see how missing Pau and by extension not having the Parker-Pau duo to be targeted by PnR, would affect the Spurs defense.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
How many games will Dedmon foul out of in this stretch?
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Spurs will make sure Gasol stays in shape. Its a hand injury, he'll be doing cardio just about every day, and its his left hand so he'll be able to shoot while hes out.

Pau? Working out? You're right that it's possible but by what I've heard about him, I'm worried.

They had their issues in last years playoffs (Curry earlier with Clips injuries making up for it, Bogut during the finals probably costing them the ship) and may get their fair share of injuries again.
As for Pau: Rather have him sit now, than in the playoffs. Giving Bertans and Dedmon (and Lee) his minutes may be good for the team anyway.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Blessing in disguise here... the old man can rest.
Downside.... Parker and Manu also need their rest.
Spurs need to call up two scrubs from the D-league. What about those two scrubs from Argentina and France? Completely forgot their names, yeah, the d-league guys. Let them play instead of Parker and Manu.

Is it cliche to call this a blessing in disguise? Dedmon, Bertans, and Lee going to get some valuable burn while Pau gets some body rest.

Idk about terrible shape. It's his hand, so he can still do conditioning drills and participate in w/e the Spurs are doing that doesn't involve him using that hand much.
Had it been a hammy or ankle, then I would be more concerned about it.

Game shape, conditioning at stamina is something else. Hopefully it's not an issue.

No doubt. I just don't think it will be to the point of terrible. Plus, I just can't see him being any more slow footed than he already is. If nothing else, maybe he'll play in shorter increments, which may not be the worst thing anyway
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
More Dedmon, more Lee, more Bertans, more KA. 4 is actually where SloMo has been the most effective this year. The Defense will be better. If the offense doesn't drop off it could really shape some rotations going forward.

Yea.. Westbrook had it a couple years ago, and I found this. I guess we'll see how he heals. Probably won't have him back for at least a month tho.
Quote:
Here are some other NBA players who have suffered similar injuries as Westbrook, and what the outcome was.
Danny Green - Green sustained a hand fracture injury last season just as Westbrook. The Spurs announced that he is going to miss 4 weeks, but in-fact he returned a bit earlier.
Kawhi Leonard - Leonard experienced a fourth metacarpal fracture last season against the Thunder and missed around 35 days.
Rajon Rondo - Rondo suffered a fifth metacarpal fracture in late September. He was healed through undergoing a surgery, and missed the entire Celtics training camp.
Based on all evidence, Westbrook will miss around 4-6 weeks of the regular season. He's expected to return in late November or by the beginning of December. Most fractures heal well. D.Green and K.Leonard are great examples for optimism, since they experienced metacarpal fractures, they where spectacular in the 2014 playoffs. The big question now is not whether Westbrook can make a full recovery, but whether the Thunder can win enough games in the meantime whether it will even matter.

Was hoping he'd be back after the ASB. Might not see him until mid-March. If that's the case this is pretty terrible news especially if Pop insists on starting him still.

Sad to see him out as I think he has been a solid addition this year. That said, our other bigs are new this year and it gives them a shot to get minutes and improve. I have a feeling we'll need Dedmon late in the season, so here's hoping he steps up.

Well the good news is he will probably be back in early or late March. If Dedmon and Lee don't step up, this could translate into a few more "L's".

Well the Spurs record while he is out will speak for itself to how important he is to this team. There are fans on here that take him for granted, fact is losing a starter is a big loss. Please no more injurys to this team, especially freaky ones like what happened to Pau.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
He will be back first week of March at worst, IMO..judging by all precedents 15-20 games/4-6 weeks is the time frame..Some players managed to comeback after a month especially if it is the non shooting hand, which is the case for Pau....
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
Spurs can win plenty without him. Spurs always step up after an injury. But we'll need his experience, passing, and shooting for the playoffs.
-
Re: Gasol injury thread: Broken fourth metacarpal on left hand
How will Pop alter the SL? Lee replaces Pau and Aldridge moves to center or Dedmon replaces Pau?
Will there be another Diaw at the waiver wire? Splitter?!?!
Sucks for Pau and will definitely change things, I'm cautiously optimistic at best.

Spurs Strength and conditioning coach(es) I have no idea if they have them, and if those are positions that are filled, should be vacant - See Danny Green, Tony Parker, LMA, etc.

They said during the last game Bertans is still having trouble getting or learning the defensive rotations and what not. (According to the coaching staff)
It'll take more time for him to learn, but it's obvious there are things he's gotta clean up a bit and learn. Which is not surprising considering he's a rookie.
People think Pop has something against him.( Not you of course)There are things we don't see that the coaches do and get paid to.

He praised Nico then waived him... Pop is tough to take seriously on things like that bc he is probably going to be more encouraging paying lip service to guys that are not playing much, but who he sees working hard in practices etc. I think he has to encourage them somehow bc it's tough to stay motivated looking to improve if you are a young player not getting much run. It's a contradiction.
Pop also spoke glowingly of Rasual Butler... Pop and RC praised Ray Mac as well... Both then waived. It might be better to not get that much praise. :lol
I suspected when the injury happened that Pop was going to try to get someone else. He didn't even feel comfortable playing Davis last game and stuck with Lamarcus most of the first half. He doesn't even trust Dedmon that much... Dedmon minutes fluctuate and sometimes are as short as 12-14.. He basically picks up more minutes if Pau is sucking on D.
Last game It was actually Messina who gave Davis more run in the second half. I agree with Bklynfan though, Davis is still learning, specially defensively. And regardless what we talk on here Pop has played Kyle as a wing a whole lot and most of his minutes have been at the wing and only very ovassionally as a 4 and only stuck to that when he's had a good game (frankly only the Portland game comes to mind, recently). I think both guys are in a short leash. They get opportunities and play more or less depending on how they are doing. I think they needed another big anyways that is a true center bc Dedmon is foul prone still, Lee is not a rim protector and Lamarcus can get worn down over the course of over a month. Kind of tough to ignore that in the span of a month and a half some other big can get a nag and neither Lee nor Dedmon are really ready for starter minutes. Lee has not been durable the past couple of seasons and Davis has had his knee issues. Still I hope they get run. Kyle was fine playing minutes as a 4 last season. It it wa obviously a short stint... he's not a vet at it by any means either.

There's a tweet somewhere in here. Basically caught his hand with kyle who simulated coming in to contest his layup but then tries to dive out of the way. Pau caught his hand and somehow fractured it. It's the weakest looking contact injury to cause a fracture I have seen. Neither guy was at velocity or anything. Pau must have twisted a finger I guess.
