Should the Spurs go after.....
Should the Spurs go after Tayshaun Prince? Prince is at his last year of his contract and the Pistons are trying to lock him up but the rumours is that Prince wants more than the Pistons have to offer. Maybe the Spurs can go after this guy by trading someone or maybe acquring him the free agency. What do you think? He does provide some offense and major defense. Discuss.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Or maybe we should go after Ben Wallace? He is also on the last year of his contract? If you had a choice to choose which player to sign, Ben or Prince?

Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
What? You wouldn't try to nab the "Defense Player of the Year"? You're crazy. :fro
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
prince's defense is vastly overrated, and I don't mean that he suck as defense, he is good, he is very good, but people are making him into a DPoY worthy defender. he is not. He has the potential to be one, but he is not one yet.
if detroit can't afford him, the Spurs can't afford him. i would still like to land DeMarr Johnson to replace Bowen.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Although I'm a Spurs fan, I would have to say a Prince acquisition would be good. He still has time to improve on his offense and defense is great (remember he is the one who shut down Kobe bryant in the NBA Finals '04). Last year writers all over the media were saying that Prince was most improved player of the year since his stats went up. If Prince is holding out on a contract because he wants more money, then he definately deserves it. Like I said before if we unload on some talent this summer, maybe we afford him.
Ben Wallace is someone we need as well. He is a great role player and a bruiser who we definately need. Who wouldn't want this guy on their team? Ok, maybe he is getting older but he can be someone we can use.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Ben will not leave the team...you can book that. Tayshaun more likely to leave.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
ok then explain how you are going to get him. I dont really have a problem with Big Ben playing for our team, just know that he'll command the max and we dont have that. Which means you would need trades with matching salaries all the while this is probably putting us further over the lux cap.
Oh and the kicker is Detroit has to want to do it as well. You'd probably be giving up TP if not Manu to do it.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
I would be happy to trade Tony Parker for either one. Tony may be quick but he is not consistent with his shots. If people are going to judge Tayshaun for being absent in the Finals, then Tony is guilty as well. This will be the judgement year for Tony. I'm pretty sure everyone is watching to see if he will improve his shooting or him complaining his knees ache especially since Pop warned him not to play at the France tournaments. Heck we can have Beno be the guy to replace him (He's cheaper anyway). Give Beno more minutes and he'll be much more consistent than Parker.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Detroit won't trade Tay or Ben for Parker. Joe D. will have better luck trading them to some Eastern Conference team for a big name player. He can probably land a big name player for bench scrubs...such as the Sheed deal.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Okay if Tayshaun or Ben does get traded, remember that both will be at the free agency in the summer which still goes back to the question: Should we go after them?

Ben won't be traded. He is not leaving.
-

If Ben is not leaving, then how come the Pistons haven't locked him up yet?

The point is this: even assuming that either guy would want to come to San Antonio, the Spurs don't have money to give to either one of them. In terms of a straight signing, the most the Spurs would have to offer is the mid-level exception, which is around $5 million per season. Both Tayshaun and Ben Wallace will command more than $5 million per season in a new contract. So, the Spurs can't sign them straight up.
That means you have to trade for them in a sign-and-trade deal. But if you're going to make that sort of a deal, you have to give up something the other team wants. Detroit has a PG, but would certainly be looking for a well-paid wing to replace Prince. So, basically, if you want to sign Tayshaun, you are pretty much only going to make that happen by trading Manu -- if I was Dumars, that's who I would demand. Thus, if you think Tayshaun Prince is worth giving up on Manu Ginobili, you have stumbled upon a great means for making that happen.
I'd think that would put you in the distinct minority -- here and most other places too.
While we're at it, why don't we target Shaquille O'Neal when he's a free agent?

They haven't discussed his contract yet...answer your question. They are currently dealing with Tayshaun.

If you're asking me, if I would trade Manu for Tayshaun Prince? I say Hell No! :blah
As for going for Shaq when he's a free agent, I say Hell no too. That guy is a prima donna.

Well I have heard that Joe Dumars would like to see Big Ben retire as a Piston. Yet I have doubts about it because he hasn't said anything about leaving or staying with the Pistons. Money has got to be factor.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
I am pretty sure we can offer him a shitload of money.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
:lol Ok, Money is not our advantage.
If Finley (especially since he had a chance to get paid more by other teams) and Nick Van Exel were convinced by Pop to join, maybe Big Ben would do. Championships do speak volumes!
:spin

Ben can win a Championship with Detroit, as he already has.

Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Yeah but the competition is less in the Western Conference. :blah
Eastern Conference is like a mine field over there. :hang
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
I could see that celtics offering PP
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
who'd a thought 2 years ago that the east would be a mine field, while for us the west is potentially an open road
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Paul Pierce? Would any Spurs Fans want him in our team?

Yeah think about it. Ever since Shaq left, he took all the competition with him. The Lakers aren't what they used to be, the rivalaries between the Spurs and Lakers aren't the same.
I don't see another Western Conference Team giving us trouble like the Lakers gave us the past few years.

Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
You think he would want the veterans mininum?
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
No, but the Spurs will have their MLE next summer.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
mb they would but argentina thinks the spurs should save the full mle for scola
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
I don't think that would happen. Think about it: Scola would have to buyout his contract, just to sign up for midlevel exception. Unless the buyout is cheap, Scola won't part ways from the Argentina team.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
dude the mle is more then what he is making now
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Cheap? Didn't we have trouble agreeing to a buyout for his contract this summer?
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
dude his buyout last summer was 15 million
spurs thought scola and his agent worked the buyout to like 3 million
but 15 million is WAY to much
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
just because his buyout is huge does not make him make more then the mle each year
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Other free agents for next summer include: Bobby Simmons, Nene, Peja Stojakovic, Vladimire Radmanovic, Al Harrington, Jason Terry, Caron Butler, James Posey, Bobby Jackson, Speedy Claxton, and Tim Thomas.

All Spurs fans hoping that's the case, ducks.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
he will never be a spur if he wants more then the mle the first year he is a spur
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
If he wanted more than the mle, then I guess we should consider trading the guy.
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
for the record I wanted him over malik rose but now I am not sure he will ever be a spur
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Malik Rose's fate was sealed once we signed him to that contract he had.

This is just a blasphemy, you guys just can't appreciate the worth of a young, up & coming PG like Tony. Beyond all of his flaws -which still can be corrected- he's still a starting PG with qualities, the kind of quality that can help a team winning championship. He's young, yet already a vet, and doesn't have attitude problem toward his teammates, & esp the coach.
Tayshaun is good, i'm not gonna deny that, but is he THAT GOOD ? With the scoring strength that this team posses right now, getting and/or molding a defensive SF isn't all that difficult, and much more cheaper than trying to get Prince -which will command the kinda salary that Tony's commanding right now- & speculating that Beno WILL BE GOOD ENOUGH as a starting PG for a championship team like us, while assuring if HE ACTUALLY DOES, than he's WILLING TO TAKE LESS THAN WHAT MARKET DICTATES FOR A PLAYER LIKE HIM.
Tony's salary + defensive specialist SF as Bruce replacement's salary < Tayshaun's salary + Beno's salary -if he's actually good enough to start
YOU GUYS MUST REMEMBER, POINT GUARD COMMANDS PREMIUM SALARY COMPARED TO SF, assuming that Tony's & Tayshaun's salary are equal, than paying a young, defensive minded SF is more economical than paying a starting PG like Beno.

In a perfect world the Spurs land Prince next summer without giving up anyone of note.

I'm not very knowledgeable about this, but I thought that the MLE was only available once every 2 years, or that if you used it, it was not available until the players receiving that money were not receiving it anymore. Can someone explain?
-
Re: Should the Spurs go after.....
Dont assume that Big Ben and Prince arent going to leave Detroit at the end of the season. Anything can happen. Saunders may not fit in or someone could get into a rift with him or something. This is the NBA today. Anything can happen. Does assume that Big Ben is sure to stay.

Ben will stay, and I am 99.9% sure. Tayshaun is a whole other matter.

The MLE is available every year. The LLE is available every other year you use it (i.e. it is not available the year right after you use it).
