Guess we need to change a lot of names around here...
If we are going to purge our town of names of slave owners and those who advocated and advanced slavery we have to start at the top. Bexar County, San Antonio, and even the Alamo were named after a notorious slave owner. As viceroy he oversaw the subjugation of hundreds of thousands of slaves.

Correct, the statues weren't erected because they were traitors. They were erected to stick it to the blacks.

Lets just change all the school names to PS-1, PS-2, PS-3 etc and be done with it. Cheerleaders can wave their pompoms and yell "go pissers!!!"

My pretty conservative hometown had place names for the high schools. Looks like a good way to go tbh. The naming of things after people borders on fetish.

And btw I think the Austin government is not being strong enough in condemning the vandalism of the Lee and Davis street signs up here. The process to change them has already started. Quit being dicks.

Well, yeah -- we do vote on the names indirectly. Elected representatives and all.
Why are you so offended by simple name changes?
-
Re: Guess we need to change a lot of names around here...
All of statues being taken down are Confederates. Now we have the resident dimwit club trying to expand what is being taken down so as to change the narrative.
This of course is the same narrative being bandied around by alt-right media. Dimwit is as dimwit does.

Sam Houston rebelled against Mexico not the Union. Do try and keep up.
The issue is not that they were slavers the issue was they rebelled when it came time to end slavery.

You struggle to speak for yourself. You don't get to define your political opponents. If it was about only slavery then you would see people looking to do what you are claiming.
Instead the issue is the people that rebelled to preserve slavery. I get that nuance is tough for you but you're being pretty obtuse on this issue and showing a lack of independent thought.

You're going to have to provide some evidence it would cost billions. And if that's your only complaint, it's a decidedly weak one. Names change and maps and GPS devices are constantly updated regardless.

No it's not. They are confederates. The line is the one between confederate and not confederate.
Confederates are people that rebelled when slavery was coming to an end. The KKK and similar white supremacists erected statues celebrating them in the early twentieth century. Those are the ones being taken down.

Jeffersons place in history extends far beyond slavery. He penned the declaration of independence. Was big on religious freedom. Was our first secretary of state. Powerful advocate for states rights and co-founded the party to oppose federalists. He orchestrated the Louisiana purchase.
His impact on our history extends so far beyond slavery that it's entirely disingenuous to throw him into the discussion. Robert E Lee is primarily known as the general of the Confederacy who's primary purpose of existence was the preservation of slavery.

It would be pretty awesome to have a Sally Hemings presence somewhere in the Jefferson Memorial and some context explaining their relationship, such as it was, and the fact that Jefferson's blood flows through African Americans to this day.
40 foot statue of anonymous confederate but up by white women when blacks couldn't vote? That can go.

This is what I was getting at about you struggling with speaking for yourself. You really suck at speaking for others.
I have no issue with the Union side of the war. I do take issue with Johnny Reb though. They tore the country apart so they could keep their slaves and saw over 600k people die as a result of it. They deserve no honor whatsoever.
I do find it amusing that you struggle to support the works of 20th century white supremacists because you lack the capacity to think for yourself though. Those are the ones who erected the lion's share of those statues and monuments.
If you are so intent on history being preserved, you should look into the Jim Crow south and what precipitated the erection of those monuments you are so intent on keeping around.
-
Re: Guess we need to change a lot of names around here...
The seeds of the civil war were sown by the original country founders kicking the slavery issue down the road. The "add one slave state for every non slave state" bullshit perpetuated for the next 75 years just inflamed the issue.

All Lee did was lead the charge for the Rebels.
