I still fail to see how Urban Meyer is responsible for the actions of his assistant. Even if he knew about it, how is it any of his business what this dude does.
I get that Urban is a ass, and has had a win at all costs approach to athletics since he was at Utah, but it's one thing if your athletes are doing bad stuff, he is their mentor and role model, but his assistants?
The reason I'm asking this is because as far as I know, no charges were ever filed and this isn't like the Paterno thing where some dude was raping little kids, this was a adult man being abusive to an adult woman. At any time should could have got legal help.
I'm not asking this because I'm siding with anyone, but it brings me back to the situation of the two Longhorns who were accused of rape, and after legal due process were found not guilty. If Urban wanted to, could he have done anything, without causing a legal issue or escalating the problem for this woman?
This is a witch hunt, and I just don't see how Urban is to blame for this particular problem.
He is NOT responsible for the actions, he is responsible for REPORTING IT TO HIS SUPERIORS.
Did he report this to his AD when he ( allegedly found out about the 2015 incident ) to his superiors? Answer NO
Not only that he LIED about it in front of the Big x media. They specifically asked him.
This is an OSU call. It’s in his contract with OSU. He apparently knew his assistant had allegedly assualted his wife in 2015. If you Know this at UT, and don’t report it to Greg F... grounds for termination. This is why the AD and admin exist... “Urban, go back to coaching, we will take it from here. It’s not your problem anymore.” Also... Why was the assistant FIRED? Why? Because it happened AGAIN.
And they know this shit after the Baylor ordeal, the staff HAS TO BE GIVEN VERY SPECIFIC instructions on how to handle this so they can do what they do best, coach.
And it’s a frkn assistant COACH beating up his wife! Not a kid...
My amateur opinion is Urban and his team know he's done, so they're attempting to accomplish two things:
a.) muddy the waters as much as possible with lies and diversions hoping he won't be fired with cause, so the contract buyout will remain significant (see the $15 mil Briles received)
b.) get out of this smelling as best you can so you position yourself favorably for the next job, there could be openings in December such as LSU and Notre Dame
I don't necessarily believe either are going to work, but that's how I feel they're approaching it.
Maybe, maybe there's a small outside chance the AD falls on the sword, but the ultimate problem is Urban has lied multiple times already for no reason other than he's simply an arrogant prick.
I think you have nailed it.
Meyer now claims he did know about 2015 and reported it.
Liar. Yet they put a guy who followed the rules on administrative leave?
Jesus....
Only 5 days after the lie with no clarification on who he reported it to.
Sounds like OSU coaches and AD are attempting to cover for each other.
And are making a total mess of it.
But hell I thought Briles was gone early on...
Meyer has to be gone. They fd this up so badly. It’s gotta be compensation discussions now.
I just don’t get it.
At what point is a manager liable for his employees actions? I’m not condoning anyone’s actions, but there are a lot of other people closer to the situation who did nothing about this.
If a man did something like that to one of my daughters, I’m not telling her to change her actions, I’m going to the police and then I’m going to whip his ass.
If this was going on all the way back to 2015 then Tom Herman probably knew about it, then he is equally to blame. Do you see where I’m going with this.
In my mind there is one guilty party in this, the asshole coach, if we are to start the blame game, then I’m pointing my finger at parents and a lot of people that also knew and did nothing.
Abuse. How does it work? If Tom Herman knew and did nothing about it, then fuck him too and goodbye. This isn’t hard.
This is not how it works now.
If you coach kids and you find out an assistant who interacts with those kids beats up his wife, you had better report it to admin. This protects the coach from the “What am I suppose to do with Jerry S blame game” . Let the coach, coach, not be Solomon and have to make some difficult legal decision. Admin then has protocol for how to approach the law without getting your ass sued off because of false accusations. There is a reason the wives were all discussing does Urban know.
If this woman is truly being assaulted and the police know but no one does anything do we wait for her to be crippled? The police, then the law, legally determines what level of security is required. They must be informed. Even if the person getting beat up does not necessarily want to inform the police, “this time” The police and the law can then put together some sort of timeline for the person being assaulted.
So you get yourself thrown in jail after going to the police... How is that gonna help your daughter? That helps you think you solved things. You need to be with your daughter. Imo...
As far as assistant coaches, they inform the head coach I’m guessing. Btw, Herman was of course gone from OSU by 2015.
The schools have well defined protocol now. The parties involved know their legal responsibilities. And if they don’t, the AD should be fired. I worked as a TA at UT and we were instructed on protocol on profs interaction with students (office hours) concerning this, especially if we officed with the profs. And if it was found out we knew of incidents and did not report to the head of the dept, we could be held legally liable, so we were told as employees of UT.
And yep, I got a story. I not only told the dept head, I told any females who approached me on seeing the prof to bring a friend, preferably male, during office hours. The power of THE GRADE is used in evil ways, so can the power of the salary via marriage. Later I found out this prof was already under investigation. I’m coming from a sensitive spot. Thus my disgust with this type of thing.
As far as a company you work for.... They should have protocol probably involving sessions with HR. Take up all “what if’s” with HR I would think.
Back to recruiting.
1. Being around kids is the one thing I totally get, a guy that does this as no business being in a position of influence around kids.
2. The mindset of a person that abuses a woman is dominance, they want to dominate that person, they are bullies, and I hate bullies. For a bully it's not enough to beat you they have to take away your dignity. Oh I have no problem getting into it with such a person, I haven't met a bully yet that likes being in a real fight, it sends a strong message to that person of what will happen if he ever crosses that line again. To me it's worth whatever happens after that. Even if I get my ass kicked, he will know if it happens again I will come after him again.
3. I have a more personal story, I grew up with a father who had PTSD and he was also abusive, I had to stand up to him, and this is why I feel the way I do. I was the victim, until I decided to stop being the victim.
With all that said, I Still just don't know how a boss can be fired for the actions of an employee, especially if he was not a witness to the crime.
Because it’s in his contract. And he knows the protocol. He knows his role, he has to or he should not be a head coach.
Its really that simple. As far as how far down the line and hearsay... there is HR and attorneys for that. There can be some very muddy situations. Urban’s is not. Like Tfloss said, he is getting advice on muddying the waters because he has had to now admit he lied. We also know now that Meyer and the coach says he was counseled by Meyer. Further demonstrationing that he knew the rules and even tried to correct the behavior which he is actually not trained to do. It’s more than saying stop or you are out. This guy had a real habitual problem based on his wife’s and his accounts.
You could take on an abusive person because you had the physical capability of doing so. This lady did take on her husband verbally, but she was not gonna win a physical battle. My brother and I had to stop my dad from wailing on our sister after she wrote a dirty note about a teacher in school and was caught. There are those moments where physical strength is immediately needed. Then talking it out might work. My dad still thanks us. Especially me as the eldest. He had a bad temper about “sullying the family name”
Im really glad Anderson went directly with the 1s instead of waiting. He said he had studied the playbook. No standing around. Can’t wait for him to take on zHager in pads, should be epic.
Yeah to heck with reason lets hang Meyer. Maybe we will get some transfers AKA Baylor.
In this case reason comes from the law and his contract.
You don’t like it, change the law, or don’t sign the contract.
Hang him.... Poor man. He might walk away to a new job taking with him millions of dollars. Or he might stay and make millions of dollars. In any case, OSU has the ball. Poor innocent Urban. It’s almost liked he has never lied before.
Meyer states at Big X days yes he knew about it and reported to the appropriate OSU officials.
Done.
Over.
OSU might investigate the handling further up, but one of the best coaches in college football is at home where he should be.
He still has his rep from Florida, but it’s done.
