Name tough bigs in Spurs history...
since Tim Duncan joined the team. Not just bench goons, but contributing bigs that were tough and not pushed around like Adams.
Horry
Oberto
That's all I got.

Re: Name tough bigs in Spurs history...
Kevin Willis was a badass. I don't care how old he was. He was an enforcer-type, and still strong as hell and tough, even if he was older. He had learned how to score farther from the basket, like older big men do. But on D, especially, he was always willing to mix it up under the basket.
I can't believe no one is going to mention Tim. He wrestled like a WWF star most of his career. Tim was a skilled big man, but also as tough as anyone in the league.
Other than those two, we've had a couple of marginal ones (Fabbs and Tiago). Baynes coulda-been. Horry was tough, but not your typical "big man". Other than that, you'd have to go back to Bruise Brother days.

I think the post impliedly is exempting duncan from the list. Thats a given he would be on it.

Yeah Rasta is right. Duncan was implied.

Re: Name tough bigs in Spurs history...
Bonner, Blair, Thomas, Mohammed, Massenburg, Rose. If you're just talking about toughness but if your point is it's not a trait prevalent in Duncan era bigs I totally agree.

Yeah, I see that now. It was during the game, and I guess I scanned.
His point is dead-on, though. We haven't had a lot of toughness in the paint. The really disappointing one for me was Rasho. That big bastard had everything going for him, except toughness. They used to have drills in Minnesota, trying to get him to be aggressive. He could have been so much better.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Spurs somehow always end up with guys like that, good but just lacking toughness. It's why guys like Manu and Parker have taken so many hard fouls and falls with no retaliation since Horry left. It's why teams always push them around. It's why they struggle with really physical teams.

Re: Name tough bigs in Spurs history...
Horry towers above the rest. Did someone really type Oberto? Fuckin' hell.

Rasho at over 7 mil a year was a huge disappointment. He wound up being the most effective at the tail end of his career. He was solid in toronto and seemed to have toughened up some.

Yeah, Splitter wasn't soft. In fact he was pretty good about scrapping under the basket. But that poor bastard just got abused by the refs. The opposing bigs could use him as a punching bag and nothing - but he drew whistles for everything. Throw in all the injury problems, and it's hard to put him into the conversation. I wish he could have stayed healthy.

:lol Shitter was benched in the most important series of the playoffs. He was charming soft. Mike Miller and Battier are laughing right now reading these posts

Tim was benched during the most important moments of the 2013 finals. What's your point? Oh that's right you never have one.

Don't ever put Duncan, who was wrongly benched, in the same breath as Shitter. Fat hands

So the 7-footer not being able to cover the 3P line means he's soft?
Swing and a miss...

You're probably one of those posters that thought Shitter was irreplaceable to our defense, and then disappeared the next year when the defense actually got better when that bum left.
It's fitting that his last series with the team he let Griffin average a triple double while he put up 3/4/1 on 37FG%

Baynes refused to back down from Jermaine O'Neal and found himself in Poop's doghouse.
Perhaps this lack of enforcer-type big men is by design. Those guys have a kind of attitude that Poop cannot handle.

Re: Name tough bigs in Spurs history...
Tony Massenburg and Kevin Willis were my two favourite tough guy bigs. With "tough bigs", I assume you're referring to bigs that were of the enforcer, physically tough variety?
I can't believe hardly anyone mentioned Massenburg. Even though he wasn't a rotation player, I thought he was great. From what Timvp said, the Spurs wanted him back in 2006, but he got into a car accident and wasn't able to make it back. I think he really could have helped in the 2006 season, especially in the series again the Mavs. Spurs needed someone to lay wood on some of those Maverick players, and I think the team was missing Massenburg's tough and physical play that season. Even in spot minutes, I believe that type of play can help turn a game or even in some cases, a series.

Not talking about scrubs. I'm also not really talking about old guys past their prime.
I'm talking about big contributors to the team.

I've said the same thing myself plenty of times. :tu
It's why a guy like make Bonner could last 10 years on the team. He wants guys he can control under him thumb.
